MSN Virus!
Man,

MSN is currently under a havy attack.
There's a worm (worm_faterb.A or something) around wich will infect your pc making that the virus will be sended forward to all your online people.

I've just been 1,5 houres disinfecting my brothers laptop, because he had the virus too, and it's a damn irritating one.
It will block your'e tasklist, and disallow you to run online virusscanners.

If you don't know about the virus, don't accept the following .pif's:

-Mona lisa wants her smile back
- My new photo!
- Bush Fat
- Jenifer Lopez

MAN, this is damn serious I guess, couple of hundred, thousend people infected already. Do you guys have it all over the world?

A .pif file can contain anything. It is rather foolish to open links that look dodgy anyway.

i had the bropia worm a little while ago, this comes in the same way...

Actually, .PIFs are MS-DOS shourcut (at least, they're supposed to be that), but you can't really know for sure these days...

* sigh *
The old times, when we used Windows 3.1 or 3.11, and .PIF was .PIF, you were 100% sure it was a MS-DOS shortcut. But now...

Like I said, they can contain anything. If you get a dodgy looking link on MSN from ANYONE, don't open. Pretty much common sense there....

The problem with .pif files is that they can in fact contain or be an executable (.exe) file, which would make a virus maker be able to do practically anything with your computer.

Windows by default hides known file extensions, so you can't tell a .pif or .jpg apart other than the file icon, and even that is not consistent. This makes it very easy for users to just double click a file and load a virus without any suspicion.

Well, they'd trowen MSN offline for a couple of houres here yesterday, so maybe that was the time they needed to fix it?

This is 1 reason why, if you have XP, you should set Windows NOT to hide known file extensions.

yesterday i got a weird pif link too, from someone I hadn't talked to for ages... i asked him before clicking, he told me what it was before i click it... we talked for a while then, it was cool

anyway, msn is still down for me, is it also your cases?

well at least in 95 + 98 i believe it didnt hide the extensions... i may be wrong though, but i always saw them. also, the point is that xp does it automatically, so most people wont bother to reveal them
