what did you know about lba the first time you played it?

i'm just wondering, because looking at a picture of the dino-fly, i realised i had no idea what was gonna happen next in lba when i played it first. (although i guess from the box-art, i must have known about the dino-fly in some fashion, but still)

and is that maybe part of lba's wonder? that so many new things opened up? that just when it seemed like you'd exhausted the game's inventiveness, up popped something mind-blowingly huge (like the dino-fly)

or was it just that i was lucky that i was so totally ignorant of everything? so, what did anybody else know before they experienced it? am i alone in my innocence?

I did not know the first thing... Had quite some time spent with running the setup over and over again. Because I did'nt had a clue what configuration I should use. Often it just did the intro and than crashed. Happiness when I found myself (Twinsen) in a cell and having the sounds work, and everything.

absolutely naff all. it was a completely chance buy from EA's budget range. 10 quid back in 1995/6 and one of the best games ever... of course after that I had a very detailed and anticipating knowledge of lba 2

This thread reminds me of the fairly recent How did you start playing LBA?-thread. In there, you can find my response, as well as plenty of others.

Surely, there are several more of these threads out there. It's just a matter of finding them. This does not mean that any new person to the community/person who's yet to describe his first experience with LBA can post in this thread.

By the heavens, post, damnit, post!

Post like there's no tomorrow!

POST!

Just like you skinny_guy, I guessed a few things from the box arts, (which imo was something good, because I was wondering when i would see each element in the game and was always very surprised discovering it waspretty diferent and much more cool than what I imagined, like the racing track, the franco island...), but didn't know any thing else, and I believe this is a chance.

The review I read (the one I pointed out in the thread homeless posted) didn't give much away (like a review should). So I didn't know much about the whole adventure, that ofcourse made things much more interesting. You never knew what you would encounter in the next scene.

I have the EB Classics LBA1 box, so I didn't even get to see the original box art in full.

But, I always remember the excitment of not understanding something new, and this goes for pretty much everything in life.

I knew from my friend that it was a game where you have to go to the pharmacy and find a cure for who knows what

I knew from my friend that two elephants come to your house and pretend to be searching for you. And also that you need to find something called "CX"

Well, when I finally got LBA 1 running earlier this year I still remembered things when I watched my mother playing ages ago (~ 2000). Of course she didn't.
I knew about getting caught when trying to exit the citadel, about some of the islands' names, Joe and Raymond, destroying the fortress, rescueing some people at another fortress and Baldino's semi-destroyed house. And I knew about white groboclones and alarm switches. And about you have to pass the Temple of Bu. And the Citadel Island ferry plus the test with the boxes before. And about Zoe (not about the clone though).
AND the construction site, of course.
Did I forget something?

The point is, many places of the game I already had an idea of, but not of the story. But playing LBA 1 for the first time was a great experience.

Before playing LBA2 all I knew was that it was really good, and the point of the game was to cure a dino-fly.

Before playing LBA1 I knew that the graphics weren't as good as LBA2 (although on playing it I didn't actually notice any difference at first).

I had my first copy of LBA2 off a Twilight CD. The CD wasn't working that well though as it didn't have any FMV's. On top of that, the game crashed because it couldn't find them.
So I thought Twinsen and Zoe were divorced, and Twinsen was going to "take her back" after he beat the Tralu (as that was the last line of text I had before triggering the first FMV of Zoe&Twinsen in the rain)

man, those were the days

When started playing LBA 2 ofcource I already knew LBA(1)
(I was verry happy when I found out you couldn't walk into walls that nasty. ) The only thing I knew that there was someting about aliens and that no longer pure isometric perspective was being used. May also be someone told me Dinofly was ill, that's about it.

I remember that when we bought our first pc (486dx) the guy said buy this game its going to be big.

Normally my dad wouldnt buy something when pushed into it but he looked at the box and said.. Alright

Im so glad he made that decision. We spent months all sitting round the pc together (the whole family) taking it in turns to play.

Ahh those were the days! When families used to play pc games together!
