Games now: Where's the good stuff?

[rant]
I miss the days of Fahrenheit, The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts...
And I could go on, I thin.. hope.

Checking out all the game reviews sites, everything is crap. Not 99%, not 99.9%, but EVERYTHING.

How can that be?

Where's the good (new) stuff? I'm so confused.
Ankh was a nice game, but just niceness, nothing more.

Are there any budget-y new adventures? You know, games that have a *story*?

Anything?

Well graphics is the thing that matters, nowadays. And playstation3 and xbox360 have to be 'cool', so that's race/sport/shooter only.
Nintendo still makes some adventures, like Zelda. But I never played zelda.

Did you ever try Keepsake? It's comparable to Longest Journey (qua graphics) and it has a nice storyline.

I didn't try Keepsake, but it's made by "The Adventure Company", which is a factory of crappy adventure games

Are you sure it's a good game?

I'm positive. It's a great game. It does have some obvious and basic things, like this dog sidekick which is actually a human, etc.
Matrix <> 13th floor
Longest Journey <> keepsake
But that's my opinion. Check it out.

story was never a great selling point and not a lot of people actually care.

just look at the number of people that claim Half Life 2 has a great story.

there are a few older games that have a great story, not adventures per se, but I liked them a lot and they belong in my top list, but you probably played them too:
* Anachronox; it's an eastern style RPG
* Tron 2.0; and FPS in interesting environment, but with actually an evolving background story

Or maybe a recently released game for the PC:
* Jade Empire; it's pretty much KOTOR with an eastern flavor, it's actually a bad game... but a well...

I was a game freak in the old times, but now I only follow quite a few games. One of them is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It made me quite addicted since I love it since it has a unique player freedom and a special fantasy environment.

Oblivion was a major let down to me, I was a fan of TES even since Daggerfall, and ever since that it went down hill with less and less freedom and size.
Oblivion was partially ruined by the fact that they dumbed it down for a console game.

Your screwed if you havnt got a console

Well, not really, but still, pc isnt the mainsteam aventure platform it was.

Aside from the Sam & Max eppisodes, which are ok, I havnt played a pc adventure in awhile. I won a copy of Tungunska: The Secret Files awhile back, and it looks ok, but i havnt had time to try it yet.

Nice storys are very rare whatever the genra.
The only really ones I have come accross recently were Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and PoP:The Two Thrones.
Before that the gamecube game "Eternal Darkness" had a fantasicly told story, but hardly anyone got that.
umm..
no, there really isnt much games with truely great storys.

Eternal Darkness is great - plus you can get a gamecube and ED for less than 30 quid I reckon

Yeah, second hand cubes should be dirt cheap now.
Eternal Darkness + Zelda Combo disk + Wind Waker would be a good buy for adventure fans. (chuck in the PoP games and BG&E if you havnt got them on pc).
Of course, a Wii would also get you Twlight Princess as well as all the cube games, but a lot more expensive and they are still near impossible to find anyway.

as a tip : play Syberia

now the thing is consoles rule the market and as long idiots buy racing games and shoot'em up with high graphic detail, that's what the producers are gonna make ... they don't care about us ... Fred doesn't care about us drawling for LBA3 either ... he makes what assures him wellfare, money ... I mean look at us ... a bunch of crazy LBA fans ... if LBA3 would come out and we would ALL buy it, that would make what ? ... 2823 sold copies .... that AIN'T WORTH IT

Theres a heck of a lot of fans not on this forum.
Circumstancial evidence, but YouTube and GoogleVideo view numbers for videos with LBA content imply theres a lot of silient fans out there.

I think with the existing LBA fanbase, assuming a game is sold for £35, then theres probably enough to justfy about £1m investiment. With minimal distribution costs this might just about be possible, but its not a safe bet by any means.
These days £500,000 investment with online distrubution could make an LBA2 like game of reasonable quality, imo. But the market still isnt mature enough for that.

Fair point, allthough stock levels are low, plus the Wii lets you play *all* the console zelda's if your willing to spend a few £$ on the VC system

CF you'll find some lovely games beyond the PC.
And you mentioned games that are limited to adventure and platformer, those specific two are dying genres but there are still other great genres out there.

Hey did anyone play Runescape? That's a good game.

BUT SERIOUSLY. The only new game I've bought recently is "Children of Mana" for DS. It's okay, Zelda-like controls, fantasy storyline, fun for a while to get the new weapons, but it gets boring.

My brother got the new Zelda for Wii but I didn't really play it much. I got to the fishing part in the training village then kinda lost interest. I'll give it a run over sometime.

But otherwise, I really haven't seen anything interesting come out lately either, which is pretty dissapointing. I put it down mostly to me losing interest, but I still play LBA, and even Monkey Island. So maybe...

Trust me, I got stuck on the fishing bit too.
Wait for the line to go tight THEN pull up, don't wait for an onscreen message.
Somehow the game just made me think I had to wait for a message.

The game just rocks after that bit
(that fishing bit is only like 0.01% of the game...not an exaggeration )
===

Runescape was pretty good for a MMORPG.
I used to play as a member a few years back, my account still works as a free account, but I dont play thesedays.
Still, I think its wonderfull such a small team is doing so well.
