You won't believe this!

OK, some of you will probably have done this before, but for those who haven't, here:
http://viscog.beckman.uiuc.edu/grafs/demos/15.html

Instructions:

Count how many times the team in white manages to pass the ball. Write your answer down.
Then rewind the video and just watch it normally, not trying to count anything. You won't believe your brain!

I've seen this before, and it worked on me. It was quite amazing. Obviously I noticed this time as I knew what was coming.

I didn't see it the first time, but the whole video seemed really laggy, is it meant to be like that?

I didn't see him. But what's the bottom line here? Obviously if we are told to concentrate on something, we most likely won't notice something else...

It's the idea of change blindness.
A more convincing one was done on some students at a university, where a stranger would stop and ask them for directions. Then, some workmen would pass by with a door. After they'd passed, most students failed to realise that the stranger had changed - someone of a different height, build and even voice replaced them whilst the workmen were walking past.

That seems like one of those theories that are trying to prove something we already know. Not that there's anything wrong with those, but they just aren't that exciting.

I remember reading in the news once: "scientists discover dogs have feelings!"
No shit

Well, I was quite surprised not to notice the gorilla, but yeah.
NewScientist was doing a section on how the mind works and how you can fool it which I found absolutely fascinating!
For example, you can be given memories that aren't your own.

Yeah, that's cool. I learned it not too long ago myself.

You actually experience things that other people experienced. When you interact with other people you usually feel what they feel. When I don't feel any empathy for someone it actually scares me.

Also, memories are not a record, they're dynamic. (see "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind")

Darran Brown uses a lot of this stuff in his work, its quite interesting and scary.

Teachs you not to trust your own oberservations, or even your own "randomness".

I've fallen for this. Nice one!

I was so worried on getting the count right. I thought it'd be like those tests were you have to find how many F's exist in a paragraph of text, where the challenge is that the brain automatically ignores F's in words like " of " etc. - so I was entirely focusing on counting correctly...

This thread is over 5 years old... you're not helping my perception of you as a stalker.

I was just curious as to what kind of threads you make and stumbled upon this which was genuinely interesting.

No matter how old this is, many people haven't seen it, so... no big deal.

Stalkers are great, they imply that you're interesting.

And aye I did notice the man in the gorilla costume, but simply ignored it because I wasn't told to see it. At least that's how I already knew my brain works.
