Open Source RMP
Hello everyone
It's been a long time I haven't been around there. I'm currently working as a R&D programmer in a french 3D studio, Teamto, and I still dont have any time for me. Considerting what I've seen so far, and the time it takes to make the short clips we have here http://www.teamto.com/gallery_en.html, I don't think anymore a film, even rather short, can be made without a big team of animators and modellers. It tooks 7 years to one very good animator to do the 7mn clip "the passenger", and 1 year to 6 persons to make "elephants dreams", so see.... Anyway, I've learned a lot while modelling and coding php for the RMP, and now I'd like all that material to be as useful as possible, so I propose we release all the stuff in the RMP depot to the public domain. It wont prevent people from continuing the rmp, since those models are still far from being textured or rigged so giving them away in that state wont 'spoil' the movie, but it might at least allow some peopel to gain time in their mod or game development. Personaly I will release my models in any way, and I'd love evryone of you to give freely his own models as well, but if some of you have something against this just let me know B-)

Absolutely fine, I have always said any resources of the RMP (maps, models, whatever) should and are avaiable to anyone to use from any projects
![]() However, I ask that the script/anything story related remains closed. I know there isnt much, but I do still plan to make this movie...probably single handedly seeing as most of the main people dont seem to have time. (Atresica and Lightwing...script AWOL for 2 years ![]() The one problem we have with open-sourceing stuff is, technicaly, dont we have to ask permision from every model creator? Anything I have done I'm happy too have open, but we dont really have the rights to say this about others models?

I'll help you Darkflame.
My friend is teaching me a few things in modelling, so I'm more than happy to help.

Well I'll send a team mail to ask if anyone is bothered by outsourcing all that, but the thing is that many emails are invalid now...
I personaly don't think it's worth getting each one's personal permission, RMP is basically non commercial so people knew very well that giving their model was a kind of "donation", furthermore none of those models could be sold so I dont know what harm could come from gaving them away... But well, team emails and scripts will remain hidden of course. B-) Concerning video clips, is this worth letting them hidden ? Those are mainly little tests so giving them away too would be fine imo. Concerning the site : I'm willing to giving its keys to anyone that wants it, so please all let me know, I cant code anymore for this one, I have just bought a big web pack and my new sites ask for a lot of time...

Yes, send an opt-out email and give people a week or so to respond.
The test video clips, fine... If theres any of the intro-previews there though, no. (I cant remember if any was uploaded). Quote:
Also, I find even when I do have free time, if I have been doing X all day for work, I dont feel like doing X afterwards for personal projects ![]() Thats why I'm hoping my new job (which is flash work, not 3d), will make me feel more like doing 3d work after ![]() But you really wont be able to just activate logins? If so, then I guess PM me the needed details so I can activate accounts (like Sebz probably wants one).

FWIW, the Prequel is looking for some models/modelers. We might be able to use some of the models. Anybody with Maya is more than welcome to help us out there!

The big matter is actually musics, we have tons of original tunes that might be used out of LBAish actually, so I'll try to contact the composers individually before releasing anything.
If some things can be released, an others cant, it would ask for quite a bunch of code to add a partial access system in categories, and I'm not willing to do that. So I'm rather thinking now about a clone of the depot, located in my new domain, in which I'd simply remove all the login stuff and all the "registered" creations, to have a simple open access database. It wouldnt autoimatically get the new RMP creations, but well...that's not important, as long as thsoe 7 years of work are available. I'm not looking forward to keeping the administration of the current site, it makes some more URLs and passwords to access, I already have so much to care about...I'lll send you the keys and the procedure to activate an account, DF, and that way if a new webmaster arises he'll have to ability to modify whatever he wants in teh site (since my clone will ensure most of the models are available to the public).

A clones the simplest solution, but wont a new domain be risky?
There is a lot of work, and it would be nice to have it "permanently" available?

Permanently ?
What do you mean ? If I simply copy the current site to one of my sudomains, like lbarmp.prolifik.info, creations will be all the time accessible I guess. Maybe you dislike the fact that the 2 depots wont be "synchronized"...well considered the production rate, I think it'd be possible for me to copy the new productions of the RMP site to my depot from times to times... All the thing is that I want to get rid of all the login/assessment stuff, and ensure that we wont lose access to the current data even if someone indulges in remaking the site from scratch or something like that. Make an open backup in some way. I'm going to think a bit about the possibilities for this "open source" site....

I don't mind not synchronised as such...I was simply making sure you were sure the new site would stay up, not merely a temporary thing.
It wont be nice to have an open site anyone can submit too, then simply have the minority non-open stuff (script ect) kept as is.

Open source is definitely better. You can release all my old models and stuff as open-source. Good luck.

Well no problem, I currently have a 2 Go account, and in the future it will only expand. After that, I'm not sure plexiweb is a very reliable host (so cheap), but the site should be online at least 99% of the time I hope. It wont be nice to have an open site anyone can submit too, then simply have the minority non-open stuff (script ect) kept as is. Well I dont see what you mean here...if I dont rewrite some code, upload wont be possible in the open site, since the current system requires the intervention of the webmaster and is quite long.........so basically this would be a "still" depot, not an open source depot gathering the new creations of fans (that's rather the role of the magicball site). Surely it would be nice to create a new dynamic thanks to this open source concept, and make the script and other aspects benefit from it, but it requires time and coding, so the best would be to find a new webmaster. My goal at the moment is to give value to current creations, not expand B-) Thehen -> thanks man ![]()

Not bothered about distribution of models, not like I was keeping them for my own animations anyway. As long as everybody's work is credited where it's available for download I don't see a problem. And it's such a small community I can't see anyone trying to pass other's work off as their own.
P.S these Twinsen smilies are really tacky ![]() |

Good to hear from you again. Hows things?
Yeah, crediting is always an absolute must. ps. Once your eyes adjust , the smilies are quite nice imo. Gmail/GoogleChat has the best smilies, however.

Most of the MP3s arent tagged actually...but in their name there is the name of the creator, isnt that enough ? Or is someone ready to tag them to help ?
Many people havent replied, that's normal, but the problem is I dont have the answers of all the music composers, that's embarrassing.....

Cool !
Have a look in the RMP depot http://el-muerte.student.utwente.nl/~rmp/ Except ET's musics (which are all tagged visibly), they all have to be tagged... I send you your login infos so that you can access the mp3s if you've lost them.

This might be a stupid question, but what codec are the videos in? :S I can't seem to get any of them to run.
But wow, looks like a ton of work has gone into this project. |

![]() I think most videos are either divx or Indeo5. (annoyingly that last codec used to be free/easier to find).
