World Cup 2006

Hello, another world cup thread. We had some nice and infected debate last time around. Tomorrow it is time for some nice action again in the World Cup 2006 qualification. How is the situation and feeling in your countries with the World Cup coming up? What will happen on saturday?

There are some matches with special interest.
For example Romania faces Holland at home with a 90s squad. Both teams have the same amount of points on top of Group 1, but Holland has played one game less. Romania therefor forced to win if they wanna win the group. In the same group, the Czech Republic plays Finland. The Fins are probably out of the race with a loss, and will probably go for a draw in order to reach the second place. The Czechs shouldnt be as good as they were in the Euro 2004 with the lack of Nedved and Baros's weak form.

Israel plays Ireland at home in group 4, where France has been disappointing as favourite this far. A very important game, and it will be interesting to see if Israel (Could some Israeli tell me about your team, I have no idea who those guys are) is good enough to beat the quite impressive Irish team. If they do, they are in the run for a place in Germany 2006. Switzerland plays France in the same group. France is quite forced to win to avoid disaster. They have btw not performed a succesful World Cup qualification campaign since 1986(!). They missed the World Cups 1990 and 1994, and they were automatically qualified 1998 and 2002.

In Sofia, Sweden plays Bulgaria. The Bulgarians hate us after we've crushed them 5-0 in the Euro 2004 and 4-0 in the World Cup 1994 bronze match. Inbetween we beat them twice in the Euro 2000 qualification. That means that they will be on fire. It is however questionable if that is enough since they lack three of their four best players, Bojinov (11 goals in Serie A before he was injured), M Petrov and S Petrov. We lack Henrik Larsson, who was knee-injured in the Real Madrid-Barcelona derby in october.

There are also some interesting games in other places. USA and Mexico face each other in Mexico City. This is the first match in the final North American Qualification group where the top three reach the World Cup.

Uruguay plays Brazil at home and those two really hate each other. Also, Cameroon must win against Sudan on sunday if they wanna reach teh World Cup.

Nice idea to start a thread

Well, the preparations for the match against Ireland tomorrow are huge, the whole country talks about this match. For the the first time in I don't know how many years we actually have a chance this campaign, considering our earlier results.
However, I fear that we are going to get beaten by them . Ireland is by far better, and without Berkovic (even though he hasn't really played in the past year or so), it would be much harder.
Benayoun is obviously the key player; he has been the best in the previous matches, and has scored the most goals.

From the description you make and the fact that it is Ireland that you face I think that you will get a draw. What club does Benayoun play for?

Nice one Gustav, Any chance you can tidy those tables up a bit?

England will win, obviously. (I doubt it, but am hopeful.)

Medur>> I see, Im not really into south american football rivalries, but isnt Uruguay's victory on maracana in the 1950 world cup the worst defeat in Brazilian soccer history? Also, Uruguay are known for being one of the worst home teams you can face. But Brazil doesnt really need to win this match, you are well on your way to Germany already. Also you have Peru on sunday first, which youll probably win.

Pandy>> It takes an awful time But all the standings are nicely lined up here http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/....html?zone=eur

Yes, it was a pretty ugly defeat, but it was 55 years ago, and nobody gives a shit about it anymore. I think it has been already stablished that we're superiour in football. The only real rivalry we have is against Argentina.

Man, what a match!!
Ireland scored in the 3rd minute already, but Israel was obviously better throughout the entire match. Eventuially, at the 91st minute, Abas Swan scored the equalizing goal.

This is one of my happiest soccer moments ever.

Well, I didn't watch the England/Northern Ireland match (I only watch football when it's actually the proper World Cup) but I heard some of it from another room.

4-0 is rather a good score. 3-1 would have been better for me as I am three-quarters English, quarter Northern-Irish.

morshem, nice! How did you cope with Roy Keane?

We slaughtered Bulgaria & Stoichkov (now coach) as usual (WC qual. -94: 1-1, 1-0, WC bronze match 04: 4-0, Euro 2000 qual. 1-0, 1-0, Euro 2004: 5-0). 3-0 it ended, after Ljungberg scored twice and Edman scored his first international goal on a classy free kick. We started off with a really defensive lineup, but since we scored after 10 minutes their offence was killed off a bit. Still, we need to beat Croatia away if we wanna win the group, so it will be a hard road to Germany. Thankfully, we don't have any special game before Henrik Larsson returns (next season), the only game we have before september is Malta at home.

Hmm, we managed to get a draw with Ireland?
Nice.

It disappointed me thought the Israeli played said (before the game) that they would be content with only a draw.

Well, it's partly true; because now we have to gain at least 1 win against the 3 big teams - Freance, Ireland and Switzerland. And the matches versus the last two mentioned are away matches, so it would be much harder.

France - Israel: 1:1.

Once again, we were behind when Trezeguet scored at the 50th minute. But 5 minutes after, he was sent off with an ugly foul. Since this minute, Israel was obviously much better, and eventually, at the 82nd minute, Wallid Badir has scored the equalizing goal. We still have a great chance to finish at least at second place.

YES!!!!!
yay! Congratulations morshem and others! You silenced the fucking French once again! It would be really nice if you can make it all the way to Germany!

Btw, Wallid Badir was the first to score at the French in a competetive match since Angelos Charisteas in the Euro 2004 quarterfinal

Today, Croatia ran over Malta, meaning that we are now only second in our group.

Cameroon beat Sudan with a 90th minute goal, meaning that they still have a chance of getting to Germany! Which is good.

And sadly Denmark lost in Ukraina today, meaning that they will most likely miss the World Cup.

Ireland-Israel 2:2

As usual, we were behind by 2 goals, but somehow, out of nowhere, we managed to equalize just before half time. Then we spent the entire second half defending our goal, including 7 minutes of stoppage time. The result: another heroic match of our team, and we are still unbeaten.
Someone's gonna get a heart attack from those matches

there's Brasil x Paraguay tomorrow here in my city, I won't go there though, it's WAY too expensive. you can always watch it on TV

today Argentina lost to Equator by 2:0, and Colombia beat Peru by 5:0 now the standings are:

Argentina 14G 8W 4D 2L 28pts
Brasil 13G 6W 6D 1L 24pts
Equator 14G 7W 2D 5L 23pts
Paraguay 13G 5W 4D 4L 19pts
Colombia 14G 4W 5D 5L 17pts
Uruguay 13G 4W 4D 5L 16pts
Venezuela 13G 4W 2D 7L 14pts
Peru 14G 3W 5D 6L 14pts
Chile 13G 3W 5D 5L 14pts
Bolivia 13G 4W 1D 8L 13pts

The top four ones qualify automatically, fifth place play against the Oceania champion, Australia, of course.
It's the best Venezuela campagin in history, and Colombia is quite near the qualification against Australia.

And sorry Medur, but Brasil and Uruguay are rivals, just watch the game and you will see how tough it is. of course, not as Argentina, but it's the second one, everyone else just wanna beat the best team.

Tomorrow we play against Paraguay, if we win we take the lead. Then wednesday we play agains Argentina, in Buenos Aires. If we manage to get a draw or even win we keep the lead and are almost qualified.

Israel plays against Switzerland today, in an extremely important match.... Personally I feel that we are about to lose, but our previous matches in this tournament taught me otherwise.

Yes, your team has been incredibly good at coming back towards the end. This time you will have to hope for a surprise again, because I am quite confident that Switzerland will win this match. Israel has a squad with mainly players from Maccabi Haifa (who lost against the mediocre Malmö in the CL qualification), and that shouldn't be enough versus a Swiss side that is said to have been very good in the friendly vs Norway a few weeks ago. But your team shows great morale, and therefor it is not unlikely that you fix another draw here.

There is also an interesting match between two of Europe's best sides in Istanbul tonight, Turkey faces Denmark. The loser will miss the World Cup and I hope that it wont be Denmark.

I think we lost to Denmark recently in a friendly... I don't really follow these kinds of things. I seem to remember beating them 3-0 in the last World Cup though.

You were absoluteley demolished by Denmark, I watched that game. But who should care? It was just friendly, cant see why people are so upset.. Another thing today though: If you dont beat Wales things dont look very good for Sven...
