Question

V2 and I had an arguement over ICQ
it seems that we have different opinions about what are Quests, Adventure games and RPG's
so here are our opinions: (quoted from ICQ)

Ghost: "QUEST is a game in which you cannot die (well broken sword you can die 1 or 2 times but that doesnt count) in which there are NO FIGHTINGS and only things you need to do like Broken Sword, Monkey island and Discworld!
RPG is like Ultima 9 and 8 etc.
LBA is Adventure game!
Adventure = like a mix of RPG and QUEST - puzzels with fighting!"

well that's my quote but I think LBA is also half action game

V2: "you dumbass, you're talking nonsense again

lba is a mixture of an adv (many puzzles), action (you nove this guy with arrows) and rpg (inventory, increasing gradually levels)

adv.'s is mi, bs, discworld, gabriel knight
it doesn't matter if u get killed"

Ghost: "so what do you think is quests?

and I agree with your definition about LBA ..
but that's the only thing you're right aboutz"

V2: quests? there's not such genre of games.

just post a new thread on the mb explaining my and yours definitions and examples and see who's right

that's it

But im sure there is a genre called quests..

and you el, you've played thousands of games, esp. adv.'s so tell us who's right.

I don't think there is..

Following genres are known..
Action
3rd person/1st person
Strategy
RTS/Turn-based and those new 3D-ones and also "sim"-games
Fly
War/Civilian/Arcade/Space
Motor
Arcade/Simulation
RPG
Adventure
This is where the "quest" genre should be??
Sports

Then there's puzzle (like Tetris), but that's Strategy..

There is no such gnre as "Quests". There is Adventure and Role-Playing.

I am used to Ghost talking out of his derriere.

Going off-topic-topic, has anyone played Undying yet? I might get it and I want your opinion.

Derrierre? I think it's french for behind.

There is indeed no genre like quest.
A Quest is a part of a genre (I think RPG)

A quest is a sub-class of an adventure, just like Action-Adventure.
LBA is a Action-Adventure
Discworld or Monkey Island are Quests

In Quests you can't die, and you don't have real time combat (or even turn based combat).

Check this article for a other view of perspective:

And talk about that article here:

So there arent games which are just "Adventure" right?

they're sub adventure

(and what about Borken Sword 1? you can die only 4 times in there, 3 of them are in real time, but you dont fight - eg: you're on a train and somebody is about to shoot you, so you need to push the "Stop" button before he shoots.. But it's still Quest right?)

Well there are games that don't realy belong in any of the sub genres, But an action-adventure is also an adventure game.
Well, you can die in a quest, but not like in other adventure games. In simon the sourceror you can also die but it's still an adventure, it's just that the places where you die are predefined...
Indy's desktops adventures for example is not a action adventure and not a quest.. I don't know if there's a sub-genre of that game...

LOLLOLLOLLOL

but you fight there alot!

And you can die 1000 times

its more like an adventure!

Its not RPG
but it is a very long game which you fight in it
adventure..

and BTW what are Ultima 8 and 9?

Ultima something like 4-7 were RPGs

but in 8 and 9 you're alone..

=\

well now days most adevtures are grapgic adevntures...
you used to have two types of adevntures:[*] graphic adventures:
point and click, or keyboard[*] text adventures:
use text to travel, or even only text and nothing graphical

-Adventure (aka Quest): Games that require mental skills, talking, pursuading, solving puzzles, etc. Free combat is not included, at least not most of the time.
Ex. Monkey Island, The longest journey, Myst, Zork.

-Action: Games that have pure action and puzzle solving.
Ex.Tomb Rider

-Action/Adventure: A mix of the two genres above. Includes puzzle solving, major diologe interaction, and plenty of fighting as well. Generally all these things are balanced.
Ex. LBA, Outcast, Shenmue

-RPG: It is like action/adventure only a little bit different. It includes all of the things stated previously, but RPGs often have a group of players controlled by a single person. Often requires a lot of stratigic technics.
Ex. Final Fantasy, Tourment, Fallout, Skies of Arcedia.

At times RPGs also can be made up of almost nothing but pure battle.
Ex. Diablo

Hope this helps

P.S. I heard that the first Zork was a text adventure.
Press left or right.
-Left.
The following things are displayed:.......press a number to close in on a certain area......

MAN...Those games must have required so much imagination.....You had to look at a blank screen and imagine all those things! I don't think I coud have done it....

text adventures totally suck!! i have tried to play plenty of them, but i was never able to finish any or even manage to do some serious progress. you imagine and imagine and imagine.... and some time everything goes black, you forget anything and you close this damn games. i really hate them (still, i tried to play one even now - 3 days ago, but the same happened ). i don't know, but i may try playing again one in the future, this time drawing the surroundings in a paper.

but it just sucks
