An 'outsider's' point of view

Well, I was typing to reply in "the real wrestlefest" thread and BAM! closed... I still feel I have to say this though.

Thankfully what I wrote got saved somehow, so here goes,

You guys probably will not know who I am, but I have been reading the MBN for quite a long time, followed threads, discussions, flame wars and the likes.

About what Battler has just said, I partially agree. There are very few threads open atm about LBA, I could probably count them on one hand. It is true that this undermines the original point of this forum, but I have seen the LBA world discussed into exhaustion and after all these years there simply cannot be many new interesting things to talk about and at the same time manage to keep it on topic for more than a page or two. I love LBA as much as anyone else here, but time has passed and no matter how nostalgic we can be it's hard to talk about LBA without it being said already or sounding exessively stupid or redundant (like some threads analyzing things like "wouldn't it hurt to hide in a cactus like the esmer spies? How do they do it?"). I understand it is fun to overanalyze at times, and maybe it's one of the few things a community like this can keep on topic with, especially for 'oldies' who have read/seen/talked about everything imaginable.

About this oldies newbies distinction, Battler has a very good point. Now, I may be a newbie at posting, but I've been around since 2006 and since I recently started wanting to actively participate, I can tell you guys that I have found it very hard to find a place where I could insert myself into a thread and start posting. Almost everywhere there is either a flame war, clash of beliefs, or general complaining. It is not easy for anyone not already involved for a while to chip in, contribute, simply because most conversations are specific to the individuals involved.

There should be a little more openness and opportunity for discussion by anyone and not solely the people who regularly visit.

I speak for myself but I would not be surprised if i'm not the only one. Anyway, after all, I've grown to like this place a lot despite direct inactivity, and I would hate for it to fall apart.

Pimmin seems just fine though.

In the end, you can see how we just implemented the new rules backwards throughout 2013, so I don't think there's much flamewars you'd get in.

Look: Noone, noone - noone is stopping anybody from positively contributing.

If you have something to say, to share, go on. The fact that exists or not a lot of personal fights going on in almost every thread, does not prevent you from chiming in and saying something. If people like what you say they will react to it, etc.

That's how every member here eventually became active...

sgk: Think of it this way: it's like a message in a bottle. In our world, we put a message inside a bottle to protect it while it travels through the oceans to reach some other island. In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

I just read that thread as well. My two cents:

- The Roofles Den is an opt-in forum, so it's not true it's harmful to the newbies.
- The MBN has 18 forums dedicated solely to LBA. Off topic is more active, but it's crazy to say it has usurped the MBN's purpose. 18 forums! Nothing is stopping anyone from using those.
- You don't have to participate in the flamewars and such. You can simply ignore them. They won't affect you in any way. That's what I do these days. (I don't have the patience anymore).

Edit: I guess I didn't address the things Styx said, I was thinking of OBrasileiro. Sorry about that.

Nothing is actively preventing anyone from writing anything of course, but surely you see what I mean by the general atmosphere not being very encouraging at times? I'm not expressing disapproval, only an alternate pov.

Someone started a great on-topic thread recently I think, you should join in with that.

Food for thought:

This is no moderator decision. It's clear why we discuss so much off-topic in here: the forum is 12 years old! We're interested on what other members are doing besides caring about LBA, (picture thread, music, how was your day, language discussion), since we've already seen each other online for so long.

But LBA isn't a profession.

I'd really be interested in some more of the inner workings of LBA and how modding works, but alas, most of the modding development has happened off-site. You know more about LBA's technical side than most, why don't you go ahead and start a thread in LBA Modifications about what you want to discuss?
For example, I'd be interested to hear more about the Japanese version of LBA right now, for example. I could maybe use it to practice my language skills a bit more. I hear you're the expert on this.
