PM limits

So, as I stated in the other thread, I'm going to further discuss PM limits here. Or better, I'm going to ask why we even need PM limits? Or at least, why do they have to be so small? Yes, I can understand it was needed back 10 years ago when space limits were much smaller, but is this really still the case now? I personally think the PM limits here should be either at least doubled, or removed altogether.

A lot. I'm right below the limit, and I've had to delete PM's, like 10 times recently.

Haha, the irony.

I've got the same PM problem as you Battler, everytime I have a conversation with someone, I get an email because my inbox is almost full. And I don't want to delete all of them, because I'd like to keep things for reference. Things like exporting etc are just too much to deal with, compare it to Gmail's limit.

Not sure why there is this limit, but I try to bypass it by continuing conversations over email. Regardless, I'd like to know as well.

The limit exists because once upon a time, the available space and bandwidth were ridiculously small, which was the norm in that era. So it was logical to limit resource usage. But now we're in 2013, and the space and bandwidth this forum has available are likely bigger than 10 years ago so the PM limits no longer make sense.

Maybe we should just ask to raise it for everyone, or DF or El could shed some light why they think it's still needed the way it currently is.

Well, I'm not sure myself.
Though I remember it's already been doubled once years ago after I asked about it. That was in about 2006. But since then it has remained unchanged.

I guess the problem is simply that the PM limit wasn't designed with this forum's longevity in mind. You've been a member here for 9 years already. That's a lot of time to accumulate PM™s.

It would be nice if it could be changed, yeah...
Not that there isn't a workaround, but as a human, I like it when things require less effort

Well... it's a forum, not an instant messaging platform. Either way, I shifted the limit a bit

sgk: Think of it this way: it's like a message in a bottle. In our world, we put a message inside a bottle to protect it while it travels through the oceans to reach some other island. In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.
