LBA controls

Hello MBN!

I was trying to introduce my 2 smaller cousins (13 and 17) to lba2 just for fun and to see if they could get into it, and I was really surprised to see how much they struggled to get the hang of the movement controls. They have been playing for a couple of hours and it kills me to watch them bump into things, turn in the wrong directions, tap the arrows expecting twinsen to jerk to the side etc.

Most of the time the go backwards instead of forwards (especially when twinsen is facing them) because the press the up arrow expecting him to go 'up' on the screen too but instead he just walks backwards...

Im wondering, is this a generation problem? How has modern gaming made kids oblivious to this type of control scheme? I can't really relate because for me it's so intuitive by now!

Thoughts on this matter are welcome

It's not only this generation.
The controls were always difficult to manage. Usually people that don't play that much get really troubled to use it. Also, it depends how often then actually play on a keyboard, without a mouse or gamepad.

People are used to camera-relative stuff these days I guess. Very few games have "tank" controls.
Console games are almost exclusively camera on one stick and movement on the other. For 3d games this has the advantage of being able to align the camera and then just hit forward. Normally when running about you thus steer your movement, somewhat weirdly, with the camera.
Once your used to a control scheme you tend to stop even thinking about it.

I agree with xesf here; Tank controls like the ones in the LBA series have always been tricky for people to get the hang of and to master, it's not really a new problem only affecting newer generations of gamers. My opinion is that, given time and dedication, any generation can master it if they so choose. Though there may be less and less in coming generations that accept these kinds of controls in favour of more intuitive systems. Let's face it, even if tank controls are wonderful in their own right and fun to master, it's far from the most intuitive control scheme out there.

Come on, leave the kids alone
I struggled a lot to get used to the mouse+keyboard controls and still dislike them. I still tend to have the camera oriented slightly towards the ground, it make of playmate go mad whe I play CS:GO

Btw Styx, how did they like it ?

Well neither of them have gotten past the tralu cave yet. And both found it EXTREMELY difficult to figure out that they needed to use the tunic to allow the ball to bounce and hit the lever and open the first door; and to be fair I couldn't see how that's straightforward or hinted at at all, I wonder how long it took me to figure that out 20 years ago...

They seemed to like it, despite getting frustrated with the controls.

The most prominent observation I have made when I see new people play the game (including my sister amongst the test subjects) is that nobody has the instinct to explore the game to find hints to solve the quests. Maybe it's because I was watching but most of the time I simply got asked 'so what do I have to do? Where do I go?' without them making any effort to look around and chat to NPCs without explicit instructions from the game. It didn't even cross their minds that they had to find out where the pharmacy was by simply roaming/randomly chatting, instead of the game simply telling them where to go - It felt that they expected a much more linear approach to the storytelling.

Once I'll have moved in Montreal, I'll stream my girlfriend playthrough the second game. We'll see if she's able to figure it out!
