what do you know about softonic?

it's been years and years that I avoid downloading anything from Softonic, because I'm sure it's a malware site 'n shit, but recently I tried downloading avira free from their official site, as I just built a pc for my gf. And, surprise, surprise, their goddamn official website links directly to softonic when you click on the green button to download avira free. This only happens in the italian website.
(avira.com/it). Unfortunately, I only realized what I had done AFTER I installed avira. I thought "Well, maybe this is supposed to happen", but avira.com linking directly to another site was just weird for me. I decided to call the assistance number, and surprise surprise, they didn't know that their website's italian page linked directly to softonic. Neither the call center girl, neither the technicians could tell me if that thing was "normal". I suspect they have a mole working for them or something... anyway, that link is still there, and I'm mad as hell because I don't know what kind of shit that website could have installed on the PC and no antivirus finds anything wrong with that pc. I'm thinking about wiping everything and install the OS again... and that's a big pain the ass considering all the problems windows is giving with their updates -_-
Do you have any advice?

No advice as such, but I can tell you its 100% possible for an existing virus/malware to change the links on a page to point elsewhere.
If thats the case you already had something before you downloaded Avira.

I can only advise running antivirus, as you have done, but also RootKit removal stuff like tdsskiller. As advised to someone else; Get a boot CD and use that to run this sort of software, to remove the chance an infection is stopping your AVs from working correctly.

DF - probably I wasn't clear enough, sorry. Avira.com either has been hacked or they have a mole , because the site directly links to softonic, even their technicians could prove that as they were speaking with me... that only happens from avica.com/it though, other languages don't have that problem. It's so weird they didn't fix it yet, even if they said that "this is weird!"

Just check it by yourself, it's still there
http://www.avira.com/it/avira-free-a...art-download-1
clicking on the green button will lead you to that external website 99% of the times...

Something very fishy is going on. They told me they had to "start a case" before doing anything, the neither the technician nor the call center girl were sure if that was normal of not. Well of course it isn't -_- I got the impression they were trying to cover the presence of a security break. But they suggested me to remove the software I had accidentally installed from softonic and download avira from the download center.

I'm seriously thinking about letting more poeple know about this. If their security is so weak, I doubt their product can be trusted. How do we know that the antivirus itself isn't infected with some malware?

Yes, let people know. Shout it from the rooftops.

Sounds to me like the people on the phone just follow a script of normal problems people have, and you throw them an unexpected issue so they didnt know how to deal with it.

Let people know about it, for sure... if they let a security breach like that happen, people deserve to know what is going on so that they don't get viruses and things like that from the website.

Polaris - unless you click on the green button AND run the file that the external website automatically downloads, nothing happens
I can't do much with a youtube account with only 130 subscribers (but i'll find some time to make a video)and a fb page with 400 likes... if you have other means, please do that.

So much for Avira, they cannot even keep their own site safe.
