Sounds like XP, that also needs a lot of customising before it's workable. Spyware installed by default though...?

alexfont: Debian is great, it has an automated package manager like Gentoo's emerge, only it's more mature, faster and efficient. I used to dislike Debian for being super conservative with new updates; you were pretty much forced to use a 2.2 kernel a few years back while 2.4 was already more than stable, and running a system on 'unstable' would often break dependencies. I switched to Gentoo for that reason, which is indeed a fresh and progressive distro. Now I mainly use Debian again, the 'testing' version (between stable and unstable) is very usable.

Anyway, if it's for desktop usage I'd recommend Ubuntu, it's based on Debian and seems to be the single best desktop OS out there.

If you want 'like Gentoo' as in compiling everything manually, then I guess Slackware is indeed the way to go. There's no other distro that is comparable to Gentoo I guess.

Any new OS feels weird and unfriendly at first, and it's just frustrating because you can't figure out how to do certain things. This feels dumb because in your old situation with a familair OS you would have done it in a fraction of the time it takes now. I was new to OS X some months back and I remember I felt very uncomfortable with it, so I know exactly what it feels like. It just takes a while to get used to things and to know where you can find what before it's starting to get workable. You shouldn't just disregard an entire OS / desktop environment without doing any effort or actively working in it for at least a week or so.

Not saying you should use Linux CF, I also have my reasons to primarily use Windows, it's just that you shouldn't just bash it and abandon it. If you ever get a new pc, keep the old one and install Linux on that or something, if you ever want to give it another go.

To be honest I just expressed my own frustration.
Now that I'm a little familiar with Linux next time I'll try it it'll probably be easier. Just taking a break

And yes, Windows Vista comes with bundled spyware. Not surprising, since Google is all about spyware when you take a moment to think about it, and Vista is trying to be a weapon against Google.
