Basically, if your doing it with partitions, make sure windows is on the first.
I was able to install XP on drive 'F' and it worked and Fedora is on the first drive.

Just doesn't work.

The boot mangers know were windows is, can hand control over...but its windows itself that wont boot, it isn't the boot managers fault.
All it needs to do is just see the boot.ini file then it'll work for me.
I've been able to successfully install it this way 3 times on different machines.

Drive leter dosnt make a difference, the partition does.
I bet that drive F is on the first partition.

Alternatively, the boot manager for windows is on the first partition, and windows isnt. (I had this set up before when I installed an OS, then installed another on a different drive, then replaced the first).

No, it's the 3rd drive on the 2nd partition.

Yes, it's MBR. Grub virtually replaces it and then looks at the boot.ini file.

Well, you were very very lucky then.
I was trying for 3 weeks, posted on many different forums, and the conclusion was "cant be done". (at least, not automaticaly, not easily, and not by just editing grub's ini).

Quote:
4.5 Booting an operating system interactively with a grub in-
stallation disk

4.5.1 Overcoming a limitation of the Windows Bootloader
The Windows bootloader will only boot from the first hard disk (“first” is defined by the
bios
before the operating system starts). How can we boot Windows from the second
hard disk? By having grub tell the
bios
to swap the hard disks, so that it thinks /dev/hdc
is the first hard disk, and /dev/hda is the second hard disk. Read about the map grub
command in the grub manual; see section 3.6 on page 5.

Note; The map command dosnt handel partitions, only the hard drive as a whole. So how it works on the second drive on yours I have no idea.

Make active also, apperently dosnt work unless its the primary partion.

Is there some new version of grub perhapes? Allthough this was only a month or two ago.

Booting windows results in the dos-like;

"Starting up ..." but then freezes.

I admit I havnt tried this on XP, but Im 90% sure its boot process is basicaly the same as 2K's.

Quote:
No, it's the 3rd drive on the 2nd partition.
Windows bootloader can still be on the primary partition even if the os isnt.(even if its booting grub first, this can be the case).

I can't wait!
I'm going to be upgrading my PC thoroughly.
Here's what I'll be getting once I have done enough jobs. (Prices are in AUD)
AMD64 x2/4000+ CPU + MSI K9N6SGM-V - $190
nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB - unknown
2x 320GB SATA Seagate - $113(each)
Cooler Master Stacker 830 - RRP $290 (can get one better and cheaper, but this is a good one)
AVLabs AVL320 (5.1) - RRP $165 (can get same one cheaper at different place)

Not sure on monitor but I want to get a nice 21" HD TFT.
Ram? Don't know yet. Video editing takes up a bit so I'm thinking 4GB but not sure on brand.
Power supply is still unknown at this time.
Cooling system is being looked at.

Anyway,
Today's desktop (Windows)

The background was a photograph taken by my friend.

Lots of stuff here to snoop around on, probably the most used icon is COH (Company of Heroes).

Wow dude that background is awesome, and the top right taskbar looks really handy.

Shame Ubuntu doesn't work on my pc, never tried xubuntu though.

Pink Floyd, good choice of music.

Here's mine, I recently downloaded StyleXP and it applied this theme to test if it worked. I liked it so I stuck with it.

StyleXP is good for nothing bloatware, you really should use UXTheme MultiPatcher instead.

Thanks , I'm not sure where I originally got the background, but it is available here. Xubuntu and Ubuntu are fundamentally similar, the only major difference being the desktop environment (XFCE instead of Gnome), but if you had trouble with Uby because you're running an older system, Xubuntu may be able to help with that.
