The Evil Do-ers thread

Hey folks

First things first- I'm not trying to start any form of flame war or hostility with this thread, it's just I have a question about something but I can't for the life of me think where else to post it.

I understand the diea of having a thread to point out who's banned and who's currently warned and why. What I don't understand is why this thread has a section on those who aren't banned anymore.

Ok, I certainly understand why a record should be kept for a short time about who is no longer banned, so that folks know that there time being banned is over. But why are their offenced on this list? And isn't the tone a little emotive for this? Also, many of those on the not banned list havn't been banned for years. Do we really still need a record of why T@!!&$
was banned for a week in December of 2004?

Why not change this to keep a (short) list of who was unbanned within the last month (say)? I know most of the time it'll be empty- and thats surly a good thing- but for people who were unbanned years ago there seems to be no need to keep a record of why that happened. Or even that it did. It just doesn't seem to be relevant anymore. So why do we keep a public record of such old bannings on the MBN

There's maybe one reason- so that new folks know the rules. But surly thats why we have a forum rules thread?

It's good to be able to see what's happened before.
There's a lot of history with this forum.
Also to see if previous offences reoccur, I suppose.
That would probably mean a more serious sanction on the second time.

For how long?

Most of the temporary ban offences listed happened years ago, and were relativly minor, otherwise I'd expect the ban to be longer than the one listed. It makes sense to keep a list of offences with the typical punishment for such.

Furthermore, while I can see why one would want a record of past offences on the logic that if they do it again they should recieve a more severe sentence. What I don't understand is why that should be a permament thing. Ok, for some stuff yes, like posting photos of others without permision.

But why should a user of the forums have the fact that three years ago they were banned for a week for spamming a few threads hanging over them? Keep in mind that theoreticaly, all new members are meant to read that thread- that means that everyone should know this. That will effect the way people treat those people who have (from the fact that they havn't done it again and got themselves a permament ban) matured since then. If that makes sense.

An interesting case. I can see maybe archiving some of the offenses and such, since some are beyond the point of relevance (i.e. the member doesn't post here anymore).

At the same time, I mean, it is good to know why people were banned, especially if you go back and look at old posts.

Temporarily warnings are rarely noted.

And I've never head any affected ever complain about his/her's name being there.

A lot of less serious bans are not recorded.
There's a complex system going on here...

It's the system of moderator inactiveness/laziness at times.

I wonder if Lightwing and Atresica move around silently though.
From the small appearance of Lightwing in Anakin's banning it would appear this is true, but he might just want us to think that...

You'll find just about everything I'm willing to say about myself over the internet on my user profile. In terms of my MBNness- as you may have noticed I joined (formally) in February 2006, have not posted a lot. I only post when I feel I have something worth saying, so months can pass before I post. In fact due to this, I was lurking on the forums for about six months before I joined the MBN 'proper'.

Have been a fan of LBA since 1995, was somewhat disapointed when certain logics were different in LBA2 (My initial reaction when told to get a wizards diploma was to try to steal the weather wizards, on the logic that thats how one gets the pirate flag and key to Twinsens cellar).

Why do you ask? And why does it matter?

The thread you're talking about was made a long time ago when we barely had any bans. Since then keeping up with bans has been difficult due to the numerous amount of spammers. Also, there's a record for mods and admins as to each person banned on a seperate section of the MBN, so I guess that kinda adds to the laziness factor of updating that thread.

CiB, I just - for some reason - found it funny that someone I've never seen before should come here and post a long complaint about an inconceivably minimal issue like the "Evil Doers" thread. I mean, who the fuck cares about that.

But I understand you might be interested in those things, and I didn't mean to neglect your participation in the forums. Keep doing your thing. Chillaxing might be a good idea, you don't have to worry about posting only when you have a new law of physics figured out. One should have a good time here!

Well if it's not beign updated (much- Anakins recent offense is on there), and the record exists elsewhere for those who have a reson to know, why keep the thread stickied? In fact, why keep it at all? From what you've said Lightwing, it doesn't appear to have a purpose anymore.

Atresica explained here the purpose of the thread.

And it is being updated regularly. Since I became a mod, that is (before that it contained like 1 year irrelevant stuff),.

Seems like a good reason.

And hopefully that can close the discussion!
