Default MBN theme

Is it just me, or is this:

quite ugly?

No offence to anyone who might like it, but it's just very unaesthetic. The title background image is a messy mess and somewhat childish (and not in a good way) and the bright white everywhere is eye piercing. Downright bad design.

I know not everyone like dark design, but how about changing the default to the "vBulletin Grey" theme? It's somewhere in the middle, and it's nice and aesthetic. Perfect for newcomers.

Opinions?

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and choose them from the "quick style chooser" dropbox on the left to check them out.

I prefer the white one. It's good and for me, it's not eye-piercing.

Yes but the question is what should be the default theme? Once someone registers they can change the theme, but is the white one really a good default? A default should be something that most everyone is ok with.

Change it to the best theme: vBulletin Classic.

Edit: actually I think it's good to have the default theme being different from the theme you use. You can tell whether you're logged in. And as the default one is the ugliest, I suppose most people don't use it.

I fluctuate between the Dark Monk and Island themes pretty much. Honestly, if I had to vote, I'd say the Island theme should be the default, just because it has the most LBA-ish feel, imho.

yeah, don't make this a normal boring grey v-bulletin forum. I remember when I first came on the MBN, a few years ago, and I liked the LBA-ish theme on the main page. But yeah, if u wanna change it, maybe we could, but we should keep it LBA-ish

I think in general people prefer a cleaner forum style than something like "Island".
So I don't really see that making that default is a good idea.
I don't really find the top banner very intrusive anyway, although I see what Ido means.
Maybe we could just remove the LBA2 picture and just have the logo on white?

That would be a good solution.

But I don't like a clear white background there, sure the picture isn't great, but it's better than nothing.

I'm confused at this. Is Google's homepage also a bad design? If it's hurting your eyes, turn your brightness down; that's why monitors have a brightness control in the first place.

Agree that the header picture is a bit childish though. Maybe a replacement picture would suffice?

Echomote - Have you ever watched a picture of a lamp on your monitor? Your eyes hurts even though the actual image content contains less white than a plain white screen.

How about changing it to a colour that associates with LBA like the colour of Twinsen's tunic or something? White just makes it seem like any old website, I think if it was blue it would definitely make it feel much more distinct from other sites, and bring out the LBA feel.

Google's homepage is horrible. The only time it was pleasant to look at was in Earth Day when they changed the background to black.

ChaosFish you're definitely in the minority about this, I can't understand why you would possibly want dark backgrounds on everything, it's just so unnatural to read. Afterall, we're all used to reading black text on white paper, not the other way around.

White text on black backgorund is bazillions times easier to read. Everyone I told it to, and showed it to, were surprised at how true it is.

Black on white is only "natural" because of the times when the only viable way to write was with black ink.

Black text on white paper can also be really annoying. Black text on yellow paper is way better. Black would most likely be too much contrast to the surroundings though, unless you paint your entire living room black.
