Breaking News: Wii Will NOT Feature Backwards Compatibility

http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=7243

Quote:
News - Sony VP comments on PS3's backwards compatibility; says Wii has none
Posted by Josh Freund at 11:04:26 PM EST on 11.16.2006.

Game|Life's Chris Kohler recently had a chance to talk to Sony executive vice president and co-chief operating officer Jack Tretton. One of the main topics discussed was the PS3's backwards compatibility, and specficially, the minor problems that have been reported to occur with about 200 PS1/PS2 games. Here's what Tretton thinks about the matter:

"I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast, but that's an unrealistic expectation. We've reported problems on only 200 of the 8000 PlayStation 1 and 2 games. I would challenge the average consumer to say that there are significant problems with any of the games in their library."

He goes on to compare this with the BC offered by Nintendo and Microsoft:

"If you look at our competitors, one machine has zero backwards compatibility and one only has it with a third of their games."

Yeah...Mr. Tretton should probably double-check his facts before doing interviews in the future.

Tretton also briefly mentioned the issue of PS3 launch numbers. It seems the launch number "changes on a daily basis," and he can't give a definitive answer. Sony still expects 1 million units shipped by the end of 2006, and 6 million worldwide by the end of the fiscal year.

You've got to love Sony. I'll still buy their console (eventually), but I can't believe they're so successful when they're so...inept.

Another thing which makes me hate Sony even more. They're all about lies!

well it's true... the gamecube isn't backwards compatible

he doesn't say he's talking about the Wii
the Wii isn't out yet, so it's not competing with the PS3 or XBox360 right now

That would still be an stupid statement, since Wii will arrive before PS3.

now we can see why all of the backward compatibility on the ps3 is not functioning quite a bit. a lot of ps2 and ps1 games don't work.
but sony saying that is..

Wii is released tommorow in the US.
1 week difference in release in the US.
Wii first in europe by 1/4 to 1/2 a year.

It hardly gives sony an excuse for that comment.

Also, previously they commented the Wii online "free for 6 months", when its actualy "web browser is included free for 6 months".
Which is completely different. (online gameing is always free, just like the DS)

Sony *loves* to spread ignorance about their compeditors.

Poor Jasiek, he didn't read the thread thoroughly and probably just posted because of the thread title.

I thought it could play gamecube games, if being able to play gamecube games isn't backward compatible, I'd like to know the meaning of the words.

like I'd give a damn about WII or PS3 or XBOX360 ... I don't have any console and I'll probably never have one so screw those who decided to prive us PC users from games just cause US geeks have 3 consoles in the basement , one lended to a friend and other 2-3 in the livingroom , lying God knows where ... just cause they can afford a console every 2-3 months doesn't mean that global game production has to cut more than 50% of the PC games in console's favour ... I mean 2003 was the top year of PC games ... remember when we used to play GTA Vice City , Libery City , NFS Porche , Hot Pursuit II , all sorts of FIFA , Indiana Johnes , Legacy of Kain , Syberia , Prince of Persia , Soldier of Fortune , Max Payne , Hitman , Mafia , etc. ... remebmer all those great titles ? now look at 2006 ... 3-4 games per year , games which are expected 2 years in advance , offering SUPERBE graphics ( thus 600-700 $ for a compatible PC ) , 1 hour of play and that's it ... nobody remembers them next month cause CONSOLES rule the market nowadays ... screw them again

Pfft consoles. Just buy a pc-compatible controller and and hook your PC with your TV, and use emulators if you have to.

Choas, dont start a console/pc debate please.

Also, some of us like paying for our games. We emulate because its the only way we can play them, not because dont want too pay.
--
Quetch ~ Consoles last typicaly 4-5 years. Which gives developers fixed spec to work too. So from a development standpoint they are much cheaper/easier to develop for.
Also, far, far, far, far more games are sold on consoles.
You can hardly blame developers for going for the bigger, easier market.

(However, If you look towards FPS or Statergs, PC is still in the lead. Those genras work better, thus they sale better, thus they are better supported.)

Quote:

This is universal to both consoles and pc's, sadly.
People demand graphical detail, but dont want to pay more, therefor the games get shorter.

Quotene only has it with a third of their games

What does that mean?
Its refering to the Xbox360, which dosnt have total compatibility with older games.
1/3rd is probably a lie, mind, as Microsoft has been posting firmware updates to the 360 since release, each one fixing a dozen or so new games.
Its also worth noteing the Xbox360 is *emulateing* the Xbox1, which is a very hard task. Sony's playstation merely includes the previous gen's chip and they still get it wrong

?
I didn't mean to sound too serious... anyway. Sorry if I offended you or something.

I didn't mean you shouldn't buy games, be astonished but I buy piratable stuff too.
I meant that there's a little point forcing people to buy hardware they already got in another form (PC instead of console, with same capabilities) in order for them to play a specific software (games).

You mean you wouldve preffered the wii-mote to be made for PC? I doubt it would have much things at all written for it at all if it were made for PC

You could buy some hack to the wii-mote that would make it interact with a PC

I think there should be a law that operating systems in sale(to save the consoles the problem of running PC soft) would HAVE to be able to run all software that is on the market, be that a console game, a PC game or a linux program. I wouldn't really give a puddle of goo how much trouble would the developers have, there should be standarization, and the sooner, the lesser trouble they will have in the future with it.

Yeah, could make sense. You don't have to buy four different CD players to be able to listen to all kinds of music, for example.
