Odd question about resolutions

my resolution is 1440x900

now what i would like, for games (for higher FPS ), is a resolution without stretching, but low..

So what's like my widescreen alternative to 800x600

somewhere between 768x480 and 960x600.
Your aspect ratio is 16:10, so you can calculate other resolutions yourself

You should check out this site if your game doesn't support widescreen resolution natively.

800x600 = 480000 pixals

1440/900 = 1.6 (ratio)

Thus, your looking for:

Width x Height = 480000
and
Width / Height = 1.6

Therefor:

Width = 480000 / Height

(480000 / Height) / Height = 1.6
(480000 / Height^2 ) = 1.6
(480000/ 1.6 ) = Height^2

Height^2 = 300000

So for an exact "widescreen alternative to 800x600" you want:

Height = 547.723....
Width = 876.356
(lets call it 548x876)

Widescreen makes sense, since we have a widescreen vision. Unless you squint or something.

It's great when you frequently watch widescreen tv series / movies on computer screen, it like doubles the video size. If well implemented in games it increases your field of view which can be quite nice.

I've gotten used to 1280x1024 on a 17" TFT and I really didn't want anything smaller than that, I think 1440x900 is a bit limited in vertical number of pixels. Widescreens of 20" (1680x1050) and up are great though, and widescreen is the only option if you want anything bigger than 20" (1600x1200).

That's bullshit. Effective view isn't widescreen. The corner of the eye thing isn't very interesting. But also, it's not like the monitors fill up the whole viewing area.

The only reason movies were made in widescreen was to reduce the length of the tape and the speed it had to go through the camera (if the speed was too high the film would break). But this was back in the early days, there's no reason for movies to be shot only in widescreen.

The problem with widescreen is that you have less workspace on the same diagonal.
Like wacko said, a 20" widescreen will add some gain over a 17" normal screen. Ofcourse 20" TFTs are rather expensive.

I like my widescreen, if games support it it can give a real epic feeling (World of Warcraft always seems like a fantasy movie in widescreen, to give an example). Also, watching movies rocks

Nope, but you have got two eyes arranged horizontaly.
The overlap is in the middle, but you still see a lot more left and right then you do up/down.
Idly, for maximum "immersion" the screen should be wide, with the focal point/detail in the center. Detail and certainly be a lot less towards the edges, but your eyes still see it.
(in a crude way, thats what those tvs with lights at the side do)

Id guess then screens with a resolution "full off" would be the most eye-like.
Allthough that would be utterly pointless to make.

Another point is, as humans, we are a lot more used to see/tracking objects on a horizontal plane. We hardly ever look up or down in comparison.

The dissadvantages with widescreen on pc's is less to do with the eye and more to do with software , imo.
eg. if your reading something, if the "maximise" button resizes it to fill the complete screen you have to move your head to read each line
One widescreens, the max button should pretend the screen is in 4:3, as thats a nicer reading ratio, imo.

I installed Windows 2000 yesterday, and I tried 2142 on it on 800x600 - it actually made the picture square (just cut off the sides with black). Is there a way to do this in XP?

(note: I had to use omega drivers with my graphics card in 2000, and sadly that doesn't work very great, or maybe 2142 just runs bad in 2000...)
