Ok, my answer: [list][*] Remember, Big N is even more capitalist than Sony (for me), and i´ll always hate it (hmm... useless, sorry).
(Are you mad? Sony makes Music,PCs,DVDs,VIDEO AND the PSX. Nintendo make Consoles and Games, and is over 100 years old[used to make trading cards])[*] You can compare the PSX to SNES because:
1. It have a simmilar success
(The PSX is in fact much, much more successful then the SNES,its second only to the Gameboy it terms of sales)
2. It have the support of big softhouses, like the snes have in the past
(True, mainly because sony dosn't 'quality check' 3rd party games like Nintendo)
3. It have great games from those softhouses
(Its has a FEW good games amongst the majority of the rubish)
4. The PSX is originnaly a alliance of Nintendo and Sony: Sony was projecting a add-on for snes who could make him play cd games, but in the middle of the project Nintendo reliquish the project. Sony use the old prototipe to make the psx.
(err..I already knew that.Personaly I am glade the add-on never came out, it would been like a 'Mega-CD')
Put simply Nintendo havn't 'failed' with the N64, it just wasn't as successfull as the playstation.
Besides look what Nintedo has done for the games industary:

Sholder buttons
Analog Stick
Trigger Button
3D Platformers (would there have been Spyro without Mario64?)
Force Feedback controll-pads (Would there have been a dual shock pad without the rubble packfirst?)
4 Player as standered (Sony STILL make people buy a multitap, even with the PS2)
First Backwards Compatable Console (the GBC)
Whats Sony done?:
Made the games market bigger.
Made Money.
Made More Money.
Spent Loads of Money on PS2 Hype.
Made Money
