The Quetch - There and Back Again

Slowly and groggily, Twinsen opened his eyes.
He turned his head to try and take in his environment.
He was lying down as what appeared to be some sort of operating table, in what could only be some sort of laboratory.
To his distress, he found that he was firmly restrained to the table and could not get up despite his most desperate efforts.
He suspected that he had been drugged, since he felt dizzy and disoriented.
Despite his intoxicated state, he could feel panic begin to rise as he comprehended his situation.

"Where...where am I?" he finally managed.
A voice answered him, cold and uninvolved.
"You're being held here because you're a trouble maker. An informant told us you claim to have prophetic dreams. Calm down, we're going to dissec- I mean take care of you."

All of a sudden a torrent of memories flooded Twinsen's mind.
He remembered escaping from the asylum on Citadel Island, traveling the world to save his girlfriend Zoe and even flying to another planet in order to rescue the children and wizards of Twinsun. How could he be back in the asylum suddenly?
"But..but I escaped from here.. I defeated Dr. FunFrock!"
The voice chuckled.
"Oh have you now? I'm sorry to disappoint you like this, but FunFrock is still very much alive and in power. And what's this talk about escape? you were only brought in here yesterday."

Twinsen could hear the sound of footsteps on a metallic floor and the owner of the voice came into view. A Quetch in a white coat looked at him with bemused curiosity.
The Quetch read aloud as he wrote the following in the medical sheet he was holding in his hand. "The patient seems to have experienced hallucinations as a result of the medication administered to him. There is cause to suspect delusions of grandeur as well."

Twinsen couldn't believe what he was hearing. This couldn't be happening. He had a clear memory of escaping this place and saving the planet.
"That's not true!" he cried. "I did escape from here, and I met Sendell, the benevolent goddess!".
The Quetch just stared at him, the look of amusement now replaced by one of pity.
"Why, of course you have." he said briskly, and then walked away.

"I'M SPEAKING THE TRUTH" Twinsen screamed. "WHERE'S ZOE? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HER?!".
The Quetch turned around to face him again.
"'Done with her' you ask? Why, nothing at all. In fact your girlfriend has been most cooperative throughout all this debacle. Who do you think it was that tipped the pharmacist off? She's grown tired of your crazy dreams and claims of being some sort of messiah. And can you blame her? who could put up with such a megalomaniac living in their house?"

Despair began to take over Twinsen. Suddenly the implausibility of his memories began to become clear to him. The idea of meeting a goddess and saving the world began to seem more ridiculous with every passing moment. "Zoe..how could you?" he thought to himself.

"So..what happens now?" he asked, trembling.
"Oh, not to worry. You'll be put out of your misery soon enough." he said, and held up a syringe with an unfamiliar liquid inside.
A sadistic smile grew on the Quetch's face as he started walking towards Twinsen.

TO BE MAYBE CONTINUED!!!

... so, that's the begginning of LBA 3 ?

You've stinged me with a sudden sadness while reading this by making me even consider this possibility. Just so you know. Bastard.

sgk: Think of it this way: it's like a message in a bottle. In our world, we put a message inside a bottle to protect it while it travels through the oceans to reach some other island. In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

Most people will probably disagree but I think it would be awesome if that were to happen.

Personally I was never too thrilled about the series leaving the dark tone of LBA1 behind in favor of the disney atmosphere of LBA2.

I think LBA 2 is perfect the way it is, remember the game is in fact for kids and back then, it was not disney at all (and I don't think it is even now). We've all grown a hell lot since then, but you should look at the games with children eyes. I don't know with what age you've played it, but I was 7 and the esmers invasion was as much a "dark tone" as LBA1. The difference is that you had some notion of peace and quiet before things get worse - which makes it all more interesting.

Actually, no.

But it does make for a pretty good story for a fanfic, I admit I'm actually hoping for a sequel on this because of the many possibilities and further consequences it implies - for example, what happens to Arthur? was Zoé pregnant back then? etc.

It's a too dark storyline, I doubt they would ever go with that. but if they do... The result could be very interesting !

SGK who said the game was made "In fact" for kids?

There's nothing "for kids" in lba1. It's like saying the Dark Crystal, Krull, The Labirynth, Dragon Slayer, Neverending Story where made for kids... While it is the adults that get the most fun from them.

LBA1 is a non-patronising fantasy story in the sort of spirit of 80's fantasy films. While LBA2 is in many ways the exact opposite - despite retaining some features of the original.

But "Neverending Story" and "Dark Crystal" ARE for kids.
Atleast, I did watch them with something like 5-8 years old and could perfectly understand them. And "The Labirynth" perhaps for a teenager audience.

Anyway, I was mostly talking of LBA 2.

But this thing, of being for kids or not is a very vague concept, don't you think? because it's obvious people from all ages can/should appreciate it. It's like the Little Prince - it does fit well and is appropriate for kids, but when you're older, you'll see a lot more to it, becoming aware of things you couldn't before and that's the factor that differentiate art from entertainment. They're timeless and age-free.

The main difference is that as a kid you can actually immerse yourself in those things without the barriers of logic and realistic notions...
