Deep breath - Let's Talk iPad

I don't get it.

It's a big iPod Touch. Same flaws, same benefits, but bigger.

It can replace my newspapers and books.

And as far as I can see, it can replace a Macbook 13" and 13" pro.

But it want's to be partnered with something.

I know MacBooks are both for work and being casual, but mostly, they seem casual to me. That's fine. I like not having technology invade my personal space too much. I like small tvs and laptops I can stuff away.

So I'd rather have an iPad than a 13" MacBook or netbook.

When Nintendo first mentioned the DS, they called it a third pillar too. But... no, it became a replacement for Gameboy. Hell, some people call it a Gameboy, like a Wii is just a "Nintendo". It seems to me that Apple already has four pillars of products: Music (all iPods), Phone, Casual (all 13") and Pro (15", 17" and stationary).

Seems to me like they just replaced what goes inside my casual category.

What's your take?

It can't replace MacBooks as it doesn't run OSX, merely a stripped down OSX that's basically the same as the iPhone. It's very closed and you probably can't even browse the filesystem, for example.

No multitasking. This is a big one.

The iPhone apps that run on it turn out to be the main thing instead of an expected extra.

No extra connectivity like a USB port, so you can't really use it to replace a netbook or anything serious.

This is an expensive toy for people who like casual browsing on the couch.

It may become interesting if professional applications like Photoshop become available on it.
It's also altogether a fresh take on touchscreen devices and I'm curious what weird things people will use it for.

Crap as an eBook reader too.
(probably the best option for Comic's, mind you)

No USB port? Thats just crazy. Even google's Nexus has a usb.

Didn't the EU busted them on that?
Either the batteries will be replacable/disposable, or they won't be allowed to sell their shit?

oh, I hope so!
I must admit I didnt check, but it was their policy for awhile. (siting such reasons as "we can save 0.001mm of space inside!" and such rubbish).

Btw, has anyone else been checking out this;

MUCH nicer imho.

Too bad apples getting all the press though.

Kobold: yesterday.

Darkflame: yeah, there were a lot of tablets announced at CES too. I hope they'll get more attention and a boost in software development now that Apple's doing it. Perhaps Android on tablets PCs, with its collection of applications made for touchscreens?

I'm reading a lot of criticism towards the iPad.
There's also the case of the device being quite locked-down:
"Protestors: iPad is nothing more than a golden calf of DRM" on Ars Technica

Yeah. In fact, Ive already seen Android popping up on other devices.
(stuff like those digital-picture-frames, and other minor things).

Wouldnt be at all supprised to see it for tablets.
Then again, judgeing by that Asus video, it seems Windows7 is supprisingly suitable. (probably not nearly so lightweight however).

Yeah, it looks about as closed as you can get

I guess they want it like a games console more then a PC.
Then again, even my Wii has two usb slots and an SD card reader.

i don't understand all this criticism of the ipad.

it's cool because the name sounds like iPod, except it's a pad, so it's called iPad.
that's enough of a justification for making it!

I was surprisingly unimpressed. I mean this truly looks like a device I would not know what to do with that i can't do already in a much more comfortable environment. I highly doubt its going to the next iphone, i can't see it even denting the notebook market.

It's pointless. Maybe when you can jailbreak it and run emulators on it or something it might double up as a useful gaming system, but otherwise its seems to just do what either a laptop or a iPhone can do. And the stuff I can't do on my iPhone I'd still do on my laptop rather than the iPad as it'd be easier.

DF, it looks dreadful. Looks likea flimsy piece of shit. Also, is that a resistive screen? If so, after using a capacitive one, I can never use a resistive one again. The C shits all over the R.

Yes, the iPad does look flimsy, but Apples screens are normaly pretty impact-resistant and durable.

Not what a laptop can do. Laptops can multitask and load whatever you like on.

I wasn't talking about the iPad, I think it looks sturdy. I was talking about that Asus monstrosity. Apple screens are top notch.

And sorry, I guess I didn't phrase it well. What I meant was, there's nothing revolutionary you can do on it (yet, anyway) that you can't do on a iPhone or laptop. Like reading the news or whatever. Limited connectivity is shite too, though I think they'll probably bring out a better model as a v2 with these things, similar to how the iPhone's evolved.

oh, sorry, miss-read you.

Looks fine to me
Dont like the switch at the bottom right, but its no big deal. $490 is a bargain functionality wise.

Of course design is a mater of taste.
Pretty sure it will be durable enough, Asus doesn't have a bad rep in that regard to my knowledge. The times I used EEEpcs they seemed pretty well made.

Absolutely.
I honestly expect version 2 of this to be *massively* better. Hardware with more standard ports, the option of OsX, and a built in camera with some insanely impressive AR apps.

I'm critising the hell out of the iPad mostly because its so really close to being a revolutionary thing but falling just because of some (relatively small) hardware choices.
The next version could well make the impact this one was promising.
They have a good new chip inside they self-designed, but its hardly being used!

For the moment at least this is just a large iPod Touch. And for $500 theres a lot nicer stuff to buy.
In future? maybe not so much.

Yeah, that ASUS looks fine to me too.

I have an EeePC 900. It's been through hell and back and it's still fine. I dropped screwdrivers on the screen while working with it on a ladded near switch cabinets. We've been on roofs together, it even survived a rain once ok.

It has some scratches on the case, but the screen is fine. It took a hit from the aformentioned screwdriver a few times, and a switch ac/dc adapter fell directly on the screen from a meter once and didn't do any damage.
