Just did.

I mean, thieving from Ben and Dan? I'd just feel too guilty.

it's better to buy directly from zombie-cow, they get more money, and it's cheaper than steam. Plus: no steam.

The game doesn't have protection even on Steam, you can just launch the game EXE without Steam running. But yeah, in retrospect buying it directly would have been wiser.

With Steam, in a few years you could look through your games list and remember it, download, and replay the game. Directly from their site, you'll have to rely on your memory, no?

Or you could, like, google who made the game.

Steam won't exist forever (not that media does, but at least you can create a backup).
If you want to have a list of games you played, you can use MobyGames or Notepad as well.

Sometimes license issues come up beyond their controll really. Good-Old-Games had to pull some games awhile back.
Which is why DRM-free games are a must. However, I dont think its particularly bad to lose the ability to redownload. As far as I'm concerned its your responsibility to look after your data, whether its on a disc or not.

In a perfect world, you'd only have to be responsible to look after your private data. (documents, etc.) Everything that is more common should just be up for grabs on the network.

Oh wait... I guess this is a perfect world.

Question is if you're not limited because of Steam to carry that responsibility.
As far as I know you can't just copy into a disc a game you got from Steam (at least not in "standard" ways), and in another case even though I have an original copy of HL2 on discs, I won't be able to play it without some workaround if Steam disappears one day.

Ok, people, let's make something perfectly clear. You CAN and it's EASY to burn games weather you bought them with Steam or just got them on a torrent. It's just not LEGAL.

So if you're ANAL, tough luck for you.

And you can also PIRATE games and not use Steam at all, SO?
It isn't about the DIFFICULTY of doing that, it's about the BUSINESS MODEL. You don't BUY a game off Steam, you just RENT it as far as they tell.

Can you COMPREHEND that?

My point is... It's all digital information. The day is near when people finally realize and accept what they already know: that information (and by that I mean common information, not private data) cannot and should not be controlled and restricted.

Yes you can "pirate" it. Easily, without a problem, and no one can stop you. Buying information is an act of decency. If the other side is being indecent and tells you "oh wait it was just a rent, give it back", there's nothing stopping you from ignoring them.

Because it's information. Information can't move, it can only be copied.

Some games on steam have DRM, others do not.
Some games check-in, others do not. The ones that dont, as far as I know, can just be burnt to a disc and reinstalled without problems.

You dont legaly rent games from Steam, its merely that under their buisness model with DRM they make the false assumption that they will exist forever under the same managment.
They do, for example, say that if they ever go down, they will perminately open up all their own games to work forever without checking in.

Theres nothing wrong with Steam specificaly, just DRM in general.

DRM is just stupid. I don't even see the point getting angry about it. You don't like it? Just use a crack.

Better to support companies that dont use it at all, imho.
Buy as direct as you can (http://positech.co.uk/ , http://www.introversion.co.uk/ , ...loads of independants sale direct online without drm) &or use hubs that only stock things without it (http://www.gog.com/ etc).

Of course, Steam is still far better then most publishers, at least you know the money is going to the developers.

I had a similar discussion with DF about that in the past, I'll pass the chance to get into it again.
