bOxOn my little puzzle game

Hey all of you !

I don't want to speak about LBA (refering to Didier's news) yet ! Things are really moving, more news soon...

I just want to present to you first, my new little game (nothing to do with LBA). It's just a puzzle game we did in our spare time with Yael. But as a lot of friends enjoy it, I decided to publish it.

The beta link is www.ludoid.fr/bOxOn/bOxOn.html

Tell me what you think...

Thank you all for your support !
Frederick Raynal

Fantastic

And don't worry, we don't need everything to be about LBA

Completed it
I like it.
Simple but very fresh gameplay, works very well.
I like the fact it shows your game in reverse at the end, and also the way to change the style - nice touchs.

Gave up on level 5 for the time being

Great little game, original gameplay and wonderful visually. I think it could do very well as an iphone game.

P.S.

I can run the game, the screen is black but the music plays. Then I get Access Violation.

@Kobold: what system ?

It's done with Blitzmax, I might try to compile it under linux (think I got a working Kubuntu on a computer somewhere...) If there is not too much system calls (like the AppData/Roaming/bOxOn directory which is created at launch)... I'll give it a try.

WOAH!
Now THIS is news.
(why isn't this in the news frontpage already!?)

Great game, fun, fast, simple, the way I like it.

Nice graphics, changing styles was fun for a fresh look (can even help you think better when you're stuck in a puzzle).

In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

Nice little game. The concept is very simple, but efficient. I'm surprised nobody thought of this before! Nice graphics too. Refreshing. I'm stuck in level 5 at the moment.

Just run it like this:

WINEPREFIX="/home/.wine_boxon" wine boxon.exe

from the directory where you've downloaded it to.

Woo, finished it! But I guess I'm pretty far from being the "high score" comparing to you guys...

Had a lot of fun. I've changed the styles many times to start fresh, after getting weary trying to solve lvl 5 (thus why it shows only 2:43 mins when actually it took about 10 mins).

A big thanks for sharing this game with us personally!

No problems running on win7.

Its gratifying making the blocks go away!

Level 5 was much harder then the others. Spend a lot of runs before I found what colour should go first. Wonder if it can be solved in other colour orders.

Good sounds.

The english translation has some tiny imperfections but thats charming.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow, I has never been so excited about a small puzzle game. Levels 1 and 2 were very easy, but 3rd got me thinking.

Of course I am not the person to talk about game design, but it could be a greater game with more complex rules: for example, "cola" cubes could flow diagonally, on the other hand, some cubes couldn't be moved or destroyed at all. There could be powerups like sugar bombs that explode tiles or candles to melt down ice, etc.

P.S. I am sure that the hand in tutorial belongs to M. Raynal.

@Odysseus: please tell me what I can do better in english version ! (text files are in "users"/AppData/Roaming/bOxOn) and if someone wants its own language, he can create a new language file, I'll incorporate it in the release...

In the full version there are 553 levels starting very easier than the first level from lite version (babies can play it and having fun), the fifth level is around level 300, meaning the 553rd level is a nightmare ! But globaly it means that you have a lot of levels for equivalent difficulty of each lite version level.

@ras_maxim: you're wrong, it's Yael's hand

That sounds good.
Are the levels hand made or generated by some sort of algorithm? I just wonder because 553 is a weird number and it seems hard to make that many by hand.

Anyway, good luck with the game, it seems fun with lots of potential. I can see this sort of game working on just about any platform too.

Well first of all: I find it charming when games have tiny weirdness in the translation. It makes me think they come from far away.

English is not my first language. But these are some small suggestions:

"Tuto0" = "Welcome to BOXON @[Tutorial] @Touch screen or click to continue when the hand taps in the corner"
"Tuto0" = "Welcome to BOXON @[Tutorial] @T
ouch the screen or click anywhere to continue "

"Tuto1" = "Pieces are moved with the finger or the mouse holding down left click button"
"Tuto1" = "Pieces are moved with the finger or by holding down the left mouse button"

"Tuto2" = "You can UNDO moves with UNDO button or mouse right click"
"Tuto2" = "You can UNDO moves with the UNDO button or simply by right-clicking"

"Tuto3" = "Same color pieces merge when joined together"
"Tuto3" = "Pieces
of the same color merge when joined together"

"Tuto4" = "Merge all same color pieces to make them disappear"
"Tuto4" = "Merge all pieces
of the same color to make them disappear"

"Tuto7" = "Voilà ! that's all. First levels are very easy, last levels are very difficult. Play as you want."
"Tuto7" = "Voilà ! that's all. The first levels are very easy, the last levels are very difficult. Play as you want."

"Tuto0
" I found most confusing. If it was up to me I would leave that bit about a tapping hand out of it since that is intuitive/apparent enough just by visuals.

Not 100% sure about these suggestions since English isn't my native. Others here might do a better job at it.
