here's a petition.

I signed, although I'm not sure if anyone out of Australia really can or should be able to say anything about their policies. On the other hand, internet is a global medium and this problem may affect us all.

Only 800 left to join the target goal. Not that petitions ever made any difference.

What is the real motive behind acts like this anyway? Do they honestly believe they're doing a good thing? If not, what are they going to achieve by this... if it will lead to dictatorship, the people who made these decisions probably won't get to be the dictators themselves. I don't get it.

its not about dictatorship
its about conservatism
and who are you to claim its not good?
good is subjective matter.
if they pass this legally, the only people who can make the change through protest are the australian people.

What could possibly be beneficial about that? It doesn't take much wisdom to understand that being forced to knuckle under an authority hovering over the internet and blacklisting sites it finds "naughty" sites isn't going to "protect" anyone.

About the "who are you" question, I'm a person with an opinion.

yes but i find it funny that many times "liberal" people are very conservative about their so-called liberal opinions. hence your "It doesn't take much wisdom to understand.." as if what you're saying is the absolute truth.

there are very good arguments for an authority hovering the internet, just like there is for one controlling your other medias, from tv to newspapers.

the funny thing is that i am too against this, but from your posts you make it sounds like its _obvious_ that your opinion is the correct one, and you wondered how can people think otherwise, questioned their motives and took this as far as dictatorship seeking.

To me it's obvious that it's correct because I think I've thought it through, but I will listen if you come up with something that undermines that.

So... what ARE their motives? Everyone has motives, I'm just clueless to what they are (hence questioning).

One can say that people would stop child abuse if they can't show their captured videos to the world, stopping child abuse.

(sorry I'm tired)

Yes it does ...

It's obvious what I mean, why wouldn't it then be considered to make sense ?

You're totaly right. Censoring the internet for a whole country is the coolest.

Those two are just playing devil's advocate. Any reason to block the internet is a bullshit reason. Nobody wants for your government to filter what you can see on the net. If anybody tells you otherwise they're either trying to disagree with you for the hell of it or they're shitting themselves.

Lets start with this - I too believe it should not be done.

BUT
YES, censoring the internet for a whole country(or the world) is NOT a madmans points of view. I wonder why it seems so crazy, just because until now it wasn't like that? It doesn't make it right.
Heck I don't see you blame hitler for censorship of the television all over the fucking world.

Again the arrogance..a bit humility and trying to understand the other side did not hurt anyone yet.

I am a great believer in freedom, and right about let me do whatever I want(not talking just about the net), even if I hurt myself its my responsibility.
But some people do not believe in this, and if they gather a majority who am I to argue?

That's what arguing is all about, you can win a crowd by blowing their minds by showing them new sophisticated ways of thinking about things.

However, arguing here doesn't make sense really, everyone seem to be hard-core-freespeechers and hard to convince because they are intelligent.

Still I agree with Bomba, both sides have their good reasons. And if Australians want it to be that way, I can say it's bad, but they think it's good, therefore their actions are justified in the spirit of democracy.

Yeah. I was mainly annoyed by talking as the side that is pro-free-net is right as a _fact_, and CF going to extreme claiming that "the people behind this seek dictatorship".

Thats all, besides that hell we agree

...censorship is good for democracy?

My solution would then be to just kill the internets as a whole cause that would realy be good for international digital communication.

lol

wow, I can't believe you actually can be so closed-minded ...

If the people wants something and it happens then it's nearly near the definition of democracy.

afaik for this case I'm not really sure if the people wanted it that way or only the government wanted to "close down" internet.

That's not really conservatism so much as it is egocentric. People like to think they're right, and anyone who doesn't believe as such must be an idiot.
