Germany Close's Down Wikipedia.de

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutz_Heilmann

Quote:
On November 13, 2008, Heilmann pressed charges against Wikimedia Deutschland e.V., causing a preliminary injunction which bars the internet address www.wikipedia.de (which is controlled by Wikimedia Deutschland) from linking to de.wikipedia.org (controlled by the U.S.-based Wikimedia Foundation) as long as certain information about him is included in the German Wikipedia in the article Lutz Heilmann.
This has got to be the most insane case of censorship in recent years O_o

Blocking the whole of wikipedia for one artical?
Its wrong enough a govement official tries to get an artical blocked, but the whole bloody website?

suddenly a third world war dosnt seem so unlikely

That happened once before already. These things usually get resolved quite quickly. It doesn't really matter as the real German Wikipedia servers are in Florida and they can't block that. If you know that you find Wikipedia at http://de.wikipedia.org and not http://www.wikipedia.de, you'll never know. Also, this guy only draw attention to the fact that he was most likely a member of the secret service of the former German Democratic Republic, while he wanted to block Wikipedia in order to prevent the public from assuming that. And this freak is a member of parliament.

What about Australia wanting to censor the internet for us?

Not mine, that was something different.
The Australia censorship is recent, and about manitory parental filtering the net.
The last simerla topic was about the US censoring cuba websites, which is pretty amazingly awfull still.
--

The horrific thing about this is that it takes just 1 German MP to get the whole of wikipedia.de closed.
Theres absolutely no freedom of speach if one person in power can block the lot so easily.
And while of course, theres ways around it, its the intention here thats scary.

Wtf! grr these things make me so angry. I want to believe these days people are smart enough to not allow these kind of things to happen. And then, this happens. Hmph.

SebZ - here's the thread about Australia.

Basically, in that discussion they're just laughing at how stupid you can be.
The page wikipedia.de apparently mentions the site they're not allowed to link to. All you need to do is copy & paste it into your address bar. It's ridiculous. This shouldn't be allowed to happen.

You guys don't get it, no one cares specifically about wikipedia.de. What's worrying is what it means for the bigger picture. If a country like Germany (modern day Germany...) lets something like this happen then there is something to worry about.

Exactly.
(allthough there probably is a million or so wikipedia.de user's pissed of right now)

But the big picture is far more scary.
You got a govement MP snapping their figures and blocking a website because it said something he didnt like.

Now now, you're getting a couple of things wrong.
1) You don't have to be a member of parliament to make that happen. The site was previously forced to go down because the parents of a dead criminal filed a lawsuit for his name being used on the site.
2) He's not a member of government, he's a member of the opposition party "Left Party", the party which once used to rule East Germany.
3) Quetch, the actual German wikipedia is in its place. Just a redirecting address was blocked.

It was the article about himself. It said he had connection to the German Democratic Republic's secret service.

So they're trying to pull us back into the dark ages, are they?

Next thing they'll start promoting is a law that demands that every user's homepage is www.truepatriotism.gov, otherwise the secret police will be knocking on your door.

Latest news: The politician wants to talk to Wikipedia admins openly on how they could make sure nothing false is stated about persons while retaining Wikipedia's "free nature". In turn he'll let them go online again.

And who desides whats false/true? Himself?

He should have followed wikipedias policy, if no accurate source is posted about a claim, you just flag it as needing a source and after awhile it will go.

No individual should have the power to take a site down just because they think "its wrong". Especialy not when its only a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the site as a whole.

No publication is ever going to be 100% accurate all the time, whether tv, books, newspapers, net or traditional enclyopedias.

To demand total accuracy or nothing, is to demand no free media at all.

Besides, this is all assuming the artical was wrong.

I'm pretty sure the Stasi stuff is 100% true, as it only says he is complaining about the university degree degree and pornography buisness.

Then germans got some fucked up laywers.
You cant denigh the usage of a name like that. You could sue for slander if inaccurate information is publisher that would damage a reputation. But even then your only likely to get a retraction unless you can proove lost earnings.

But if a judge rules the press cant use someones name just because some people dont like it, thats exactly censorship.

Their point was they wanted to block it because of this one guy complained.
The fact they are technicaly and legaly limited to how they can do so is merely lucky for us.
The US, in the same situation, can block it for a good deal more people.

seems wikipedia backed down;

Quote:
After some statements were removed from his German Wikipedia article, Heilmann announced on November 16 that he would drop the legal proceedings against Wikimedia Deutschland, regretting that many uninvolved users of the encyclopedia had been affected. He vowed to continue his pursuit of the Wikipedia editor who had originally added the offensive material.[8]
bah.
Should have held their ground on princple.
Bad precedent.
