Hi everybody !

Thank you for your suggestions, I will add the questions which have never been asked to him yet (this interview answers a lot of the questions you wrote here, but I know it has not yet been translated into English). I hope the interview will be published soon, and moreover I hope there will be a little surprise.... but it's not sure, so don't imagine too much !

Hi the MBN !

Sorry for the delay. No, the interview won't be released on LBA3 CD .
I don't know when Philippe will finish to answer to my questions, for the moment he's very busy. I hope it will be OK before the end of the year... I'm really sorry, I didn't think it could take so much time .

I keep you informed of everything about it.

Quite sad to hear that. None the less, its the way with the former Adeline team, they all seem to have a thing for delayed responses

Maybe upon finding out that he was intending to hold an interview with PV, the French Mafia 'took care of him' before he could do it and get back to us?

On a more serious note, if he's forgotten about putting the interview here then posting here isn't going to get him to remember. LFP might be taking too docile an approach to realistically expect such a busy person to reply...? Apologies for the hint of pessimism...

The answers of Philippe Vachey !

Hi my dear friends,

I'm really sorry for the delay - Mr Vachey missed time and so did I. The French mafia didn't take care about me, and I hope they will never do .

The great new of this evening is that the interview is now published (in French) at this adress : http://www.planete-aventure.net/article.php?id=79

I will translate it in English in the coming weeks, be reassured !!

To sum up the main answers :
* Mr Vachey explains that his source of inspiration for the musics of LBA and AITD was his own life (he didn't add any details).
* The LBA themes whose he is the most proud of are : LBA1 - "The Quest" / LBA1 - "LBA Theme" and LBA2 "Song of Gabriel". You have some links in the interview to hear it on YouTube.
* About all the fan work (the tools like LBArchitect, LBAnimator, the mods, etc...) he says : "it is very rewarding for us to know that fans want to add their own ideas to Twinsen's world and to give a new life to this universe".
* About LBA3, he says "I know that the LBA community want a LBA3, but currently I haven't got any news about it". He added about the cancelling of LBA3 at the end of the 90's : "We haven't been able to release LBA3 and I think that's really a pity".
* I asked him if he could send me some tracks of LBA which were cut off from the final release, or at least some different versions of the tracks like "LBA Theme" which he could have composed in his early work. He answered me "no, I don't want, but I'm working on a project of album wich could contain some remix and new versions of the tracks from LBA"... Interesting !

The whole translation will come in the next weeks - I keep you informed.

Well done LFP, this looks promising!

Google Translate coughs up the following (click here for site translate)

Name: Vachey
Age: 33 Name: Philip
Occupation: Composer
If you were:

an animal - a chamois
a plant - a cedar
an object - a box
illness - a cold
smell - that of the earth after rain in summer.
a work of art - a Kandinsky
a place - a forest of pines

Planet Adventure: Back in 2010 ...

Philippe Vachey: So 13 years later .... After this first questionnaire, very old ....

What is / are ...

The main feature of your character? Complex ....
Your favorite pastime? Conceptualize and realize
Your biggest quality? Listening
Your main fault? Idealist
What you hate above all else? Politics, lies, and lack of broad-mindedness.

Your favorite prose writers? Let's say a book that suits me: Nicolas Bouvier - "use the world"
Your favorite poets? Rimbaud / Khalil Gibran
Your favorite composers? Debussy / Stravinsky / Ravel / Bach / Arvo Part
Your favorite painters? All times surreal

The gift of nature that you would like to have? Fly
The way you want to die (!)? Wise

II - CURRENT PROJECTS

1 - Recently, you started the project in a SupInfoGame based in India. What role will you play personally?

Director of Studies, which in a project of this scale, meaning "man band" to the direction of education, manage teams and schools, provide marketing and promotion, participate in the creation of new architectural, create the network here in India, etc. ... anything to occupy my time beyond reasonable.

2 - You will participate in SupInfoGame India, and it's a good thing! But will you continue, meanwhile, to compose music for video games?

I left with a small portable studio, and I made some sketches and works for a small project for fun, in 2009, but I am rather in a phase where I "store" ideas rather than in a creative phase.

3 - You seem to enjoy particularly the countries of South Asia: You have traveled to Nepal, you have projects in India ... What have you seen or experienced in these countries, and inspired you thereafter you particularly affected?

The modes of thought and spirituality everywhere, although sometimes difficult to understand, are what concern me the most in Asia. This is obviously a source for creating music.

4 - With Pierre-François Renouf, you recently founded Audio Gamer / Phoneme. Would you talk a little bit of this project? What are its goals, its achievements?

It is a project that was shelved for the time of the mission in India. We'll talk about when it will be topical. I spent very good moments with Peter Francis, in his studio or we could develop and produce music together.

III - YOUR COMPOSITIONS, YOUR INSPIRATIONS ...

5 - Which hardware and software you work at the time of AITD and LBA?

At the time a pair of AKAI S1000 sampler and an Atari 1024, then brought the whole studio on larger configurations.

And today, for the soundtrack of Nikopol example?

In Nikopol: Nuendo and Logic [PA notes: there are two audio processing software], and an infinite mass of plug-ins sound, and then a production studio.

6 - For your first compositions on a computer in the 80s, you're you inspired by the work of electronic artists like Kraftwerk?

Not really, although Kraftwerk is essentially a pioneer group in the music "electronic" and that I like.

Maybe there are similarities in color due At the time ....

7 - Regarding especially the music LBA1 & 2, what were your inspirations?

In reality my life, and as always in these cases, I make a transfer on the production for which I work.

8 - In an interview in October 2008, you spoke of an album project that you had, bringing together a number of your compositions, sometimes unpublished. Where is this project? The music of LBA or AITD this album will appear re-orchestrated so?

Due to time again, I could move forward on this project that I really do. So it is in the cards J Yes music published and unpublished reports might include, in a sort of coherent concept ..

9 - Except for the music for video games, you've also composed music for movies or music pubs?

Pub and dressing TV: yes. Film: No, the opportunity has not yet occurred. Perhaps to Bollywood, though it is a style and a very specific market.

10 - Would there a composer of video game music that you particularly admire the work?

The man who created the music for Mario, etc ... A true creation and an invaluable contribution to the world of these games. The music leaves its mark and is playing at the same time goal achieved!

11 - Are there one or more games where you do not work, but where you think you could do something really interesting in music?

It is sometimes "audited" to work on a production, and sometimes not accepted. It is the law of its kind, then we measure what we could have compared the work of a colleague ... no comments

12 - Of all the themes of games that you have composed, there is there one you like more than others? Why?

- Walking in the Dark (AITD 1 - CD version) - I do not remove a line!

- The Quest and LBA theme (version LBA1), Song for Gabriel

- And the tracks of Nikopol

The main reason is that these tracks are (to me) results and sound like I wanted, a part for The Quest, I returned to work with and I like the intro, full of promise ...

PA Note: You can listen to some songs on YouTube:

LBA1 - The Quest

LBA1 - LBA Theme

LBA2 - Song for Gabriel (music intro)

IV - THE WORK OF FANS ...

13 - A member of Planet Adventure wanted to ask you if you would see a reason why fans realize, for the sake of fans, arrangements topics of your music for piano solo, as is done frequently for movie soundtracks ( among others). For example, an adaptation of the piano main theme LBA2 ...

The music is alive, so obviously no problem.

14 - Several big fans AML developed in all some twenty small LBA1 related programs and / or 2, for example to change the subtitles (translations), the graphics LBA1, etc.. What do you think of all these achievements? [see the "where is LBA in 2010" at the bottom of page]

I find it a pity that we could release a number 3. It is certainly very rewarding for the work we had done, know that there are fans who have the desire to bring their key, and to live this world.

V - QUESTIONS UNCLASSIFIABLE

15 - Do you have a certain nostalgia for the 80s and 90s, where the composition of music for video games had nothing to do with what it is today?

Absolutely not!

16 - Years ago, the film "Alone in the Dark" was released in the cinema, and is inspired by the whole saga "Alone in the Dark" developed in the 90s and 2000. What do you think of this film and its soundtrack?

Actually ... nothing.

17 - Have you ever played any games you composed the soundtrack, as Nikopol, Little Big Adventure, or Call of Cthulhu?

Obviously, this is a must during the production.

18 - What do you think sites like LTF Abandonware who redistribute free and without your consent the music of AML and AITD?

I think it's a good thing for the "collective memory" because the world of computer data is very volatile. However it does not help the authors to live, because the distribution is free.

VI - AND FINALLY, OF COURSE ...

19 - This interview would not be complete if I do not ask for news of the possible draft of a LBA3 ... Still nothing for the moment? Fans are still very numerous.

I know that, so far I have not the slightest radar on this.

20 - I think qu'énorme fans are the angels if you have yet unreleased versions of music games on which you worked (music / jingles ultimately not in-game versions of some unfinished music (when you were working on music AML / AITD example), etc. ...). Could you share these creations?

One day perhaps, but I do not want releaser of "demo track", so ....

21 - What are your plans for the future?

That's a good question, which alone make life a response .... For now I am at present.

To go further ...

Other interviews Philippe Vachey often complementary to it:

A comprehensive interview, tracing the musical career of Philip Vachey since the 80s: (October 2008)

Another interesting interview of Philip Vachey who also traces his musical journey Party (September 2008)

For those who want to delve into the archives, I found this interview at the time the project Agartha "was not yet abandoned (pre 2000)

Archives LBA

The two former official sites LBA2 have of course been long since removed from the web, but fortunately had advised members made backup copies before they disappear, and have since brought back online. With still some elements missing, you can still access these sites (for fans) to address this

One of the official websites containing information on members of the team Adeline Software as Proust Questionnaire. You can find this information (also very fun) at this address

What is LBA in 2010?

I think those who liked LBA would be delighted to hear of the series who was once labeled as ... Unfortunately, Adventure Planet does not speak at all LBA long ago, when important things happen next. Slight upgrade ...

When "Adeline Software" has closed its doors, some fans LBA understood that the project LBA3 "would probably remain in the boxes. A young man named Michiel Hendriks was one of the first to embark on the "backup" from the universe of MLA, since 1999. And we can now say with success.

Hendriks has launched his own fan site, which quickly became the "Magicballs Network (MBN Short - http://www.magicball.net/). The stated purpose of this site: bring the gaming community of LBA to try to carry out projects together. And it did not take long for that first results appear. In March 1999, Hendriks conducted with the approval of Frederick Raynal a set of free tools released under the name "LBADeCOMP, to decompile the files to extract LBA images, videos, textures, etc. ... and be able to read. The tool has reached its final version in late 1999, but was still very basic and very practical. Some will ask that the interest may have such a tool. The answer is simple: these are first steps and then hope to understand adequately the technical structure of the game so that fans can develop themselves the "mods": modified versions of the game!

Lacking time, Hendriks was forced to stop his research techniques and is restricted from that time to keep fit its site. They are then other members, based on the work of Hendriks, began to develop extremely sophisticated tools to "tweak" LBA1 and sometimes LBA2 (which is harder, because this second opus is technically much more developed).

From 2000 to 2005, a multitude of tools developed by fans appeared at the point where a novice these days gets lost quickly. Each tool in addressing some of the game, it was quickly possible to change the text of the game, then the text font, elements of "Holomap", etc. ... until the arrival of LBArchitect tool, to build new sets for LBA1! The specialists have now begin to create "mods" interesting ... and projects have been launched. LBArchitect progressively more complex, and can currently edit the settings, add or remove enemies on a stage, and create a whole new scenario (for programmers confirmed).

Detail the "mods" already produced and / or under development. Some are downloadable and playable all free! Do not hesitate! If you have LBA1 on your computer, you will be able to regain control Twinsen in mini-scenarios unpublished! What happiness ...

These "mods" are:

• LBA Prequel: Perhaps the most important project of "mod" has been launched it several years ago ... but is on the verge of falling water. This ambitious project initially was launched by very experienced developers, aiming to release a full game, the scenario as long and complex LBA1 or LBA2. Unfortunately, due to time and cause a tremendous work, the project can not move, and it's a safe bet he will not succeed. A demo project had been launched - no news about him.

Official Website

• The Great Rebellion: a new project without a long time. Again, this project was to create a game worthy of full LBA1 or LBA2. The project was probably abandoned. These fears are confirmed by the recent closure of the very official site of the project was at http://www.obrasilero.com/lba-tgr/.

• Lupine Island Destiny LBA: third major project to be a game worthy of full LBA1 or LBA2, but this time, things are progressing! In September 2009 came a great demo, you can (and should) download and try if you have LBA1. To run the demo, you'll need to replace some files behind LBA1 by those of the "mod" so remember to save them to then be able to replay LBA1 normally. To start the demo, and other mods below: select "new game".

Download the demo

A video demo on YouTube (not to play after having tested the demo for yourself!)

• "Vindish mod" In a smaller target, a user Magicballs Network using the nickname "Vindish" (part of the team Lupine Island Destiny LBA) has created this "mod" short but very enjoyable. Works perfectly!

Some information about this mod

Download

• "Desert Base": If I am not mistaken, this is the first "mod" done to LBA1. Very well done, there is even the possibility to choose a level of difficulty launching the game This mini-game takes place in the Desert Leaf White.

Download

Video of the mod on YouTube (not to play after having tested the mod for yourself, of course).

• "Sewerage" A "mod" the same author as "Desert Base. Mod A short but really respecting the universe Twinsen.

This is fabulous!
I don't have words to express how awesome this is!
But; is the google translation really close to the original? anyone can tell?...

---

To the Admins and fellow MBN Members: People, I think we should have a place in MBN where we can find all articles, interviews and press/fan material (such as this, and that other previous interview with him, etc) in one place, all properly translated to english by a human (not to loose any of the original information and it's full "flavour") and properly organised, with info's about who's being interviewed, when it happened, where (if possible), and who's the interviewer.

I think this would be really important, and would add for the MBN communnity to be a reference of such material. Maybe there is a section for that I don't know of but, for me it seems like these important and precious stuff are all spread out into mere threads.

Personally I would love that.

In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.
