Well, I am still as excited about the possibility of LBA3 as I ever was, and it seems more possible now (with the relatively recently re-releases of the first two, the rise of indie-games, new distribution models, the popularity of certain 'quirky' recent mainstream titles etc) than it was a good few years ago. I am being optimistic, but can obviously understand the pessimism.

Sounds interesting...
The website says he teamed-up with some other "veterans", Yael Barroz, Thierry Platon and Sophie-Anne Bled. They call themselves "videogame band", Fred says humorously that it sounds better, internationally speaking.
About the game, Raynal says "It's already frightening. And these are only voxels.", and Thierry adds : "Let's say we are working on Frederick Raynal's second survival horror !".

They seem quite motivated, and seems like Agartha got sweeped under the carpet

The famous Red Alert (Command n Conquer) series also uses voxels. I never really understood what they are, are you sure they're bad?

They are pixels in 3D, basically just coloured cubes.

Indeed.
I joke - I love voxels.
You can see Minecraft as a voxel system, although thats still rendered as polygons rather then "true" voxels.

The advantage of voxels is everything is normally "solid" rather then polygons which are just skin. This makes it easy to make games where you can dig or destroy things.

In Red Alerts case though they just used them to get vehicles from lots of angles at a time when polygons would be too low res.

Unfortunately voxel tech has lagged behind polygon tech as hardly anything is developed with it - and all GPUs are focused around accelerating polygons.

Anyway, this blog has a lot about them;
http://procworld.blogspot.nl

Specificly the guys work on an engine being used for the Next EverQuest game.

That's very interesting... So far I only heard of voxels as a replacement for old game sprites, like the items you pick up in Doom.

I'm with you, crowd-sourcing and the success of indie titles has proven audience demand for inventive mechanics, and entire genres (like adventure) which many marketing people had written off years ago.

It's fertile ground for a new LBA game, though ultimately it will come down to sales figures of the mobile releases. But I can't help being optimistic too. Fred's energy is contagious.

Its just too bad this forums activity has died down - we really did a great job promoting LBA a few years back but haven't really done anything for the actual mobile releases.

I just tried GoG a few days ago, to contribute to the game sell rate etc, but I could not finish an order.

GoG and DotEmu too I believe, don't offer a payment method I can use. I can only pay with iDEAL currently. I know it's basically only used in the Netherlands, but it's so easy and comfortable to use.

Only Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 used voxels. The previous games used sprites and the later games use polygon graphics.

Technically, that means I wasn't wrong.
Sprites are awesome, I use them too. It's obvious I think, to first start a game(series) using sprites and then later upgrade to better graphical presentations. You can do a lot with them, but they're very limited if you want more dimensions. Because LBA has always been a 3D game series (or fake 3D called isometric), they used sprites for only some aspects of the game and shape models for the main stuff.

Actually, the magic ball and every projectile are sprites. But it's more of a technical limitation.

Omg, pixelated Fred, haha.
It reminds me of Minecraft. You could actually build this in Minecraft, with some colour approximations

Thats utterly awesome.
Looks really good when small too;

Interestingly they will use pure voxel animations - thats very unusual.

Classic voxel game: Outcast. Came out when everyone was going for polygons.

In fact, with today's colour at our disposal, I think you could probably build it with the almost exactly colour tones

You're probably using 1.8, aren't you? I can see colours I haven't seen yet myself. Or you could use a texture pack, problem solved.
