LBA1 patrol robot remake

I'm trying to make new version of the LBA1 patrol robot. Still a little bit in the concept phase, so any input is highly appreciated - I also want it to serve as a portfolio piece.
It's not fully up to standard as much as I would like. When it is, maybe Jasiek would have it in his LBA remake?

Original patrol robot:

Current status (mesh + overpaint)

That's an awesome work, good job
As xesf said, I think you should increase the size of the cannons, it would surely look better. Also, why don't you draw the projectiles aswell?

That's awesome! =D Looking great!

Input, hmm...
So, the patrol robot senses movement. Its "eyes" go up and down and turn in every direction. From the games, I got the impression that the "eyes" sensed movement, and they also seem to be the cannons.

In the new design, I could see it performing the same movements, but at first glance it doesn't seem to be designed with the intent of doing that. Are the antennas meant for the motion sense, or maybe for a remote control? (I guess it would be difficult to turn off or realocate such a robot without remote control...)
Also the "eyes" looke like they perform well the job of headlights, and maybe motion sensors, but cannons, I'm not so sure.

Anyway, it looks pretty nice! It really like it would move along the floor in the way it does on the game, the "FF34" is also a nice touch.

I think the size of the cannons is ok. maybe make them a little shorter and thicker (just maybe)

Guys great suggestions and I agree with all of them.
I added the "eyelids" -- this is really something that brings out a bit of character. Also, the cannons themselves were a bit too low-tech and felt too basic. I made them shorter, thicker, and added more techy details. Oh and I wore him down a bit more as I'm sure he's been on the road for some time.
The idea is that the eyes are some kind of holographic light bars, that can intentionally "overload" when the robot is in combat. The released bursts of energy will be the projectiles you see when he's firing. Does that make sense?

That looks so nice !
The design of the cannon now makes it clear that it's a weapon aswell. The eyelids are illogically positioned on it though, I mean, when it fires, does the slimmer part go into the thicker part ? You know, because of the force of the gun pushing back.
If yes, those eyelid holder are going to get broken off...
(Do you get what I mean, or am I being too chaotic again ?)

Funfrock

I agree, the new cannon design does make it look more like a weapon! About wearing him down, well... I remembered this announcement in Loupin-Burg:

"ANNOUNCEMENT #357-G: A new automatic surveillance device is now operating in the city. All citizens must remain motionless if one of these devices is in their vicinity."

So I think it was supposed to be new. We don't really have an idea when this announcement was made, though, so it could be old... But it does seem Funfrock has been making a lot of announcements, and newer ones replace old ones.

Thanks guys!
The thinner part of the cannon wasn't designed to be pushed in to the thicker part when firing. Instead I'm thinking that those eyelids could rotate to a standing position to be at a safe distance from the blast. As a bonus this will make him look especially menacing I think, as the eyes would visually appear to be wide open just before the blast.

About the state of it being damaged: I totally forgot about that notification! Fair point. Maybe I'll tone it down a bit again and settle for a couple of months of intense use. The behavior of this robot was intentionally designed to be maintaining a ridiculous state of order (people have to stand completely still) so I can imagine it to have been going off at unsuspecting bystanders a lot of times.

I might pick up the next iteration somewhere next weekend, I'll keep you guys posted.

More than a year later (!) I'm picking this up again... Just did the first unwrapping and coloring/materials pass. Pretty much no texturing done yet. Want to go all the way with this guy and make a proper normal map as well. Currently at ~3,5k triangles.

Weel, looks real cool, even better then the previous one (which was already amazing), but the resolution on the edges is still kinda bad...

That'll probably fix itself later, it's because there's no anti-aliasing in my Maya viewport (which these are screengrabs from). Thanks anyways

Some first detailing steps... I'm still looking for the direction I want to go in. Don't want it to be too "low tech" but it shouldn't be too cool and sci-fi either.

I really like it look but I would personally work on unifying details density. Right now the cannons and green front panel is really shiny and look like really new. In the same time yellow parts and green side panels look like really worn out.

Because of this illusion is broken and you get feeling that something is not right.

This project has been on my mind ever since my previous update. I guess my longest taking project ever.. but I want to pick this up again somewhere soon. Hoping to take it even further in terms of detailing

Wait, am I seriously still working on this? Yep!

- Changed center bit. Looks a bit sleeker now.
- Some (re)working of the paneling
- General detailing

Video update

Worked on the logic behind the movement of the robot.
