How To Get On #lba!

Here is my guide on how to go about getting onto #lba, the forum chatroom, for all you people out there who find Internet Relay Chat totally alien.

Firstly, an explaination of a few terms:
IRC : An international computer network of Internet servers, using its own protocol through which individual users can hold real-time online conversations.
mIRC : A client used to access the IRC network. It is highly configurable, and has a great User Interface, which will help you get the most out of your IRC experience. It is also the client which I shall be using in my guide.

Okay, first things first. Get your copy of mIRC here. Install it, and run mIRC.exe. It may be wise to stick a shortcut in the Quick Launch bar, or the Desktop. Your call.

Right, the first thing you'll see when you run mIRC is this:


Fill in your Name, Email and then put in a Nickname (just use your MBN username) and Alternative nickname (this will be used if your primary nickname is being used. Just add a "-" or something to the end of your primary nickname.) Upon completion, click the button I have circled in red.

This window should then come up:


Here you want to select EFnet in the IRC Network box. As for IRC Server, I'd recommend either of the two servers at the top of my list. They are the most reliable in my opinion. After selection, click Ok.

Then, click the button circled in red:


This will bring up this screen:


In the mIRC Favourites box, click on Add, and the Add Channel box comes up. Fill it in as I have, and tick Join on connect. Then click Ok and Ok again.

Next, click the circled button:


This is the Connect button, and from now on that's all you'll need to click, as your settings are saved.

Hopefully, if it has worked, after connection, you should see something like this:


That should be you set. See you there. Any problems? Post here, we'll try sorting you out.

you could get 2552irc.. it's simple to use..

just put in your name, in the password box under the list of AREAs put in "other" (without quotes) and then click on the LBA area. then press connect

For users of Firefox (and I guess Mozilla) the Chatzilla IRC program is available at https://update.mozilla.org/extension...&category=Chat

* Once you have installed it simply select Chatzilla from the tools menu. A window will appear with 3 panals and Some text will appear in the top right one.

* Find the Efnet hyperlink in top right panal and click that (a new tab opens) followed by loads of text

* If this is your first use, enter a nickname

* In the small panal to the bottom enter the following text

/join #lba

* Press enter and you will be connected to the #lba channel.

* In the top left pane there is now a list of active users. To chat - type in the small bottom pane and press enter to send.

* EASY PEASY

NBS-irc is a script for mIRC.
I agree it's a nice script, though.

Check the following url for a complete list of efnet servers. Use it to find a nice and stable server in or nearby your country (don't try connecting to HUB servers).

Some information useful for first comers:

* Don't join, say hello, wait for 2 minutes and then leave. DON'T DO THAT, PLEASE. Realize that people don't sit in front of IRC all day, they may go out to get food and go to the bathroom sometimes. Maybe you were going to have a really nice conversation but you didn't because you weren't patient enough for erm, 2 minutes and 1 second.

* The people opped (with '@' in front of their nicks) with nicks beginning with a "_" or "|" (example: _Kaiousei, |Joop are bots. They're programs, they can't speak to you.

* As StarmanDX said, text-talk isn't seem as a good thing but if you can't help it...

* #LBA is not the MBN; don't complain about the IRC channel in here and vice-versa. Well, maybe not vice-versa.

* There're many internal jokes and references to obscure happenings and things, websites, etc. Don't worry if you don't understand things very well in the beginning, you'll get the handle of it with time.

* if you're interested in asian pornography, talk to wacko: he has a respectful archive and a fast connection.

That's pretty crap for everyday use. No DCC, you can't configure it, and you can't really do any of the extra stuff a "proper" client can do. Good if you're at someone's house or on another PC/school or whatever though.
