Warcraft III

Well, I finally got the beta version... Lotsa sites are offering to download it, in case you didn't know... I guess some of you may already have it by now. Anyway, the game REALLY rules. The graphics is amazing, and though I'm still having a hard time getting used to the game itself, what I've seen so far is truely amazing. This game is gonna rule.

I saw the leaked (illegal) beta version available for download some weeks ago, but I didn't download it as I'm not really in for beta's...

I've seen some screenshots of it, and it look excellent indeed. Not that I'm such a big strategy fan, but I'm curious to the final product.

I heard the game was going to be great, but I don't think I'll bother downloading it if I need to spend more than half a day waiting

I hope it's a legal beta because I get sick of those illigal one's. Don't download them, it only causes trouble for those who created it

Did you actually know that they were thinking of chanceling Unreal 2 because of a Beta-leak?

I can understand you can't wait to see it all, but please do considder the fact that because of these things, many game development teams get into trouble

I agree 100% with you.
But why would they think about canceling Unreal 2 because of a beta?

I think canceling a game cause of a beta leak may be a bit much, really...
And, well, I plan to buy the game once it's realeased anyway... I don't feel too sorry for Blizzard, those guyz get their money anyway. I just get the game a bit earlier.

Do you realize those guyz actually charged the testers 300$ for the beta version?
I mean, these people DO get to see the game first - but comon, it's still a job! They have to sit and play the game for like a month, and Blizzard have the nerves to CHARGE them 300$ for it... I think this is outragous, most, no wait, ALL computer companies have beta testers of their own, who GET money for searching for bugs. Blizzard just took advantage of the fact there are some comp freaks who couldn't wait to get the game, and decided to make some money (1.5M$, to be exact - 5000 testers - usually there are around 10-20) out of it...
I think this sux.
Though it has nothing to do with the fact I downlaoded the beta, I downlaoded the beta cause I AM gonna buy the game eventually, so I think the fact I stole the beta from them makes up for the fact I'm actually gonna pay 60$ for this game (outragous price too).

Charging for the beta is out of order, but theres nothing wrong with charging $60 for a game.
When you get W3, look at the credits, I bet there will be a team of 50 or so people. (probably more)
Multiply this by developmeant time, then multiply by the average wage for the workers on the game.
Add the cost of any software liesense's they use (Compression techonolgies,Music ect ).
Add the cost of any harddware/software used to develope the game (Biggest cost would be for CGI use, but they might get an external studio to do it~in which case add there costs).
Add the costs for physical production, shipping, and distrubution.(also translation costs if exporting)
--
ect.ect
It adds up, profit margins arn't as high as people think. (the rental end takes too much of a share, but production dosn't really)

Look, if people realyl payed for every software they get (taht includes the tens of softwares you got on your computer and don't really pay attention to, like Winzip or Winamp) - they'd go bankropt. I try to buy a game once in a while, just like I buy music cd's once in a while, but if I wanted to get every game that came out in the last summer, for example, in a LEGAL way, I'd have to pay thousands of dollars. So yea, I burn cd's. Those companies may get a little hurt by it, but trust me, they GET their money. They got their stocks, they got all their Trademark productions and T-Shirt and side-projects and all that stuff, I don't believe these guyz got ANY kind of money problem. That's why I DO think charging 60$ for a computer game is way too much, even if it IS worth what they're spending on. There's a difference between what a big fat company like Blizzard can afford, and what poor lil' Evil-Twinsen can afford!
Nevertheless, the moment I'll hear Blizzard or any other company (or band, for that matter) is gonna go bankrupt cause of illegal copies - I assure you I'm gonna buy their game\album, and not burn it. As I said, I'm GONNA buy WC3 either way, and from what I've heard from a lotta people - they're gonna buy it too, even though they can burn it illegally. When a game realyl is THAt good, people will wanna buy it (just like I did with LBA1 and LBA2).

------------------------------------------
Lightwing - Try this ftp, worked for me and a lotta guyz. If it asks for a password, the password is "me". If it doesn't work, try restarting your computer and entering again, or pressing "OK" without entering a password. It should work eventually.[/PHP]

Evil-Twinsen- The games are that expensive BECAUSE people buying the legit versions are subsidising all the people getting copies.
Your really think Blizzard make money from
If people paid for all the software on there PC, the software on their PC would be much cheaper.
People wouldn't go bankrupt, at all.
They would simply make wiser purchase's, rather then downloading stuff at near-random.
There's 100% free alternatives to both WinAmp and WinZip.
Many of which have superior features.

Quote:

Honestly?
Do you really think that pays for anything.
Stocks have got nothing to do with it.
Side products might make a little bit of cash, but there main purpose is to promote the game.
Most companies lose money on promotional stuff, because it acts as advertising.
-
If you download a game to test whether it works, or as a "demo" then its fine.
Its also fine if its a game/software that you would never/could never buy legitimately.
(Theres no way I'll be able to buy a legit copy of 3DS Max or MAYA,so I don't feel bad about using it for non-profit stuff)
-
But if you download a game to play then that's just theft, and the company just reflect their lose of money straight back at the consumers.

Also, just another question, did those beta testers GIVE 300$ for beta testing, or did Blizzard WANT 300$ for beta testing?

You see, I can imagen there were beta testers who wanted to play that game really badly that they tried to contact blizzard for a job

also, what's 300$ per person for such a big company?

Well that's what I hear everywhere...

Atresica - to your question - I dunno who suggested the 300$, but it doesn't matter, I don't think Blizzard should've done it like that... And of course it's a lot of money... It comes down to 1,500,000$.... That's a LOT...

Anyway, as I said - I plan to buy this game eventually either way. I don't think they're gonna lose any kind of money on me, anyhow.

Besides - EVERY game has been burned into million copies all aroudn the world, and still, companies make money. Obviously, the fact people burn the cd's hurt the guyz who buy the cd's cause they have to pay a lot more - but there's nothing to do about it. If someone told me EVERYONE will stop pirating, and the prices will come back to normal, I'll stop pirating (well maybe a burned cd once in a while...). But that's not gonna happen, and me stopping pirating ain't gonna stop that, only gonna make me pay much more.

W3 is preatty good, but I still think Battle Realms is better. So, if I'm gonna spend my money on an RTS sometime this year, I'm getting Battle Realms.

that means that there were 5000 beta testers.....sounds a bit unrealistic

No, no, no, no, no, no, a thousand times no, and I really resent that attitude. I'm the FIRST guy to go for changes and stuff like that, and the moment a movement like that will start, I'll fully support it. If I had the time, I'd do it myself. As long as it doesn't happen (and it will happen, I'm sure of it), yea, I'm saving my neck. And I REALLY resent that attitude cause you made me sound terrible, without understanding what I meant.
