Inquiry: Program Installation Quick Question

Just wondering - I seem to have lost one of my setup discs that contains some software on my PC that I'd liek to keep. I'm planning on reformatting, and I was wondering if I could *save* the files for the program off of my PC, and then re-install it without the CD after the clean Windows install?

You mean the registry files that were created/maintained by the program while installed? Or are you OK with just downloading an iso and install it without the discs after reformatting?

What I'd like to do is take all the programs folders and such and, if possible, just copy them over back into the Program Files directory once I reinstall Windows.

Schitzn I think is expert on these kind of things I think, unfortunately he is inactive nowadays.

Unfortunately I don't know how to do it smoothly.

I guess if you backup the related programs from Program Files, the related files from Common Files, and the Registry, you should be able to restore it later. But I might be missing something.

A name of the application would help a bit.

I'd advise searching in local machine > software in the registry, and export the application's stuff.

I think what Double-J means is that he wants several of his installed applications to be fully restored even after a reinstall of the OS. Not just a single one, right?

If you have already bought a copy it should be possible, in a legal sense. Or, is it not? It would be the same thing as backing it up.

I suppose you're right, but I am not too familiar with the vast network of places to find such a thing.

Actually, an ideal would be the .iso of the missing disc.

Tell us what it is and maybe someone could make a step by step tutorial just for you. Or maybe even someone here has the same software.

It's a CD/DVD recorder thing? You will most likely need to find an installer/iso then - because these types of software generally tend to muck around with drivers and other drive settings.

7.0 is on TPB...

Yes, it's CD/DVD burning software. TBQH, the only reason I want to keep it is because it has a very nice interface for erasing CD and DVD-RW's.

Sorry to be ignorant, but what is "TPB" ?

Torrent is a system where users share parts of files to each other.

Normal downloads from the internet are that you start from the beginning to the file to the end. You download files rawly.

Torrents are not like that at all, one guy start to seed, he has the complete file, then other lechers download from him, they all download different parts, so when the seeder (only one which got whole file) disconnects, the other lechers will still be able to download the full file from each other.

What you need:

Client, I know µtorrent is free and very light, and easy to use too!, however it's not open source.

Then when you installed/downloaded µtorrent, it will associate .torrent files to itself, so then you can go to a torrent site (such as TPB, or mininova) and download .torrent files.

Rest is self explanatory.

Some stuff you should consider:

- If you're behind a firewall/router, open up or forward the respective port of your client to your computer. You can set the port to use in the client. It will work without this step, but you will mostly upload and get really bad download speeds.

- Set your bittorrent client's upload speed to 50% or at most something like 75% of your total upload bandwidth. For example, if you have a 512 kbps upload rating, set your client to upload at 32 kB/s. More upload bandwidth will grant you faster download speeds, but too much uploading will seriously choke your connection (unless you have some fancy QoS going on).

- Use PeerGuardian 2, especially if you're in the USA. Anti-piracy groups are a serious threat and this offers a minimal protection against those. Also enable protocol encryption if your client supports it.

- µTorrent is seriously the best bittorrent client ever.
