Convert .mov to .avi

Anyone know of a decent (free) program to convert quicktime files into something I can use (.avi, .wmv, etc.)?

Also, I've heard about the Quicktime Alternative...any good?

Hmmm, maybe camtasia can do it? Or Virtualdub mod + some .mov codec.

Funny, I had the same problem myself just yesterday, when trying to help my sister adding a video to a PowerPoint presentation. I didn't find a proper solution though.

Maybe this is of any help. Google is great in searching up converters. (mp3towav, srt to sub, mov to avi, etc.)

edit: And from my own experience --> WinAvi.

Is there a difference between srt and sub (and any other subtitles file type, in that case)?

Oh yeah there sure is. It's about how to display the rules and timing. I believe .srt does it in a

I had to do this once.
You can do it with QuickTime Pro, and there's one other program I know of that can do it, only the shareware version will put a watermark on the .avi.
Both solutions aren't free, so I can't really recommend either of them.

I'd say: warez your way out of it. You know what you doing.

Quicktime Alternative is excellent, but you can only use it for video playback as far as I know. Allows you to watch .mov files in for example Media Player Classic.

.sub is usually used for vobsubs, where .srt is text-based. So I guess there's another text-based subtitle format that also uses the .sub extension then.

Total Video Converter is a good example, and it does many formats (also .flv, for all you Internet crap leechers).

I use VirtualDub.
It'll do Mov, Mpeg, Avi and Wmv to an Avi with any codec that you specify!

As far as I know VirtualDub only really does .avi, with some support for mpeg-1. WMV support has been unavailable for a long while under pressure from Microsoft, and it has never supported .mov I think.

Other than that, VirtualDub is really an excellent tool and I'd recommend it anytime, was it not useless for this thread's purpose.

There is a conversion/batch processing function built right into the program? If so, that would be excellent.

Umm...not only won't Bink play any of my .mov, it won't convert them either. It says it can't open the files. What's up with that?
