Power..Power..I have power!

Solar, that is;

Just got them installed.
That meter is how much is going into the grid.
So thats 493 despite currently in use; 2 PC's in active use, 1 fridge, 1 LIFX lightbulb and a few things (wii, notebook on standby).
Pretty chuffed really - its not even sunny

Also, its another step towards being apocalypse proof. People can charge their games consoles at my house in exchange for food.

best apocalypse market system ever

It looks nice. Is it charging a big battery or do you have to use the solar power instantly ?

Totally awesome (as usual, when it comes to darkflame's geeky gadgets. ).

Pardon to ask such a mundane question - considering there could be many other far more interesting questions out there about it - however, how much did it cost?

PS: Hello all again! Hope MBN is still okay.

sgk: Think of it this way: it's like a message in a bottle. In our world, we put a message inside a bottle to protect it while it travels through the oceans to reach some other island. In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

We have no battery, but the grid buys the energy from us at the same rate they charge us, so effectively they act as a battery. Whatever I dont use during the day, I get for free at night.

Our setup cost just under 5000 euros for 12 panels (Yingle 255wp).
That also includes the cost of the installation, and the invertor (which converts the DC energy from the panels into your houses AC supply)

The upfront price is pretty expensive, but they are warrantied to give 80% or more power for 25 years. (much like batteries, they get less good over time)
At current energy prices, they should pay for themselves in 8 years and from then on its all profit.

Tis ok, but not very active.
New people pop up still, which is pretty cool.

That's realy nice! It would realy come in hand in my country/state, since the energy bill costs so much

What happened for you to decide to install them? Were you planning on doing it since long ago?

Yes, but on average theres enough still sunlight to take off, say, 1/3rd of our total energy bill each year.

If you store energy for a whole day, on summer, how long does it last? (eficiency)

We do not store it ourselves, we sale our excess to the grid at the same cost we buy it back.
Beyond that I cant say much about how much we get vs use as we have only had it a few days!

Will do.
Theres supposed to be ways to graph the data from the panels, as it can connect to our wifi network.
Haven't figured out quite how that works though.

Interesting model of electrical supply. Does this means, if more people joins the grid the buy/sell price will become cheaper?

Upto a point.
The company sales green energy, that is, not generated from fossil fuels. They sale this to anyone that wants to buy it. Therefor the more people that generate extra power and sale it to them (like me) the more they can sale onto others who dont generate their own.
However, if everyone in the country generated their own, obviously they wouldn't have anyone left to buy it. No one would need the extra solar energy being generated during the day - but still the same number of people will need to buy energy at night.
So unless good storage is invented, the cost would go up again. And even with storage it wouldnt be a free 1:1 ratio like it is now, as theres going to be maintance/upkeep costs. Using the spare electrical generation straight away is a lot easier.

Some speculate that it doesn't mater - that by the time theres that many people generating with solar panels we will be using electric cars anyway. Electric cars have big batteries, and the idea is those batteries can act as the store of power.
Collectively our cars would store the extra power during the day, and pay it back into the grid at night when we need it.

Ah, (almost) free energy. My dad tried to do that in various non-standard ways for years (he tried to invent perpetual motion machine). Thought about solar panels, but those are too expensive currently for us. And we can't use the grid buffering, because in Poland, you can't simply produce your own energy and sell the extra to the grid. You have to sell everything to the grid at lower price, and buy the part you need back at higher price.

Arg, that sucks if you dont get 1:1 ratio.
Even without any buy-back from the Grid the panels we got would pay for themselves, but it would take a lot longer (2-3 times as long).
You'd also have to spend more time thinking about your power usage. We don't have to worry, but if it was "free during the day, pay at night" we sure as hell would put everything we have on charge only during the day

As for your Dad, perhaps he should switch to looking at cheap energy storage methods.
Might be easier for an amateur to achieve something useful.
