Fallout 3

I know it wasn't developed by Black Isle and so many hardcore Fallout fans have denounced it completely, but I'm actually really enjoying Bethesda's Fallout 3. In spite of the slightly lousy voice acting (though it's no worse than most other games) and the so-so script, the world is richly detailed and it looks beautifully ugly, the atmosphere is potent, the enemies are varied, and it's got an unparalleled sense of freedom with surprises round every corner. And bloody hell, it's addictive, which isn't helpful on the final year of a uni course.

This is hard to explain, and it'll sound like a criticism, but I like how dated and sort of unforgiving the game can be. Wandering around the dingy sewers and metro systems and getting lost brought back nice memories of playing Ultima Underworld. I've realized that the reason I haven't enjoyed many recent shooters, RPGs, and adventure titles is because I've felt too lead by the hand and they've basically been too easy. It's a trend I've noticed in many new games, and I don't really like it, though I see why many people prefer knowing where to go and experiencing a tight bunch of set-pieces to wandering aimlessly around. Me - I love it. I love being overwealmed and feeling a bit lost from time to time. I love finding lots of seemingly "pointless" rooms and I love the fact that much of the Wasteland, though not boring, isn't essential either.

It's a thing that has damaged the new Zelda games in particular for me, especially TP. I much prefer the approach of Zelda: LttP on the SNES. What kind of adventure is an adventure game if you can't ever really get lost and you know exactly what you're meant to be doing at every moment?

Oh, and hi everyone. Good to see you again. I'd also recommend you all play Little Big Planet. It's an amazing, charming game.

I love Fallout 3 so fucking much. It's not developed by Black Isle, but Bethesda really did an amazing job on it (which is a lot more than I expected from them after Oblivion's lameness).

This comment will probably enrage some people, but Fallout 3 is the best Fallout yet. (That is, after applying a number of much needed user-made patches from Fallout 3 Nexus - clickity clickity click click click click - and playing the game on the hard or very hard setting)

The voice acting might be *slightly* lousy, but really only slightly.

The severe-humoristic opti-pessimistic retro-futuristic theme is just brilliantly done.

Basically I'm with CS2x. If you haven't played it because it's Bethesda, snap out of it and get this game now.

I utterly loved it. Aside from a single fuck up at the end, where I had a huge radiation immune friend who could've given me a hand! A total fuck up that was.

Wow, I actually just wanted to make a topic.

This game has convinced me to actually upgrade my 1998 computer.
I now have a 3.2Ghz quadcore, 4GB, and been playing this game ever since I got my new PC 4 days ago.
It's very addictive and the storyline is SUPERB. The science-fiction'60/70' idea is great (That's why I love Lost) and post-apocalism is great as well.

edit: ergo, one of the best games of the last 10 years, imo.

Yeah, I sold Fable II once I got into Fallout 3. It was very charming and very British, so I feel a bit bad for getting rid of it, but it was just too easy and buggy. Fallout 3 feels much meatier.

I was thinking of getting it for the PS3, but I don't have time to play a long RPG. Maybe when the price drops I'll snag a copy. Same goes for Far Cry 2.

Don't! Get it for PC. From what I've read people say, it plays best on PC. Also, you can't apply patches on the PS3 version.

Xbox 360 and PC are getting downloadable content.

Although the main quest is a tad short and ended quite abrubtly, the rest of the game is immense and a lot of fun to explore. I have around 45 hours on my latest savegame now and I see myself playing it for quite a few more hours still. I've been playing as a 'good' character, I might replay it as a 'bad' one.

I was kind of disappointed when I found out I was at the max level when reaching level 20, there were still a number of skills I wanted to raise and perks to unlock! Oh well, all the more reason to start it over again I guess. I feel especially bad about not having lockpick at 100 because even though I'm still pretty high in that aspect, some doors will forever remain shut to me.

I don't like the DC area a lot; it's hard and tedious to navigate through, but I guess that has its charm as well. Good thing fast travel is available so theoretically you'll only have to go through everything once.

I'd rather not, I'm not much of a PC gamer these days. You can patch PS3 games too, although I'm not sure if Bethesda has some DLC deal with Microsoft for exclusivity?

I think CF means unofficial patches, I doubt you can pull those off easily on a console. I don't use any of them though.

I'm quite happy with the keyboard+mouse controls on a PC, I wouldn't be able to adapt super easily to a gamepad. But it seems alright I guess.

I know Unreal Tournament 3 allowed for user-created mods on the PS3, I wish more developers would allow them, given the fact that the consoles (with the exception of the Wii) have the drive space to work on these things.

just a question, do you guys play in 3rd person or 1st person?
3rd person looks kinda lame to me in this game, aiming isn't perfect and most animations are stupid... and the camera is pretty weird.
I only use 3rd person when going around cities in which i don't have troubles with anyone (and that's pretty rare haha!)
My character... I'm a level 14 neutral man
I did many bad things in the past only to have Jericho on my side, then I started to do a lot of useful stuff and became a good guy...
So I realized being that good wasn't my style and i started murdering and stealing again!

I play first person. Third person only rarely when strolling around a friendly area or when making screenshots

I'm extremely good, except I pickpocket / steal from friendlies. But that's very little negative karma.

I wouldn't know where to start when describing how fucking awesome fallout3 is. It's just so....fucking awesome. Comes closer than most games to being perfect if you ask me.

Does anyone else find the level 20 cap (or the rate at which you can reach it) a bit disappointing? I probably shouldn't have taken that swift learner perk...

It is a bit frustrating, but then again the enemies wouldn't have remained challenging for very long if you could go higher than that.
Ofcourse they could've made it so enemies level up as well..

I just woke up with the following fact: It's very Lost-ish and very LBA-ish.

Lost&Fallout:
  • Project made in '60/'70
  • Involving human experimenting in Vaults/Hatches
  • Still some experiments running although many of them failed.
  • Themes like drugs-addiction
  • Once you leave you can't go back (Vault101)

LBA&Fallout:
  • Dictator with clones (well, something like that)
  • Scientists/Wizards are captured into the dictators HQ
  • ....which is hidden in a mountain/statue.
  • ..which has some kind of cloning shit going on/teleport like objects
  • and when you leave the HQ it pretty much blows up with a big boom.

I just use the "slower leveling" mod from Fallout 3 Nexus + hard difficulty settings, I'm quite far in the game and still on level 8.

Will it run in a compy with 512 MB Ram and the Intel GMA 3000 graphics? xD

I'm really interested but I think my PC is out of the league for that.
