Twinsen LBA1 patch updated

The new version includes several bug fixes and enhancements:
  • LBA should no longer crash after videos/zooms or in certain places (shop on Principial Island).
  • GeForce 2 cards will display videos correctly.
  • Volume controls are now usable on fast computers.
  • Patch selects sound settings automatically. Most users shouldn't need to run LBA setup for this.
  • Utilities to enable/disable videos and scenery zoom are included.
Updated 18 Oct 2001:
  • LBA will now find its CD if you use Windows NT, 2000 or XP, or have multiple CD drives.
  • You can make Twinsen a bit less vulnerable by running WALLHIT.BAT.
I want to thank everyone who tried the previous versions, particularly Lightwing for his help with the CD version of LBA, and Wacko, for testing in Windows XP.

To install this patch, download the attached .ZIP file, extract it to your LBA directory and run PATCH.EXE. It will create a new patched executable, LBAWIN.EXE, that should run in Windows.

There may be more bugs, so testers are welcome. When you report problems, please mention your Windows version, LBA version (European/US, CD/floppy/demo/CD rip), name of your sound card and video card, and any other appropriate information such as Windows error messages.

LBA patch source available

You will need Turbo Pascal 7 to compile it. If (when) you find bugs, email me.

just took a look through the bugs you found, and Doh.. pretty obvious...
Btw, what debugger/de-asm for DOS do you use ? Maybe I can help (my asm isn't that great, but every bit helps)

Ok, patch works pretty good on my system. But there's one very annoying thing.

I have 2 CD-Rom drives (IDE CD-Rom and a SCSI CD-Writer), LBA uses the SCSI CD-Writer as CD source. This is very anoying since it's not hooked up with redbook audio sound. So I can't hear the CD music.

Another thing, it could just be me, but LBA is a bit slow, fire should be a bit faster, but also the game.

[wrong] LBA uses the first CD drive it founds. [/wrong] Try swapping CD drive letters from Device Manager.

Edit: LBA tries to search all CD drives but fails due to a bug (that is now fixed).

Hmm, I slowed the "fire" in menus, but this shouldn't slow the game itself, I think...

About the tools I used:

I used Hiew and QView for disassembling and editing. I couldn't find a powerful debugger that is easy to understand and doesn't crash everything. I utilized the simple debugger from WDOSX package for some tasks.

Well that's the problem, SCSI has higher priority then secondary IDE, so I can't switch them around, windows won't let me...

I think the fire should be a little faster...

FunnyFrog, you forgot to mention the number one big thing we had to deal with. And that was over a dozen speech crashes. And El, its one thing to know an obvious bug, and another to "exterminate" it.

Thumbs Up

I know this might be useful unless it is bug related, but I got my LBA1 cd back and decided to run it. Obviously it didn't run first time (just to make sure) but after patching it (with your new patch) it ran well. I played around a bit and the videos + scenery zoom works fine. Only squable I got is that I was unable to change my volume settings (no effect when I do)

Other wise all sounds work, video resolution (SVGA to VGA) works movies play perectly and game speed is fine.

The reason I am posting this is for statistics:
I am running it on a system with:
Windows ME
AMD K6-2 350mhz
64mb
S3 Trio 64
Yamaha Sonata OPL3 SA
LBA1 European CD version
without extra changes to the CFG

I will have to finish the game to say it is totally bug free... but so far so good.

I will get my new system, a 1.4Ghz AMD with the new GeForce3, tommorow and then I will run further test on it.

BTW I have given the source of the patch to ColdBlood (he is the ASM and Memory DisASM guru) and if he has the time we might be able to help. I am considering to port the source to C/C++ (Turbo C++ 3), but I can't see the neccesity. Since we both know pascal and inline assembly.

Thanks for your astounding work.

I am not sure if you want to or if it is possible with your BIOS, but using BIOS you can change prioroties to make IDE 1st and SCSI 2nd.

But maybe FunnyFrog could add drive selection to the patch so that it can force the game to use another drive letter. That would be better suited.

IDE will always come first for the BIOS since it's onboard, my SCSI isn't. But for some reason Windows assigns a SCSI cd-rom has a higher drive priority in windows than a IDE CD-rom, with harddisks this is the other way around.
But it doesn't realy matter, I hooked up my SCSI drive with the audio cable to my soundcard and my IDE driver with a digital audio cable to the soundcard

FuunyFrog, I have taken the game to my college to test the patch on NT systems. I have tested it on two machines with an SiS Truecolor 4mb video card, 64mb ram and pentium machines. I have also tested it on a Windows 2000 machine with a Riva TNT 2 crad onboard and I get the same error in the dump file:

DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.8
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1992

Copyright (c) Adeline Software International 1994, All Rights Reserved.

Please wait, loading drivers using LBA.CFG...

Initialising Midi device. Please wait...

Initialising SVGA device. Please wait...

Built-in VESA Super VGA Driver

Initialising Mixer device. Please wait...

Initialising Wave device. Please wait...

Error: SVGA card BIOS does not support VESA extensions.
Please refer to your SVGA card documentation for installing VESA driver.

It is odd that these cards with VESA support wont run with the game (with VESA compatible driver set in the CFG). I have not installed Univbe or Display Doctor (need to get a copy first) and when I get the time I will try this next, I just want to inform you that these operating systems do give weird problems. Side note, I am not very familiar with them, but they do basically work the same.

I found the following text on this page:
Quote:
Under Windows NT or 2000, you may be required to use the IBM VGA driver even with boards that support VESA graphics under DOS and Windows 9x or Me, because the NT/2000 drivers for those boards do not include VESA support.
If it is true, we can do little: ask video card manufacturer for a better driver or upgrade to Windows XP which is said to provide VESA support and Sound Blaster emulation. (I haven't tested.) Or maybe some Windows NT guru could write a "VESA emulator" for DOS programs. Sound Blaster emulators for NT do exist: VDMSound and SoundFX 2000.

There is also a Microsoft Knowledge Base article about similar problem in Windows 95. I'm not sure whether it applies to Windows NT.
Edit: It applies. Make sure LBA is started full-screen.

I'm using Windows XP at the moment and I'm trying to get LBA to work in it, but I'm having problems with cd-rom's too... my LBA cd doesn't works in all of my cd-rom drives. Would it be possible to disable LBA1's cd-rom check and set a manual path to the data instead?

I already tested a updated patch made by FunnyFrog that checks all cd-drives. and it worked well.. so I think he'll release it soon.

NT systems don't allow programs write to the system, so DOS programs can't find the VESA bios because they are not allowed to. The drivers for NT systems should contain VESA emulation.

Hm... it didn't work for me... but probably because of XP.

This is my drives layout:

A: floppy

C: harddisk
D: harddisk
E: harddisk

F: burner
G: cd-rom
H: cd-rom 2 (virtual)

X: harddisk (network)
Y: burner (network)
Z: cd-rom (network)

This many drives may couse some troubles... I'll try to disable some or something.

EDIT: never mind, I need to enable DOS support for CD-ROM's in XP...

EDIT2: the problem appeared to be the virtual CD-ROM drive (quite logically...) but when disabling it, it still doesn't works. And I'm sure that the CD-ROM's have normal support for DOS now.

EDIT3: tonight I'll try it on my other computer with Windows 98.
