Spheros -- Body Anatomy

Sorry for spamming the forums, but this thread would have happened eventually.
  • Head : What shape? How should the jaw look? Should there be a jaw at all?
  • Eyes : How big should they be? What shape? Eyelids? Brows? Should there be a dip under and above the eyes, as with humans?
  • Nose : Human? Slightly humanoid? The way it is in the game? Should there be a brige under the nose?
  • Ears : Human? Partily human? Adapt the game design's look?
  • Mouth : Should it have lips? If so, what structure should they have? Should they have a human muscle system or like in the game, where they can form into absolutely any shape?
  • Hands : How many fingers? What about the joints? Do we want to adopt a human skeleton for this part?
  • Feet : In case we show anybody barefoot, how would the feet look like?

Here are some game designs for spheros:

Here are some concept designs from forum members:

http://forum.magicball.net/attachmen...1&d=1044823112 (Cloneguy)

At the end of the thread we should come up with a clear consensus that will dictate how future concepts/models are rendered.

The sphero design that I was the most happy with is this updated Bob Vortix and Tippet Sphero one: http://el-muerte.student.utwente.nl/...o_citizens.jpg

The darker shading shows the suggested shape of the sphero underneath.

The hands were in this case larger versions of human hands. The arm is in a sort of ball and socket joint, and the hand acts as a weight, causing the arm to swing like a pendulum.

The feet question brings up an interesting point. The feet I have done here are too small. The feet don't look like they could support the whole body's weight and could perhaps be more like the bottom of a wine glass, extending both at the front and the back. Another way to do it would be to move the legs themselves further back and just have the feet extending in the front.

Because I had made the bodies more or less the same in the drawing as each other, I put more variation in the face. The features are all in the same places but they are more like human faces, with different sizes and shapes to the noses, eyes and mouths. I did do a little bit of a chin because I thought that otherwise the area of the head below the nose would be following the sphere shape, and might look too odd.

I'll do a drawing of a naked sphero but, before I get started, any suggestions? The direction I'm going in is to give them those rigid robotic proportions but make them look more like flesh and blood.

For some reason, the human faces bother me. Your design (as you've already mentioned) makes them look like walking human heads. It scares me a little for some reason. I mean, it's a pretty perfect design for what it is, but might it be going a bit too far away from the game's design?

If you look at any of those game design links I provided above, you'll see that every sphero has round eyes. Maybe that could give them more of an LBAish look.

The arms are mostly good and I also think that the fingers could be fatter and shorter. Also, it seems that everybody on Twinsun has 4 fingers, so maybe our sphero designs should as well.

You're right about the feet in your sketches being a bit too small. I'd also add (can't see them in the pictures) joints to the legs and make the legs fatter. The legs in the sketches are too thin.

Overall, those are awsome designs. Maybe I'm the only one that has a problem with them. Actually, I've never liked the way the spheros looked, even in the games. Something about them being walking (earless) heads with seemingly no genitals (no wonder they're going extinct) has always bothered me.

Those are all good points. I'll give all those suggestions a go in the drawing.

Here's a Sphero skeleton, with jouints shown. I've justrealised that the elbow joints shouldn't be hinges but ball and sockets, so that the Spheros can reach things adequately.
I've adressed most of the suggestions except for the width of the lower half of the legs; in the game screenshots the Sphero legs are very thin when they meet the feet: http://el-muerte.student.utwente.nl/...aracters_1.gif

Ah, that's much closer to the source!

The question now is, which source do we go by, the in-game graphics' or the FMV's? Because looking at that collage of characters, the spheros seem to have triangular eyes.

What do we think about that?

Extremely ugly, but we might need ugly sometime...who knows.
Quite like the nose and the eyeline, but the limbs are too laggy to be much real help.
Still, cool find.

I would also like the repeat that I agree with Lightwing that this sketch is excelent and purhapes what we should head towards:

Well, I quite like it, the expresion on the first version is friendly and overall has a lot of charecter.
Im just not really sure that style would work when converted too 3D.
The squared off face, for instance, would just look low poly and cubish.
In 2d art that looks stylish, in 3D it looks rubbish

I know your quality of 3d is of a Professional Standard so judge me on my lack of experience and first time 3D modelling

Hope you like it

It's a nice model for a Relentless mod.

Can't say the same thing for a feature film.

lol, its a comical model. But i think overall its a good style for the Sphero. If someone made a better quality, But the same style, i think it would keep the style of lba with out being to ugly
