Twinsun Model Needed :) (note; U not E)

Anyone think they could help me out by modeling it?

Dont have to worry too much about textures, but you can use this as a guide;

I'm more interested in shape/geometry of the model.

This should be a high poly sphere with the islands as seperate mesh, possibly a bumpmapping and hdri-reflections for the oceans.
The outer ring (himalayas or something) could be done as an extruded mesh ring with some noise modifiers on it. Seperate mesh also.
At last we'd add some pflow volumetric cloud stuff. Which will have to be animated as well.

What's your thoughts on this?

Islands as separate meshs's probably is a good idea for easy editing later and increased flexibility with the stack.

For the moment, all this is for is for a space flyby view at the start, so detail doesn't have to be too high. While the camera will go lower, it will pass ver clouds, so a switchover will be done anyway.

HDR reflections are a maybe..while they look amazing, they might not fit the style I'm going for..at least for this bit. Going for a more magical/stylised look rather then realism.
Either way, its fairly easy to experiment with texturing and shader styles once the mesh is made.

As for the clouds, Volumetric might be overkill for this distance.
I would like the clouds to swirl around and move...much like the static picture above implies.
If volumetric is the only way to do that, I guess we have too...but getting that looking right on a sphereric "shell" of a planet cloudscape will be pretty tricky.
There might be an easier way with a few layers of animated textures, although how you'd get the swirling texture to start with I don't know.

The swirling effect can be made with textures relatively easy. You need to have an opacity map (alpha png for different grades of opacity) with a swirling cloud painted on it. Then copy the mesh of the globe, and delete about 80% of it from the bottom so you'll only have yourself a small rounded shell that matches the twinsun mesh.
Scale it up, and place it up just a bit. So you'll have yourself the height of clouds. Set the centre of this mesh to the centre of the globe, so you can rotate the cloud accross the globe. Add the opacity map now.
Then animate it by doing so while spinning ánd reposioning the clouds mesh.

It's a relatively simple job, you can even create different layers. If you don't understand, just say so.

Side question: will the northern hemisphere be seen in the intro, too?

Yes.
Thats why I gave the texture map as an extra referance for layout.

Not bad, ...but i wanted the swirls themselfs animated rather then just spin.
As in,actualy curles of smoke.

I'm thinking it will have to be particals on paths of some sort.
Maybe even texture planes that bend over a path.

When you only need a flyby there's no difference in seeing the clouds move itself other than move in total without a real change of shape of the cloud itself. It's too slow to see the difference.

But I do agree on your point, because even though this is said I do have my conceirns about using this technique.

well, unrealisticaly fast clouds are allowed in this sequence
Its not just a flyby in space, but also slightly in time too, showing the creation of the planet.
I thought swirling clouds could look cool, but its not essential by any means.

Partly why Im not too worried about textures, as long as everything is in place roughly for the geometry.

Another pointer for the Twinsun model:

I suggest taking a cube and smoothing it a couple times. I find working with quad spheres easier than the standard sphere primative.

Something I learned at school.

It's ideally used for when you're making a character you plan to animate.

Twinsun may or may not come across the problem of being created out of a primative sphere.

Myself, I never like it when 12 billion edges meet at a single point. Granted, you can taper off that point, it's a bit easier with just smoothing a cube.

What about a geosphere with some Paint Deformation? It takes a couple of minutes, here's an example:

Yes, thats another method.
Could also make a hightmap and use displacement.

Still, Im so busy with other things I thought it was a project someone else could take up, hence the thread.

Personal thoughts on this;

In industry, you cant just model something just like that. Everything needs to be modelled, textured, lighted etc... for a particular shot.

For example, if you had a close up shot, i would personally recomend using ZBrush to modell the landscape and such to add an immence amount of detail, then you have to take into account the rendering power and time constraints, as zbrush simply exports displacment maps you can then convert to .map files with mental ray applies it as a displacment map at render time.

When my exams are over, i might make a demonstration of what i mean. For the moment i have to finish my 2d game engine project

We are not in industary, we are not being paid, and well...its going to blow up probably a few seconds after its on the screen
Dosnt need to be that detailed.
There might be another shot of the planet at the end of the film, however.

Also, I thought ZBrush could export a low res model and normals for it?
(which would be vastly easier to render then displacement maps, which are more like heavy subdivisions)

Yep, thats true. You could also have a low "poly" displacment map. In the .map format, mental ray only subdivised where needed, and can render displacments from .maps 4 times faster (from my experience)

That might be worth doing then.

Problem I got a bit at the moment is so many things to do and so many different ways to do them.
I'm wondering also the best way to doing the explosion, for instance.
I can think of at least half a dozen different ways

Will we see some blue thing crash in the northern sun and the planet get red?

blue thing crash into the northern sun? dont remember that
oh well, another excuse to replay the game

The planet will turn red, I guess...maybe turn red and crack a bit?
Probably not in the same way as the game though...that might look a bit too simple for these days.

wow, never spotted that. I mean, I saw the flare leave the well, but I just thought it was generic special effect. Didn't notice it from the planet view.

Well, logically isn't it Funfrock trying to absorb the power of the stella entity and getting everyone blown up in the process?
Maybe he thought it would be kinda like drilling oil, when its more like triggering a premature birth.

I think FunFrock does not know the planet is blown up as a result. He would die from the explosion, too.

El: good point.

Of course, he merely thinks he is going to absorb the power somehow.
