The music

Philip Vachey.
How the fuck did he do it?
I mean, really?
Even after 5 years, I'm still completely overwhelmed every time I listen to the music from LBA. Any track, you name it. The man is a genius.

I just had to let people here know it, cause I don't think we've payed enough attention to this wonderful music from the game. NO music has ever made me feel like the tracks from LBA make me feel. And to think these great music creations "went to waste" only on this computer game, and weren't spread out on their own. I really think this man should release albums with all the LBA tracks, and I REALLY think these albums should be sold in like a GAZILION copies. Every person in the world should have this music scarred in his mind like we do, even if it won't include the wonderful memories from the game. The music itself is amazing enough.

Anyway, I also wanted to ask - does anyone know if Philip Vachey DID release an album with more music? I'd love to know where to buy that. Also, if anyone knows this guy's email, I'd appreciate it to.

The man is a genius indeed.

There was a night I couldn't sleep so I puted the LBA2 disc in the CD player and listened to this 1 track all night over and over again!

I think the reason your feel that the music of LBA was so moving is because they take your mind back to the story, and different parts of it. And, I'm guessing since you seem to play it alot, the story has kindof grown on you. I know, when I hear the main theme it still reminds me of a low-quality polygonal sprite running around a map But quite frankly, aside from the theme, I've heard better in other games. It's easy to praise the music of the game, but you gotta back it up.

Just for some insight, one of my favourite tracks of any game would have to be HellMarch from RedAlert, its pretty cool.

No, I can assure you, it's not just cause the music remindes me of the game... Not at all... Hell, when I finally got the LBA1 cd a few years ago (I played LBA1 a long time ago, only without music), I first sat down and listened to all the music and LOVED it... I started actaully PLAYING the game only after a month or so, when I managed to make the damn thing work...

And I know there are other music creations... But the special thing about LBA music is just the way it swiftly moves from happy and even complete "cutesy" music, to really powerful or sad music... And overall, the music is just overwhelming, full of instruments, and really is hypnotizing... I know and love a LOT of bands, but I'm telling you, this music is just something special...

BTW, I was searching the net for Phillipe Vachey and came up with an interview this website had with him. They also put "Song For Gabriel" for download on their main page. It's supposed to be this kind of "Classical music" website. The website sux, and the interview, well, that stupid webmaster was too lazy to translate it from french, so he let "google.com" translate it... So... Expect lots of stupid mistakes there...

That dumbass site

The Interview

Philipe Vachey and Yasunori Mitsuda are my favorite music composers.... to bad Phil didn't compose a whole cd of it's own (still I find the Toy Commander music quite disapointing)
Also, I don't think I like it because it reminds me to LBA but also because it are true masterpieces themselves

Hellmarsh? It was pretty nice but not something I think of 'wow, what a master piece'. Voice Rythm, Face the Enemy and Depthcharge are much better (I love Voice Rythm).

Hellmarch was great.. I liked the funky disco theme from Half-Life, as well. However, the best music I've heard in a game must be in Unreal (remember that cool track that played as you emerged from the spaceship onto the surface of na-pali)...
Either that, or Deus Ex - The theme and the music in Hong Kong rocked...
Or System Shock 2 - Crazy techno madness...
Come to think of it - the radio style muzac in Gta 1 and 2 were fairly cool (Rumour has it that GTA3 has 6 hours of CD quality Music...)...
However, the soundtrack for RTCW was fair shit, as was THPS2...
Giants had some nice, brassy, ambient music...
LBA was good, but not great (Gabriel and the main theme were nice, however)..

Hmm... A bit disjointed, but I hope it made sense...

Oh, yes, and a CD of Phillip Vachey music wouldn't have mass market material. It only makes sense in conjunction with the audio-visual environment of the game (Like, in LBA 1, in whiteleaf desert, when the horse canters past and teh music swells to a crescendo... That wouldn't make sense, or emotionally affec, someone who hasn't played the games)...

LBA's music was probably the best game music i have ever heard, then probably FF7 and Grandia.

Silverfish- I dunno.
It may not fit any pre-diffined "style" of music, or be suitable for mass marketing,But I freqenttly listen to the LBA music, without playing the game.
And I don't really think its just because of the game, I think its much more then that.

I certainly think the music is great, really great. And again not because of the game, but because of the music on itself. Strange, it is quite simple music with few instruments, but still nice to listen to.

The Finalfantasy 7 music just bores and irritates me after a couple of minutes to be true.

Vampire the masquerade has some great music IMHO.

Vachey is amazing! I still listen to the LBA1 Track daily because I'm trying to play a piece from it and each time I listen to it it still overwhelms me. Along with the Russian Symphony Orchestra (who I think played the LBA1 music pieces) I don't think it would've been as good. LBA2's track is just as great too.

ET: yeah I saw that interview a while ago, there's also one from rpg town as well and is in one of the threads.

My favorite game composers are:
Phillip Vachey (LBA1, LBA2)
Michael Land (MI2, CMI)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears)
...and of course the almighty Nobuo Uematsu (FFVI, FFVII)

Oh DEFINITELY, Michael Land rules as well. Especially the theme for MI3... It just ruled, undoubtably...

Btw, no one said if he knows how to get Vachey's email yet... Maybe Axx should have an idea?

There's a lot of game music that rules. Game music isn't realy easy to create tho. You need to compose music that fits in the envoirement (scenery), but also in the actions happening. It's just like the music created for movies. Except the budget is a lot smaller.

/me enjoys listing to game music a lot...

BAH i just lost my long reply

erm... what did i say...

I think film music is hgarder to compose because films are linear, so the composer hasn't got an excuse not to make everything perfect and coordinated. Game composers just have to create a general atmosphere for different sections of the game.

If yous like listening to the LBA music you should listen to the Adiemus albums by Karl Jenkins (Adiemus II is the best but there are four in all, so far!). And also the very very good Myst and Riven soundtracks (Riven is the best. The Myst III Exile soundtrack is like Riven in some places but actually like the LOTR soundrtack in others).

erm... there was something esle... oh yeh!

Darkflame, you missed out two of Williams' best ones, Schindler's List and Harry Potter!

indeed.
I probably missed a lot more too.
--
Kieron - I don't really get your augement, surely Film's being liner make it easier, not harder to compose for? (allthough they probably can "get away" with more in games.)
A (good) game composser, has to work closely with the enviroment these days.
It used to be ok, just to do approximate sounds for different scenes in games, but now improvments in technology mean that music blends and changes with the enviroment of the game.
This is particular common in console games, although PC games are catching up fast.
The composser has to make music where the "feel" can change quickly yet smoothly.

I too love the LBA music to bits WITHOUT the game! I especially like LBA2's sountrk.(my favorites are the theme itself, Empire, and the Mosquibee themes....I love sort of ringing bells on Citadel Island...really enchanting!!)

Other wonderful game music is Unreal's (very atmospheric), Final Fantasy 7 and Toonstruck and Broken Sword........also Wipeaout had a good techno soundtrack.

Ps-Modern game music is really uninspiring and dreadful, even GTA3's.......that is why I think modern games lack emotion...
