Sure, if I had any money on PayPal right now, which I don't. And no way of getting any due to me living a crap country that PayPal only partially supports.

That sucks. I'd get it for you if I had the money but I haven't had a job in over 6 months

But... that is a "digital download" that looks like the GOG version (added script, sketches, dev team photo...). I haven't found any indication that it is an Australian version.

Just checked: GOG version of LBA2 seems to be unaffected by the bug.

Well, the GOG's version is essentially the European version, the game files are identical.

For the game running problems, if you use Windows Vista or above, some CD emulation software may not work correctly with LBA (I think this is due to the virtual drive specifications, which make it appear as a disk drive, not as a CD drive to the game engine). If that's the problem, you may want to try another CD emulator. From my experience, MagicDisk works fine with LBA2.
Great! That means I will be able to test it if I can't run it properly.

I use Daemon Tools Lite and it recognizes LBA2 as a CD, installation went fine. It's the game being graphically mixed up. I took a screenshot from the game but it looks normal, here's a camera shot.

I'm using Windows 7, has someone had this problem? I tried compatibility modes, running as administrator and closing explorer.exe but It didn't change anything. If I can't run it like this, I'll just replace the SCENE.hqr in the GOG version and do a playthrough.

If you download the SCENE.zip I attached on page 3 and replace your SCENE.hqr in your LBA2 folder (make backup!) with the one in the zip, you can also try to get the bug talking to Joe. If we both get the bug it's a better statistic

EDIT: Oops, forgot the picture. It's low quality but you can clearly see the error. I'm also using a netbook, but shouldn't matter since I can use 800x600 and 640x480 resolutions.

It seems to me LBA 2 is not compatible with your graphics card. Either use DOSBox, or more easily, use DxWnd.

I've seen this problem before on my pc as well, but I didn't need to. I think I used a patch, which fixed the graphics completely.

That would be FunnyFrog's patch and it ends up adding more bugs to the game, such as the car steering bug.

But is it possible to patch the patch? I believe it was understood as some byte that was overwritten or something, that apparently shouldn't be.

Its never irrelevant to talk to any character on any game. He may not add anything realy interesting for you, but it might change the speech lines of other characters or just say something funny that will make you happier.

You never know

Also, if you're playing RPGs and don't talk to every character on the game, you're doing it wrong

Aww, we still love you anyway

As J McKalling said, if you want to test if the bug is connected to Joe, just download the bugged Scene.hqr Necdilzor posted, and replace your original one to make the game vulnerable to this bug.

Aye, that's right.
The only way to make a non-bug-inducing version of FunnyFrog's patch would be to rewrite it from scratch (for which we'd need the source code which I'm not sure is available), and have it actually insert a new segment into the executable file, write the new code there, and have it call the new segment at the relevant point. Not impossible to achieve (segments in these kind of executable files are by definition relocatable, even in the file itself) but it would require a lot of work, and it would result in an executable file that is 512 or more bytes bigger than the original executable file.

Well I don't think 512 bytes would be any deal at all for a bigger exe.
But the difficulty of making such a patch may indeed be too much.

I just think it would be awsome if we could collaboratively make this possible, to have something we can leave our kids so they don't have to trouble theirselves with bugs...

Again, why is such a patch even needed. You can use use DxWnd to run the Windows version of the game. Or install the game in a virtual machine running Windows 95 or the like. The patch was needed years ago when virtual machines weren't often running and DxWnd was unknown. But now I just don't see a need anymore.

Okay, I did a playthrough of the US version and I've talked to Joe after crashing with the space shuttle. The wizards weren't there in the statue. Here's a savegame as proof. (You have to use the Dark Monk's key to get the statue emerge from the lava.) I think the wizards should be there in the statue if you're playing the European version, and shouldn't if you are playing the US version.

Yeah, I did an analysis of file dates/times. The Creative Labs version is just the standard Brazilian/South American version, so slightly later than the US version. Therefore, if that one has the bug, then so does the US version. We know the European version does not have the bug and I'd say the Asian one doesn't either, though maybe I should submit its SCENE.HQR to Zink for further examination.

Or, if Zink is willing to privately leak to me whatever tool he's using to read those LBA 2 scenes, I could analyze the stuff myself.

Awesome! I think that must be the problem. I'm also doing a playthrough with GOG version but the bugged HQR from my original CD. I saved before talking to Joe, so I'll do it twice from there, one time without talking to Joe and another time without talking to Joe. If more people can report this, we'll have concrete evidence that this is the reason for the bug

I'm assuming you played through the rest of the game from that point?
However, it could be an idea to use the scene editor as well, to exclude all possibilities of other triggers. Can anyone do this?

Keep this up, this is awesome stuff

I mean the savegame editor, forgot the name. The program that allows you to move yourself without traveling.
I.e. edit yourself into a different place.
