Lightbulb LBA1 Catamaran: Scale Model

Hello everybody,

while working on "lba world" (https://github.com/solarix95/lbaworld) I play around a lot with "blender". This gave me an idea....

... so this is how to build your own lba1 catamaran scale model:

Ingredients:
--------------------------------
- Blender
- LBA1 BODY.HQR
- Balsa wood
- Aluminum tube
- Cutter, epoxy resin

Build steps:
-------------------------------
  1. Extend "blender" with the addons "blender-lba" (https://github.com/vegard/blender-lba) and "Export Paper Model" (https://blenderartists.org/t/export-paper-model/476597)
  2. In blender: Load Model #49 from body.hqr and export it as a paper model.
  3. Play around with different sizes. Build a small paper prototype (my wife: "WTF are u doing? Why?!?")
  4. Glue balsa and the 2d paper printout together
  5. Cut out all "polygons"
  6. Glue it again on a new 2d printout and cut out the shape in one piece.
  7. Fold up the paper/balsa model. Fill edges with epoxy. You can make it stronger by filling the model with "building foam". If you don't fill it with foam: better don't let your 3yrs old son play with it.
  8. Stick all pieces together using aluminum tubes.
  9. Color your new catamaran
  10. Buy your wife something nice. Maybe she will sew a sail for your new catamaran then (I'm still working on that task).

Cheers,
solarix

Oh my Sendell, that is so impressive! So in theory you could recreate the whole LBA universe with this method, right? As long as it is made of polygons...

Really nice to see people still showing their love for the game and working in custom projects like this.

In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

Thanks!

Yes, SpaceGuitarist, in theory you could recreate the whole LBA universe. Of course there are some challenges:
  • Polygon "thickness" (1mm) doesn't exist in a virtual world. That makes it hard to create convex shapes.
  • Hovering parts
  • Spheres (LBA1-Vehicles don't have "wheels", only "spheres")
But you're right.. I love the 3D-Model of Joe the Elf. On paper it looks ... makeable:

Having a real LBA1-dinofly would also be very nice..but for now I have to work on my software project again

Impressive work, both on the catamaran model and the github project. Low Poly to Paper Render looks fantastic, what a nice idea.

Will look closer your progress on the project and waiting for more models here !

Thanks everybody!

On the github, I'm working on "Engine"-Stuff (Tools, Lba-Data-Backend, Configuration, SceneGraph, Menu-Rendering). Lot of work, but I'm still going to create a playable 3D-game..

Low-Poly-Paper/Wood-Rendering: let's see whats next

Wow, that is real neat. I knew those limited polygons were going to come in handy someday!
