Your top 5 must listen to musics

We have books and movies, I thought why not music ? I'm always amazed the amount of good and completely different things that exists out there.

So here comes my, if not top, but five tracks I recommend listening (before you die, 'cause after you might not be able to enjoy them...).

-MITSOURA : Tutti Frutti
She is a hungarian gypsy woman who started with gypsy folk music. That piece is based on one, but reworked with modern elements. I love her voice and find that piece superbly orchestrated (there are far worse on stage).
World music at its finest !

-Massilia Sound System : Pauvre de nous
A group from Marseille in France (Massilia is the older name of Marseille), mixing french and occitan (a local language) into their lyrics, mixing once again folk and modern elements, I just love that whole album !
Once again, world music at its finest !

-Talking Heads : Psycho Killer
Eough world music (for now) I know very few about that group, "Stop Making Sense" is the only album/concert I've ever heard of. We have the dvd version of their concert, they are incredibly good and I don't understand why they are so unknown.
This scene is the opening of the concert dvd.

-Magyar Tekerõ Zenekar (Hungarian Hurdy-gurdy Orchestra) : Tourdion
A french folk song played by the Hungarian Hurdy-gurdy Orchestra... Nothing more I could really say about it, it's interesting how other groups play it as a dance song, whereas the Orchestra plays it more like an anthem. It has a very medieval atmosphere, just beautiful.
Being hard to find, you'll have to download it, but don't worry, it's perfectly legal, taken from my hurdy-gurdy teacher's webpage.

-Moussu T e lei jovents : Roge Negre
I couldn't help it and put inanother world music Moussu T (Mister T and the youngs) was a member of the Massilia Sounds System before they disbanded. I have the feeling that this album, called "Home Sweet Home", is more focused on american folk, although this piece doesn't sound like it to my ignorant ears.

I tried to post as much differently styled music as I could, if everyone could do the same,w could be able to discover lots of different things

Nice list you have here. All things I didn't know of (except Massilia Sound System), and quite interesting!

Here is mine. Those are some songs that passed the test of time, and managed to stay on my playlist for many years. They are not necessarily my favorite songs, because I tried to pick from different styles, as you recommended.
  • Again - Archive
Progressive Rock. My all time favorite song, and favorite band.
This live version is also very good, imo. Incidently it was performed at a major French festival which was 15 minutes drive from my (pretty secluded) hometown, so I was lucky enough to be there!

    -
  • It Ain't Necessarily So - Oscar Peterson's version
That's the kind of jazz I like. That and gypsy jazz, Django Reinhardt style. But there's much I don't know about jazz, which is a shame, because I'm sure it's full of treasures.
    -
  • Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh - Magma
Alien music. Not like anything else you've ever heard.
    Transcendental.

    -
  • Lady Writer - Dire Straits
The Best of Dire Straits was my lullaby album in my parents car, coming back from visiting my grand parents as a kid, and I still listen to it more than 20 years later.
    -
  • Silent Love - Joe Hisaishi
I listen a lot to OSTs, from LBA2, BG&E to The Big Blue, Amélie and obviously Ghibli's movies! I chose this song because I like it independently of the film in which it appeared.

Ha, magma, I know of them, I'm also surprised that you know about Massilia Sound System they aren't that much known...
That jazz isn't bad either, very relaxing.

I haven't decided whether I want to respond to this with albums, individual songs, bands, etc. I will definitely come up with something soon though! Great thread!

Heavy Metal

4. Boss' Daughter - Pop Evil
Hard rock, alternative metal, post-grunge
If I had to have a theme song ^ this would be it lol

5. Bangarang - Skrillex
Dubstep

I don't know about writting a full description so I wrote the genres instead.

I reccommend 1-4. They're badass.
these are quite class, particularly 1)

i'm guessing this is "songs i've been listening to on repeat recently" thread so here're my 5. i'm not doing the genre thing because genres confuse me:

1) Captain Beefheart - Electricity
p certain i could listen to this album forever. or just this song. if i went deaf and this was the last thing i heard i would be ok with this

2) Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Going Down
i remember singing to this in a club when i was a tot, whenever this would come on we'd all get excited and proper rock out. we practically had a dance routine for it (which consisted mostly of headbanging)

3) Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Kimi Ni 100 Percent
couldn't find the full track so there's the shin-chan opening for it complete with butts. went to see kpp in concert not too long ago so it's still in my system ok

4) Florence + The Machine - Breaking Down
i'd never listened to florence before, no idea why because i'm basically in love at the minute

5) The Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
one of the best music videos ever, plus i've been dancing around my room like a madman to it

Hmmm, a very hard to answer thread, I'll do my best to pick my best five.
I'll pick one per band to make it more diverse.

Radiohead - Idioteque: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNqv3nHyteM
Hard to explain. Something between electro/experimental/indie/future garage.

NOFX - The Decline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwGJ0EHdXDc
One of the most spectacular punkrock songs.

Subradical - Herida: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFd7ZDRCXnY
This is a Chilean band I grew up with, the lyrics are awesome, they're in the description, if anyone's interested in a translation just ask.

Tiro al aire - Re 26: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2wQieKDu6I
PostPunk. It's about being different. Again, if you want the translation just ask

Dance Gavin Dance - And I told them I invented Times New Roman : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOzAK6_1pu4
Post Hardcore. Watch your ears.

BONUS TRACK!!!

Love song.

I hereby declare this thread deserves to live again!

***

If I were to show someone else the best music I've ever listened to, it would be LBA 2 soundtrack. And that'd be more than 5 pieces of music. So I'll pick other music, since everyone here already heard those. I'll do this later though.

In other worlds, they put a message inside an asteroid to protect it while it travels through space to reach some other planet. In this case it is a gift, a guitar, rather than just a message.

I wanted to make a list of my Top 5 musics of 5 genres (Rock, Metal, Anime, Pop and Games) but I'm too lazy to do so =/

But well, I'll have a lot of free time in the next week, so I just might post it in here later
