Is "maybe" the polite-man's "no"?
If you didn't want to do something, would you say no or would you say maybe?
Or, more importantly, if you DID want to do something, would you just say yes, or would you say maybe?

I think this also applies to difficult questions that someone wants you to agree with, that you just... don't, or something someone thinks is true that isn't. You don't want to be confrontational, so you say, "yeah, maybe..." while thinking in your head "hell no."

I would never use "maybe" as "no", as traditionally in our family, whe our father said "maybe" it meant "yes" and we had won

I usually say "no" and then politely explain why. And if there are no good reasons, I make them up.
