AR/VR and awesome PC gaming tech.

Wondered if anyone here planned to get an AR or VR headset?

Theres a lot of very cool stuff just around the corner. Personally, I dont know what to get...but I'll probably end up with at least one :P

Most of you have probably heard of the Oculas Rift;

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-into-the-game

Very well reviewed VR headset for PC Games. Lots of support so far - Valve seems heavily backing it.
Elite4 has also pledged support, and I for one would love to play a space combat/exploration sim on these.

Price: $ 300
Resolution: 640×800 per eye...but will be much higher when its out.
AR/VR: VR only.

Potentiality much more interesting is CastAR:

Overall explanation/great story about how it came about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=cc2NQVQK69A

If you have time this vid explains the tech in detail:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=GpmKq_qg3Tk

It uses a surface which 3d multi-user viewpoints are projected on. Its all head-tracked, so its perfect for RTS/TBS or any other game that could be visualized as a table-top scenario.

It also has clip on devices for standalone AR/VR as well - making it very flexible.
Interestingly this also spun of from a Valve project. They choose the Rift, this team left to continue work on this.

And by team, I mean Jeri Ellsworth ..as she basically made all this.
The development story is kinda awesome in itself.

Price: $200
Resolution: 720p in each eye.
Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-and-vr-system
AR/VR: Both. And tracking. They even have a 3d sensing "wand" control that is pretty close to what I hoped the Wiimote would be before the wii came out;

More to come...

Isn't it?
Valve should be kicking themselves for letting her go!

She has a load of youtube videos on techy things too, but I haven't watched any.

The tech is indeed cool, but too expensive for my pocket. Anyway, I would be more interesting in oculus rift.

These sound so awesome ! I can't wait for them to fail and for the prices to go down

I mean, virtual reality sets have already been made, the most well-known being the virtual boy, but Sony also made some (don't know how they are named but my father has one, I'll ask him tomorrow).

Aaaaand they all failed miserabily... Maybe these will work better, and won't trigger motion-sickness or headaches...

Either way, I'll buy an oculus when the time comes

Latency has got a heck of a lot less, which was a big factor in the sickness.
Resolutions have also gone up, so that should help too.
Of course with the 5+ VR/AR headsets coming out, no one knows yet how successful this new market will be. But theres enough design variation that no specific flaw should hold up the idea.

AR, meanwhile, never really had that problem, but only was ever used in very specialist industries till now.

As for the Sony one, they have had a few over the years, but if its fairly recent in might be like one;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=OQig04Xgy28

Thats their most recent thing - this year.

Hugely overpriced though, imho.
£1300

The sony's new gear looks awesome, but almost no one will buy it.... the price is too high for anyone non-rich or without lots of stored money to buy it.

Indeed.
I expect a heavy price cut, then discontinuing it.
Even a full HD 1080p Rift (which is what they are aiming for), is probably going to be half that price. I just cant see Sony competing.

Meanwhile, heres another entry into the market;

Avegant Virtual Retinal Display: Prototype hands-on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=lsFMjMt_oGo

The main advantage of this one, apparently, is it directly projects light onto the retina, so it avoids the focusing issue other VR specs have. It should feel a lot more natural and thus no eyestrain at all.
It also is double the resolution of the others at the moment, even in prototype form.

But tell me, someone with retina problems would then be unable to use this product, no? I'm obviously not an expert in this, sorry, but this just came into my mind

Thats a good point. The other ones could probably just stick another lens in, how this one would correct I have no idea.
Then again.....if it bi-pass's the eyes lens completely, maybe it doesn't matter. I think Id need a digram of how this works.

It wouldn't matter cause there are no retina problems in virtual reality. LOL

Bad joke.

Next up is the META.
"version 0.1" apperently, and already its the most advanced/closest thing to Dennou Coil style AR we have;
https://www.spaceglasses.com/

Hype video;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=b7I7JuQXttw

Currently what works;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=m-cawkcA-cc

It can project games and 3d modeling in the air, and track your hands to shape and manipulate stuff. You can, for example, model something with your hands and then send it to a 3D printer.

They also, some how, can track folds and distortions even on pure white paper. A demo apprently had ToyStory playing on a bit of paper...that was then folded up, and the video distorted to match the paper.

Price: $667 (Developer version)
Resolution: 960x540 per eye.
So far comes with;
Quote:
Chess
3D Sculpt+Print Tool, in partnership with Game Draw 3D
Laser Tag
Voxel Editor
MetaCraft, a MineCraft simulator

Keep to topic folks

--

Aside from those 4 full 3d VR/AR HMDs, theres of course also Google Glass.
Designed for more out-and-about situations. Keeping you a small window for your communications, in-context information, and translations where-ever you go.

Theres been enough said about Glass online already. Lots of hands on experience, and its still clearly very much in development software wise. (I dont even think the full SDK is out yet for it).

In the same category as Googles Glass, however, theres another competitor.

http://tele-pathy.org/

I dont know much about specs or software, but the form factor is arguably more comfortable and discrete.

All in the last 5 years, many in the last two.

I happen to be very connected to this industry (been to a few private events, and technical I am a invited expert on the W3C working group for AR :P). These arnt the only products coming, theres at least one other AR spec currently not announced.

I guess they are fairly unknown for two reasons;

a) aside from Goggle, no big company is really involved. We arnt getting the hype and press coverage.
Its mostly small firms, kickstarters and the like. Those willing to take the risk on their tech. Big firms, sadly, seem to be very conservative with their products.

b) Its all so new! Seriously things are happening very fast. Some of the tech is pretty cutting edge stuff.

We realy had a boom of these products since a few years ago. No one would imagine things could upgrade this fast! We just launched the PS4 and the Xbox, which are old-style consoles, but we already have those new 3D consoles out there to compete with them!

Tech progression is amazing

Heres another;

http://www.slashgear.com/ora-true-au...uary-22302688/

This is sort of a hybred between Google Glass and the "true" AR types that put images in front of you as you move about.

This significantly has the backing of Wikitude, one of the first major AR location database's. (that is, putting information over real world locations on phones). Wikitude and Layar make up much of the current market.

And another;

Looks like META is beating that one though, at least for the moment;

(ie, Meta has a real thing that works vs the other that seems just a concept)
