Apperently you can now make electron microscopes at home.
You can make electron microscopes at home.
Thats a microscope that can see individual atoms.
You can make it at home.

People saying "wheres my flying car" are missing the point. We really really are living in the future. Such amazing things are now possible.

One day we will live in a half virtual world.

Ive thought this for well over a decade, but I am constantly surprised how soon its coming.
Glass,Vuzix,Meta/SpaceGlass,Episode,Telepathy1,CastAR, the number of company's in the field has been growing exponentially in the last few years.

Microsoft has joined in. And wow. wow. wow.

Hands on;
http://www.wired.com/2015/01/microsoft-hands-on/
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/...-virtual-real/

Oh, sure, it will never be this perfect in real use. Its a product demo - finally rehearsed and refined. And probably too expensive yet.

But its still a stunning leap towards the goal. This is "getting it".
Well done Microsoft. Well done.

Theres been a lot more Hololens (and Windows10) info.

Screenshots and commentary from me here;
https://darkflame.co.uk/EverythingEv...from-build2015

More details here;
https://darkflame.co.uk/EverythingEverywhere/articles/
(keep scrolling past the screens for more)

----

Honestly, even aside from how insane Hololens is looking, Microsoft seems to have got their shit together in general.
Windows10 is shaping up really well. One new Binary made to run on Windows10 can run on any W10 Phone,Tablet,PC,Hololens.....or even a Rasbury Pi O_o
Now THATS a scalable OS.

Also they found a way to make their phones cool; A Windows10 phone is sort of a full PC - plug in a monitor/keyboard and suddenly the phone apps look like PC apps.
Because they are PC apps.

And those same apps can hover in space as hololens windows.

Depends if you mean the people working for Google or the AI hive-mind that will form from Googles experiments :P

I'm a optimist, I think the AI will probably do what it can to stop us wiping ourselves out, if only because we have got it addicted to Cat videos on youtube and someone needs to feed them.

Well, according the blog post earlier I think it can be summed up as first making a nurel network that knows what things look like, then giving it a image and saying
"whatever you see in this picture enhance it"

This image I think is particularly amazing;
https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Q...N1d205bUdEMnhB

It also gives insight a bit into the human brain too - as we often see "animals in clouds"
or whatever. We know it isnt real, but the bit of our brain in charge of recognizing stuff can get pretty overactive.
This is basicaly that turned upto 11.

This is crazy;
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...mixing-up-dna/

We are living in a world were you can do gene splicing at home.

Quote:
GlowGene lets you you extract genes from other lifeforms and put their DNA inside your cells, giving them traits of that animal. You can make glowing cells using jellyfish DNA, red cells that produce hemoglobin, cells that create ethanol, cells that eat plastic, cells that produce light and so on.
You can combine DNA from multiple organisms to create very complex cells.

The cell's abilities and characteristics you create depend on which animal's DNA you extract with our GlowGene DNA extractor!

Ahh ahh, nice one.

Although, it seems we're in a world where we can create virus and spread them easily. I would be concern about that if it would become easier to do at home.

Ummm, this is obviously a hoax/scam. Do you have a reputable source to confirm this is real?

And even if this was real, that wouldn't have been legal. ...right?

Well, I have known for awhile there's a DIY gene splicing movement.
I didn't know it had made it this far, but what I read fits in with that I heard at this talk;

(REALLY recommend people watch this. Its long, but pretty amazing.
I am actually in that crowd...I think my hair is visible somewhere near the front)

That talk was quite a few years ago now, so it seems plausible for this kickstarter today.

Additionally the folks at Hackaday seem to think its "real", but caution its also a bit incomplete, lacking some tools that might be needed;
http://hackaday.com/2015/09/20/ctrl-...-dna/#comments
A lot of the comments seem more focused on the type of technique being used, which flies over my head I am afraid.

Quote:

umm...ish?
Maybe the techs flying to fast for the laws to keep up.
The KS claims its too hard to make anything dangerious, but who knows.

Took a cursory look over that kickstarter, some things:

1) I think they are vastly overstating the effectiveness of their 'gene transferring'. I expect your results would be far more underwhelming than they make out. Inserting DNA into bacteria doesn't have a 100% success rate using even the most advanced techniques.

2) Their technique creates plasmids which will go into the target cells. PLASMIDS ONLY WORK IN BACTERIA. They perpetually say 'your cells' on the kickstarter to purposefully mislead people who don't have a relatively advanced knowledge of genetics. So unless you're planning on distilling E. coli from your faeces, I'm not sure how you could by any stretch of the imagination be genetically modifying 'your' cells.

3) The effect will be short-lived. Cells they are for example bio-luminescent without a purpose will expend more energy than the genetically unmodified ones, and will quickly go extinct when facing the competition of the other bacteria that weren't modified (which will be most of the cells in the petri dish).

I knew you wouldn't disappoint.
That lecture was really fascinating, educational, exciting and inspiring. I saw you at the audience at 39:00

I just finished a preparatory course at biology and epidemiology in an academy here (which is really not much), and this makes me excited to continue learning. I have a cousin 11 years younger than me who already achieved truly amazing things at various scientific fields years ago... so when I look at myself and at my age and at everything I haven't achieved I often feel very dumb. But then every time we meet up we actually achieve significant insights through our conversations... so maybe there's hope for me yet.
[/emo]

I hope what he's saying about how we have nothing to fear from is true. But my hunch is telling me he just might be a bit naive about that.

Indeed. Its sort of one of those inevitable really. For something to truly open up a new field of possibilities it cant help but open up new dangers and abuses too.

I think all we can hope for is as a species we try to invent our nuclear power before our nuclear bombs in future. Doesnt save anyone, but just feels nicer that way around.

Reminds me a bit of something I thought of a few months ago. Generally I think we can expect that if we had to meet aliens, we can expect for them to be peaceful.

Given that as it stands we can already throw humans back to the Stone Age with the press of a button, and we aren't even capable of interstellar travel yet. So the destruction these interstellar aliens would have to be capable of to be so advanced would be beyond our comprehension. So as I reason it, the aliens would have to have been very peaceful to become so advanced without annihilating themselves first in the interim.

I mean, as it stands humanity is the most peaceful it's ever been, and I wouldn't put it past someone to fling a nuke around. War would have to be something foreign to these aliens to reach such technological advances.

Or I could be wrong and they vaporise us before we even know what's happened.

Its always going to be almost impossible for a human to have much insight into a alien mind, but your correct that they cant be mindlessly violent.
Theres still quite a few possibilities though;
* They were multi-planet within their own system for awhile. This makes it vastly harder to get wiped out by their own aggression. But, yet, they could still be aggressive to some extent.
* They are peaceful, but only within their own kind.
* They were peaceful, became space-traveling then became aggressive again after (remember, vaste timescales mind they might even be whole new species born from parent ones in space)
* They are peaceful but determain its still better to kill us for some reason :P

Not that I believe any of those options are true, just a lot of possibilities.
Generally thinking Id say the only things we can say about aliens would be they evolved like us, so they would have some survival instinct, some reproductive instinct and some form of intelligence to form space-travel.
Co-operation with their own kind too OR a individual from that species being able to make a ship on their own. (remember they could be anything - say, 10,000 year old tentacled moles with great engineering skills)

Yeah. The flowing part is the new discovery. Apparently the media doesn't want to stress the brain of the public, so they simplify it, but ironically miss the entire reason why this news has come up in the first place.

The media, including Google's front page, doesn't care of course, they just want sensational headlines.

Indeed. But then sometimes people really dont have much brains anyway.

Anyway, this seems to be a good list of how our knowledge of mars water has progressed;
