What would you rather play?

Hi once again everyone. I have an idea I want to investigate and I'm interested to see what people here have to say on the matter.

If you had to choose between a modernised gameplay format for LBA3 or a different and longer story through the old formats i.e. Twinsens Odessey or Relentless. What would you choose? Its just that I worry a modernised gaming format could put an end to the inspring gameplay that Relentless and Twinsens Odessey provided.

I think its a valid question because for so long I'd imagine an expansion on Relentless. Honestly I dont mind the singular screen position, I'd just be happy with more stories, more places (islands, planets etc) and more puzzels.

What do you think?

Modernized gaming. If LBA 3 came out with the same engine it had in 1994/1997, it would be considered very antiquated, and at best, a PSN/X-Box Live type game.

That being said, I think LBA 3 could use a similar engine with considerably modernized improvements. 3D camera can obviously stay, collision detection improved, Twinsen could be tighter to control and his movement more fluid.

Honestly I prefer the old graphics, but a little bit improved. Like DJ said, some improvements on the physics and a new, longer story. That's everything I need in a new LBA game. 3D TPP hardcore fast shit is not my type...

LBA1 and also LBA2 were the best graphics (and gameplay) ever for their time. It wouldn't be LBA if the next game would suddenly go all retro. And "modernize" can imply "make it like everything else they make today". So no, not "modernize", just harness the current technology and make the best out of it, both in graphics and gameplay.

P.S. "Dynofly"?! Come on. We have enough dinoflies here as it is

This is actualy a good question, because generaly "modern" means more expensive...so, for the same number of manhours you can afford to pay, the game gets shorter.

Id actualy quite like LBA1 style graphics, only with a higher colour depth and better lighting. Leaving it tile-based could let the game be much bigger, and more scaleable to other platforms.
(eg, porting to the DS/PSP could just involve rescaleing the tiles down, rather then remodeling at lower resolution).

As recent demos have showed LBA1 can look kick-arse with nicer lighting

The problem is that the collision detection and general gameplay is very simplistic by today's standards. Most of that would have to be redone. But I agree, DF is right, theoretically, you could definitely keep the same LBA graphical style.

I think it would be good if LBA3 looked like the remake of LBA1

http://forum.magicball.net/showthread.php?t=14288

LBA1 style and better graphics.

Are you sure? I think he's making a sarcastic reply, responding to the title of the thread ("What would you rather play?") by answering Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

I love how we have to translate his posts though.

The whole gameplay, world and graphics need to be re-designed to be up to date (and maybe beyond date ) but the "feeling" can be the same.

Umm, I always imagined LBA3 as something so immersive that's not played from a top-to-bottom perspective but from the very eyes of Twinsen.

And don't get me wrong, I don't mean a FPS. Just a third-person perspective positioned like you were inside of Twinsun, rather than looking at it from above.

I want to feel closer to that amazing universe (without taking some drug trips)

A third-person shooter style would actually work well. Of course, instead of shooting elements, you'd add the ball mechanics, but still, I could definitely see it.

Still, I'd rather have a 3d camera like we did in LBA 2, than a TPS perspective.
