How does LBA create it's atmosphere?

I don't actually ever think it was the gameplay of LBA that kept me going. It was always its atmosphere, locations...music; the question is, how was this great "feeling" created in LBA and LBA2?

Personally, being a big music fan myself, I think it all boils down to what we subconsiously here in the backround. And that was it's original and sometimes dark, sometimes quirkly, backround music. If it wasn't there, I don't think any of the game's "feelings" would have come through.

Yeah, I think a lot of it comes from the music. But the way it all fits together is where the true atmosphere comes from.

I think that the music is indeed a great contributer to the atmoshpere, perhaps the most important one as the graphics aren't very developed and the dialogue is not extra special. Maybe its just putting all these things together which does it.

That's a comon and sensible thing to say.

But I think the music is the ONLY essential aspect (I know that sounds silly, but regarding the atmosphere of a game, it is true I believe.)

For example, try playing the original Unreal with music off. It looses all it's feelings and evokations of being "alone" on an alien planet. It's still an Ok game, but one without atmosphere.

That I must agree with. Grim Fandango is pants without any music or sound.

I love the music, it's so cool. But it wasn't what created the atmosphere (I think). Except for the freedom it had, I think the best were/are the chars. They are something special.

Yes, and the mystery. You are really solving a puzzle during the game. Although my biggest problem with LBA1 was that I didn't know what "clobber a Clone" meant (I was really young) You are in search of certain things and as one thing leads to another this really keeps the tension into it. I think.

How does...

I think it's the music, the music to LBA2 is one of my fave soundtracks to a computer game beacuse it is so different and nearly New Age/Folk like

Well, yeah, the music really does do a lot... the graphics help a bit, you know, the cartoony idea...

Have you ever played Myst (the first one, not the others) if you have, you'll notice it's kinda spooky, that's because of the music... as said in the making video

The characters, their images, mixed with the environement and the music create this wonderful atmosphere.
I think like Twinsal, the chars own a main role in the atmosphere of the game, and where they live plus the music are added to complete it.

But the characterisation was non-existant!

However, I can relate to your point. The characters are another thing that sticks into your memory.

Hmmm, while I must say that in LBA the characterisation is very weak when compared to a game like Grim Fandango, the favourite characters all have a funny trait or something that is quirky about them, which sticks in our minds immediately and permanently endears them to the audience (us).

LBA, like Zelda, creates its atmosphere though loads of pointless details that enhance and make the world seem more real.
Not everything is connected with the game-play or plot, most is just their to help make the "universe" of the game.
