The EEE 2008 Thread

(if you have come from a time bubble and are looking for 2006- http://forum.magicball.net/showthread.php?t=10914)

E3 is soon apon us, the time when we find out the answer to the eternal gamers question;
Has anyone done anything decent this time?

E3 is smaller this year, but theres some pretty cool stuff already showen;

=========

Nintendo;

http://www.cubed3.com/news/10410

The biggest...breaking...news on Nintendo front is "Wii - Motionplus".

A device that clips on the bottom of the Wiimote to give it, apperently, true 1:1 senseing abilitys.
The Wiimote, for those that are wondering, at the moment can sense any rotation that changes its position in the gravational plan. It can also sense displacement in 3 axis, as well as absolute position and distance when you are pointing at the screen.
So this must somehow fill some of those gaps.
I'm guessing this thing includes a compass that gives the Wiimote a sense of barring without facing the screen, but beyond that I dont know. Sensing the Arm?!
Either way, I suspect a Zelda Sword Fighting game announced soon to go with it.

The sceptic in me questions if this will really make much difference.

The Wii already has far better 1:1 sensing potential then even 1/10th the companys are using. Giving them more data to play with might not give us better games.
WiiBaseball proved at launch what was possible in terms of "controlling a stick", yet even that hasnt been reproduced.

Here's the report on Nintendo's own website.

Quote:
The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play.
Correct guess Darkflame.

Wouldn't it be nicer to just upgrade the default wiimotes?
Now everyone has to buy these addons!

This is upgradeing the Wiimotes.
You mean, like you think Nintendo should take in old wiimotes and swap them for new ones with this internaly by post?
Maybe, but I think that would actualy work out more expensive.

I suspect these will come bundeled with some killer app anyway.
Nintendo would be silly to release this with nothing nobody wants.

I don't mean take in all the ones already bought, but instead of selling the ones they have been selling so far, change the default wiimote so it already has these upgrades on them.

Kudos to Nintendo for starting off E3 with yet another way to nickel and dime their customers...anyone want a Wii? I'm just about ready to dump mine. I have enough paperweights.

Also a new Wii Remote expansion, this time third-party and a bit more questionable.

@Kitarii: But the new Remote still would have the same capacities as the old one. You would have to buy a new one and throw the old away if you don't have a use for it any more.

I think they would do that too.
But they wont force existing owners to rebuy wiimotes, hence this.

Second hand Wii's are still in huge demand.
Amongst people, you know, mad enough to like games like Mario Galaxy, WiiSports, Metroid Corruption, Twilight Princess and Zack and Wiki.

Anyway...

Some annoucments from microsoft;

1. They have a Wii-like avatar system now, made by Rare.
Darkflame says - "meh".

2. They have partnered with Netflic
Darkflame says - "Actualy, a pretty good move. Anything strengthing their digital distribution platform accross mediums helps.Making physical discs look redundant is a good way to counter sony's blu-ray hype".

3. The Xbox360 is getting Final Fantasy XIII
Darkflame says - "Big blow for Sony loseing the exclusivity, but dosnt really do anything for me."

4. Banjo Kazzooie on Xbox Live.
Darkflame says - "The new game looks nice, putting the old game up with "stop and swap" feature is a good movie."

ID Software works with EA on "Rage";

http://pc.ign.com/articles/889/889225p1.html

The first game to use their "Tech5" engine. (which basicaly makes it much much easier for artists to paint the landscape however they like. The demo videos of the engine seem like a god-send for level designers).

The grav sensors in a standard Wiimote are actually pretty crap. I tried using it as an accelerometer in my car and the error rate is far too high. This new motion sensor might open up doors... then again it may just never be used!

They are pretty standard piezoelectric sensors used in all sorts of things.
If theres an "error" its almost certainly elsewhere, or outside the range the sensors are supposed to sense.

I have played with GlovePIE stuff for quite a few purposes, and (angle wise), its spot on 100% every time.
It never sense's a wrong angle at all.

Its not really supposed to sense absolute acceleration values...nor is it good to sense Jerks (), but neither of these are particularly usefull for game values anyway.
The fact the Wiimote, if you drop it, shows very near-zero values in freefall shows the sensors do a decent job at absolute acceleration senseing. But its not really needed in games. If you want to measure your cars acceleration, theres better sensors for that.

Sure, it might be nice to know the exact speed of a pitch in Wiibaseball.
But gameplay wise its far more important to know that one pitch is 10 times faster then another. And this is can handel just fine.
Any increase in "accuracy" of the sensors is going to be swamped out by users hand vibrations anyway. The filtering (or lack of) of this motion is what cause's most "noise" seen in some games.

The best demo of the Wiimotes abilitys, incidently, is this;

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KyvIlKSA0BA
(this also demos nicely what the axis the wiimote cant sense....which this add-on probably does)

I'm quite supprised Nintendo hasnt launched a more advanced sensor bar, actualy, given how cheap that would be.

Microsoft's conference:

Mii's.
Exciting new games like Uno!
METALLICA! \m/ *silence*
Only good thing was FFXIII but overal it was nothing new, the Mii's, the singstar rip off, the eyetoy wannabe, etc.
It's all been done.

This looks pretty cool to me.
Basicaly, a freerunning game set in a clean, yet distopia future.
Very much like a first person Prince of Persia.

Actually, they're more in demand by soccer moms and 11-year-olds, who Nintendo clearly is marketing their console to. I think you just named the only 5 Wii games worth owning if you aren't just a casual gamer interested in the latest party incarnation or someone trying to beat their girlfriend at some ridiculously simple game that makes you feel good but shows that you are both retards.

Looking like another reason to get a 360.
Even with the price-cut, I'll still need a few more though.

As an FF fan who isn't sure about the PS3 vs. 360 debate, this scores fairly big points for MS for me.

BTW, why does Banjo's new title sound like a ripoff of Ratchet and Clank? :P

But I like both Banjo & Ratchet series so a combination would be good anyway.
