Arrow The Ultimate Euro 2004 thread

Welcome!

1. I hope that we can repeat the success of the World Cup thread.

2. This will be the thread that will last for 23 months (at least), meaning all the way to the final 4 july 2004 (in Lisboa? I am not sure, but I know the venues).

3. Venues: (preliminary)
Porto
Braga
Guimares
Aveiro
Coimbra
Leiria
Lisboa
Loule
Probably both Porto and Lisboa will have two stadiums hosting (Boavista's, Porto FC's, Benfica's and Sporting's)

4. But first there is the qualification (the reason that I opened the thread this early^^), cause it starts in ~2 weeks.
For the first time (thanks UEFA) in modern age we will have a standardized group construction with 5 teams in every group (earlier we have had 5 or 6, and even 7 in the same group (1994 WC qual.) Well, well, here are the 10 groups:

Group 1:
Cyprus 0
France 0 0
Israel 0 0
Malta 0 0
Slovenia 0 0

Group 2:
Denmark 0 0
Luxembourg 0 0
Norway 0 0
Romania 0 0
Bosnia-Herzegovina 0 0

Group 3:
Austria 0 0
Netherlands 0 0
Belarus 0 0
Moldova 0 0
Czech Republic 0 0

Group 4:
Hungary 0 0
Poland 0 0
Sweden 0 0
San Marino 0 0
Latvia 0 0

Group 5:
Germany 0 0
Iceland 0 0
Scotland 0 0
Faroe Islands 0 0
Lithuania 0 0

Group 6:
Greece 0 0
Northern Ireland 0 0
Spain 0 0
Ukraine 0 0
Armenia 0 0

Group 7:
England 0 0
Liechtenstein 0 0
Turkey 0 0
Slovakia 0 0
FYR Macedonia 0 0

Group 8:
Belgium 0 0
Bulgaria 0 0
Croatia 0 0
Estonia 0 0
Andorra 0 0

Group 9:
Finland 0 0
Italy 0 0
Wales 0 0
Yugoslavia 0 0
Azerbaijan 0 0

Group 10:
Albania 0 0
Republic of Ireland 0 0
Switzerland 0 0
Georgia 0 0
Russia 0 0

Note that the zeroes are there since I lamely just ripped the groups off UEFA.com. The winning team from every group goes straight to the main tournament, while the runners-ups battle eachother in classic home/away direct qualification with the winners taking the 5 left spots. Portugal is, as host, directly qualified and does not need to play any qualification games.

5. I hope to have tipping competitions, just as in the WC thread, the first one are coming soon.

6. Good luck.

7. Discussion free. Discuss the qualification groups.

8. Adieu.

About tomorrow.
A badly wounded Swedish team will face Latvia in Riga. Larsson has quit. Ljungberg, Mjällby and Patrik Andersson are all injured. Andreas Andersson as well. Lucic also. etc.
Latvia is on march forward. Therefor my tip is: 0-0

Norway wins and restores some of its former glory (?) against neighbors Denmark.

Russia was really good against Sweden in a friendly, and the new generation is on march. Ireland is hard to beat though.

World Cup successes like Turkey's is often giving hangovers...

The safest bet is that Germany and Netherlands wins.

This is Sweden calling.

In a negative way.

Cause I was right:

Quote:

Latvia is on march forward. Therefor my tip is: 0-0
19 qualification games now under the reign of Tommy Söderberg and Lars Lagerbäck. 15 wins. 4 Draws. Against England, Turkey, Slovakia and... Latvia!!!

lol

I listened to the game at radio, and it sounded like Latvia was even closer to victory. For example they had a head in the crossbar in the second half... But hey, we missed lots of World Cup players: Patrik Andersson, Fredrik Ljungberg, Johan Mjällby, Teddy Lucic, Andreas Andersson, Anders Svensson. All injured/sick. And then also Henrik Larsson who has quit the national team.

Furthermore across Europe:
Faroe Islands drew Scotland after leading 2-0... 2-2.
Norway equalized twice against Denmark... 2-2
Cyprus was leading against France but Cisse and Wiltord scored... 1-2

Coming back later!

Btw.
It is ironic that I have tipped the right result in 3 of Sweden's last 5 competitional international games...
Quote:
THE BIG GAME:
Sweden-England
Tip: 1-1
Quote:
Sweden-Senegal:
Extra time.
Senegal wins there
(not score but anyway) ^^

Quote:
Latvia is on march forward. Therefor my tip is: 0-0

Sorry I didn't take part. I forgot. I'll take part in round 2, I promise.

Well wow! Wales won! I told Gustav on IRC that Wales had a decent team, but I didn't think they'd beat Finland, who also have a rapidly improving team. What a great result for them. Look out for them.

And Scotland are shite. 2-2 with Faroe Islands! Hahahaha!
