Everyone else - the Nintendo chart was simply showing how Nintendo's "games first" attitude is no longer as popular as the author believes it should be. With any luck SOny and Microsoft will destroy each other (can but hope) in their bitching. Seriously tho, I think games fans need nemeses. Before Sony, Nintendo had Sega. Commadore had Atari. Amiga had Atari ST. PC has Mac and so on
Yes..but Nintendo VS Sega was, imo, a "fair fight".
Both companys trying to produce better games to beat eachover...better crazy inventions...new ideas.
Sony and Microsoft are just kinda faceless multi-media pushing comepanys.
Heck, Sony has even said the PS3 isnt even a games machine

The fight is no longer about games...and that makes me very sad.
If Sega was still in the market, I am sure gameing would be in a much better place today.

True - but that's why I think MS and Sony have done themselves out of the market. Now Sony claims that PS3 is not a games machine it will begin to alientate some of the purchasing audience. Ie a parent looking for a games machine for a b-day prezzie for a 10 year old will think games console and not DVD player, media editor hybrid thing...I think this will be a key moment for Sony. Microsoft have already seen their mistake and started backtracking!

Well, Microsoft is pushing its XBox Live service....which, while I dont think is particularly good value, I do see it in a highly relivent content to gameing.
Far more so then what Sony is boasting about the PS3.

Also, the Xbox360 has got quite a few new ideas.....and rather then mearly copying Nintendos wavebird success, they have seen a good way to improve it. (rechargeable battary packs, and you can recharge while playing).

I think sony have had the lead so long they have got lazy, and have started takeing everything for grantage.

Does anybody have pictures of when Sony first showed pictures of PS2 and such. I think it was you DF, who said they did something like this years E3, with showing prerenderings of things not possible on their coming system.

Doubtful. The "Playstation" brand name is more prevalent in everyday culture than "Nintendo," I would venture, and most parents will probably look for the most popular item, not the "one that is the best games machine."

Sony's marketing has been, and will be, the best of the big 3. Bar none.

They may be possible....but we just dont know.

They used pre-rendered FMV and presented as it was in game footage.

They should have said, very clearly, "THIS IS WHAT WE WOULD LIKE OUR GAMES TO LOOK LIKE".

Numberious games they did this too, not least Killzone2.

Theres even some very badly done photoshop concepts of a new GT game

If your talking about Revolution download games being free, I am skeptical.
A few sites have said it, but none seem to be confirmed.

My hunch is some will be free, but most will cost something.
Nintendo do need to sort out a good micro-payment system.

Why I am skeptical:
a)Famitsu dosnt lie, but translations could be wrong.
b) Duck Hunt ? Gum Shoe ? Cabbage ? Perfect Dark ?Pokemon Stadium? .... all games seem VERY unlikely to me.(due to hardware, or liesence issues)

heh heh heh. The site Boomtown, had news that the games would be free for download. They had two different sources, depending on which language you viewed the site in. I checked it out. One site had the other for a source, so I thought it was ok.
btw: It was an Interview Gamespot had had with George Harrison of NOA.
Then some people at Gaming World got mad at me because, appereantly I hadn't checked it out right. There was some other stuff to it, but appereantly Gamespot had been quoted wrong or something, and it turned out, there still hadn't been set a price. JEEZUS

Bah, you could emulate those games for free. I know some people sell old NES scopes and whatnot that they've adapted to USB/Parallel Port. If you really needed to play the old ones, I'd emulate.

I mean, I love my old NES, but it might take 10 tries for the game to actually work (without blowing in the cartridge and whatnot), and then, most of the time, I can't save. So dammit, fire up that PC, bitch!

I dought the revolution would support any sort of backwards-compatible for lightgun games...thus I think that list is false.
Someone just looked up every Nintendo game, and added a few second partys out of wishfull thinking. (Perfect Dark).

And as has been said before: Emulateing is all well and good if you cant get hold of a game legaly.
If you can, then its theft. (age of game is no excuse...films over 10 years old arnt treated with the same disrespect)
Nintendo is giving gamers the chance to play their old games legaly.

Besides, those 64DD games never came out....and many more where never finnished development

Stop with the consoles all ready!:P They're just overgrown toasters. They have no upgrade posibilities, geeez :P And what about the AGEIA Physics Processing Unit eeh? Just for the PC, it's going to wipe out every console on the market when it comes to graphics. For me it's like having an automatic transmition (the console) and the manual (PC) sure, it drives smother, and you need less knowlesge to operate it, but it will never be as fast or as flexible as the good old manual (unless you have the mixed F1 auto-manual transmition for a load of money). I know this is not a "Why a PC is superior to console" thread :P:P:P but from my past expieriences I know, that the situation with the new consoles is going to be exactly like with the old ones - they go out into the market with a bang, and then the PC slowely takes it's rightfull place, becouse the console is not evolving like the PC does. And than the console - companies make a new console, and it goes like this from the times of the first consoles.

Of course the point here Jasiek is as follows:

XBox is the only console in competition with PC - and Microsoft doesn't care about the outcome of that cos it has fingers in both pies.

PS3 is set to become some weirrd media centre

Revolution wants to change the way we play and think of games therefore it is not trying to compete with PC at all (or others for that matter)

DF- good points - but I will keep on dreaming

Double J - I'd rather own a legal copy any day - even if I had to pay a few quid for it. I'll admit that I'd never want to own the entire back catalogue if they cost money - but if the less well known games are free I'd do it for the hell

Jasiek ~ So, you got a 3x3ghz CPU in your pc then?

The PPU is a wonderfull invention, long overdue. (along with a VPU)
But it dosnt mean means can magicaly "beat" consoles.
If Nintendo and Sony are wise they will stick the chip in their systems.
But a PPU is exactly that...for physics only.
But microsofts new console out this year will be quite a bit more powerfull *in general* then any pc your likely to buy for the next few years. (not to mention many, many factors cheaper)

Consoles are many times more efficiant then PCs...as a coder, its far easier to code for one fixed set of hardware, and to bugtest one fixed set of hardware. This leaves more time for the actualy game.

Consoles evolve in bursts every 5 year.
PC's ungrade slowly continiously.
Both has advantages/dissadvantages, of course.

If you can afford a quad chip, silicone graphics workstation quality machine next year...then, sure, you can own a more powerfull PC. But for most people, thats not going to happen till many years after the next consoles are out.

The only way PCs can become popular again as a games platform is too look for other *unique* hardware they can have in them.
"power" just isnt going to cut it any more.

Quote:
Weren't they in Japan?
No
Well, some did, but not all.
Some like "cabbage" never got finnished at all.

PS3 Not A Toy, HDD Linux Ready
Sony president Ken Kutaragi has stated in an interview with Impress PC Watch that the PlayStation 3 will not be considered a gaming machine, and in fact the optional HDD will come preinstalled with Linux. The following is a direct quote in which Mr. Kutaragi examines the difference between a "gaming machine" and a "computer entertainment system".

"I believe its wrong that, while we've been calling PlayStations "computers," Nintendo, which is in our same business, keeps telling the world their consoles are "toys." So even though we're making something that has the capability to be recognized as a supercomputer and requires paperwork when exporting or importing, the government sees it as a "toy." The PlayStation 2 has something as great as the Emotion Engine, and it can even run Linux, but it's still considered a gaming machine. I thought that the situation would become better since Microsoft appeared [in the gaming industry] from the IT field. But they won't say it either, since they want to protect their business. They see problems if the Xbox could run Windows, so they keep calling the Xbox a "game machine." It is really a pain in the neck. This time, we're positioning the PS3 as a "supercomputer." But people won't recognize it as a computer unless we call it a computer, so we're going to run an OS on it. In fact, the Cell can run multiple OSes. In order to run the OSes, we need an HDD. So in order to declare that the PS3 is a computer, I think we'll have [the HDD] preinstalled with Linux as a bonus.

Day by day the man makes himself more and more reviled!!!

Sorry sony.
YOUR the one telling us gameing is for little kids, and then trying to justfy your machine as "adult" by trying to get it to have PC functions.

If gameing is going to ever be respected as the artform it deserves to be, it does not need to be an "also ran" in a movie/multi-media system.
It especialy dosnt need the market leader dissmissing it all the time.

For goodness sake, give some freaking respect to the media that is giving you so much money!
Arg.
