Japanese

A lot of people here seem to be studying Japanese. How do you learn the language, what course do you follow, which book do you use? How much can you say, can you read or write? How many kanji do you know, etc.?

I use Colloquial Japanese by H.D.B. Clarke and Motoko Hamamoto, and I get lessons from two Japanese students from the international department of our school. I'm not that far yet, only in chapter four. I know all hiragana, not all katakana yet, and about 40 kanji.

Ima, nihongo o naratte imasu.

Darek > the certain teacher who claimed to have built a computer from sticks and stones ?

I myself find handy snippets of Japanese at the back of each monthly issue of NGC. Many interesting sayings there.

Well I learned what I know from anime and video games.

I only know about 20 words, and a few sentences.

Like:

Konichiwa, watashi wa guerin sama, hajimemashte.

or

Ja mada. <-- Pretty short huh? it means "you're not welcome here" or "you're a bother"

A friend of mine made a hiragana/kanataka program to test your skills and learn them with that. Later on it appeared someone else made something that looked really familair, in 1997 or something, for Linux OSes. If you have Java (sun), you can click here to download and open the Java version of it in Windows. It's a great way to learn those characters.

I didn't bother with it, though (yet.)

I'm in the first-year japanese course at school. I know all hiragana and some katakana. We haven't gotten to kanji yet. My textbook is "speak japanese: a textbook for young students Book 1" I'm very much a beginner, but i can say basic verbs, phrases, likes/dislikes, stuff like that.

Watashi wa Alexia desu. Juugo sai desu. Tatsu doshidesu. Chokoreito ga sukidesu. Jouba to suiei ga dekimasu. Sumo ga dekimasen. Guinness o nomimasu

(I am Alexia, i'm 15. My zodiac is the dragon. I like chocolate. I can ride horses and swim, i cannot sumo wrestle I drink guinness)

See, pretty basic, primer style sentences. Hey, its just first year.

oh yeah, "Japanese for busy people" seems to be a very good book to learn some Japanese. I heard good things about it, and received a lot of recommendations.

Old, but perhaps some people didn't read it yet:

Really enjoyable
