(warning, 3 streaming quicktimes...)

We can actualy build that stuff O_o
I was impressed enough enough with the lastest version of Asimo, but this is darn cool.

Anyone else got any featuristic tech videos/links?
Things that make you go "wow".

Now I'm gonna have nightmares about giant grasshoppers.

But yes, I'm impressed with these robots. Lol, and they're made by the John Deere tractor company.

Yes, they havnt got videos of them "eating" a tree, but thats even more impressive.
The thing at the end can grab it, rotate and shred it in one seamless move.

Jasiek ~ Chears, nice site!

Probably the most famous, but still pretty good:
http://world.honda.com/HDTV/ASIMO/
(Videos of ASIMO new version, includeing a "run")

Incidently, I do worry about the fact they have made him run before hard-codeing the 3 laws into the positronic brain.....

And hows this:

http://www.compfused.com/directlink/662

Augmented Reality technology comeing along well.
I have always believed this to be the future of not just all computer games, but just about every other technology too.
A virtual world overlaid onto a physic one could replace almost 50% of, well, everything single thing we use....

Think about it. The implications for having a partical worldwide AR system are so mind-boggling.
And this is fully do-able in our lifetime.

umm...unless those are genticaly enginered horses that eat plastic and breath greanhouse gas's Im not impressed

And please dont miss out on seeing the AR stuff above, its amazing.
I got another demo video somewhere showing how you can work out positional data in real time.
We really are 80% of the way there with technology....we just need it small, light and portable....then mass produce it for the whole planet.

Watching the Asimo is very scary - cos you think it's a cheesy Sci-Fi extra or something and then you remember it's actually a robot...Wow now that sends a shiver down my spine.

As for total immersion (they do know it abbreviates to TIT right?) it is very cool but I cant see any real benefit - I guess (no sound on my work PC) that you could only interact by looking at a screen. The real revolution must be in creating 3d real world representations that interact with your brain - come on porn industry here's one for you to push

Then let me open your mind.

1 pair of AR glass's can replace all these items

TVs,
Computer Moniters,
Radios,
Phones,
Callenders,
Clocks,
Posters,
Maps,
Nightvision,
Personal notebooks/reminders,

I could go on forever!
The potential for this technology is simply amazing.

Hows this for a simple one:
Youd never get lost, AR could make a giant arrow hover above where you want to go, or you could signal a friend by having a giant beam of light flash into the sky.
Heck, you could write on the sky.

(the whole thing could work like IRC channels, to stop things getting cluttered)

AR combines the real with the virtual, it gives us another layer ontop of our own world.
Anything that dosnt have to physicaly be touched could be replaced!
The consquencs of AR would be.....well, I dont think my brain or knowledge could comprehend the effect it would have.
But it would be big.

We have the technology;

Motion tracking (http://www.robots.ox.ac.uk/~ajd/Movies/kitchen.mp4.avi ~ Big, but it shows you how it works excelently )

VR glass's (projection based probably the best),
Powerfull mobil computers,
Loads of wireless comms methods,
GPS,

Combine those existing technologys into a cheap, portable, comfortable unit and you probably have the most amazing device ever created.

GPS is about the only thing that needs to get better (accuracy isnt good enough), but its happening right now. The europe replacement for GPS is ten times more accurate..which is enough.

Things come in stages.
Give me a gyroscopic controller with a screen and its a good start for AR.

Dont be too optimistic, true AR would need to be cheap, light and afforable.
For that to work, it needs to come in stages, with each stage being a cool product that helps pay for the next stage.

I have high hopes Nintendo will take us at least a small step of the way there.
(And lets not even speculate on AR Pokemon battles.....)

Just kidding.

I suppose the Gyroscopic controller is easily the one thing everyone can agree on, that the N5 will have, since Nintendo has invested so much in that technology and havn't created anything that uses it except Kirbt's tilt'n'tumble, a game I would truly like to try.
Actually, seeing as Nintendo has reserved the rights for "SOME" kind of new way of looking at your screen, I suppose AR is to much out of the question actually.

Actualy, tilt'n'tumble uses a primative tilt sensor...no more advance then a tiny marble and some contacts
Gyros have 3 axis and amazing sensitivity by comarpsion.

No it isnt out of the way at all...I just think it will happen slowly.

BTW, Nintendo DS £55!!!
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9h-70-ckm.html

Now thats high tech at an amazing price.
(clearing for the new coloured models I guese...but who cares about paintwork?)

i didnt go wow when looking at it, i mean, its a LAME and SLOW machine that seems pretty useless for anything else than "woodchewing", and even then, a strong guy with an axe is more efficient?

if im wrong please correct me o_O

I

I see the potential in these items but I have 2 major reservations for its usefulness.

1) It is largely limited by the room you are in, you could create a realistic game world in your living room but you still dont pysically run around in it.

2) There is still no sensation - no real sense of touch smell etc.

TIT is a great idea but I feel it can only be a step on the way and not the ultimnate goal of the games industry.

Who needs a room? ^_^
It dosnt need exteria sensors, it can work with GPS, or as my other link shows, fully by camera-data positioning.

Half the point of AR is to leave a room with it.
Walking down a street with AR has the potential for so much usefull stuff.
Want directions? Follow the arrows in the sky.
What details on a local building? pull them up out of thin air.
The non-gameing apps are big.

As for gameing, I see it being blended with the real world more.
Purhapes dedicated gameing buildings, or fields.
Gamers will get exercise
But other games would be simpler to do.
Pokemon battles could be done almost anywhere, for instance.
Or LightSaber battles. (ok, youd need a pen-like device with gyros, but thats no biggy)
^_^
Or maybe shotting eachover with the lazer guns or whatever.

You are right we could never touch/feel items. (yet)
But not everything needs that.

Really, the potential for AR extends to replace ANYTHING we dont need to physicaly touch.

Materilism could end in the most unexpected way possible.
Would people stop careing about visual apperences when its all just a vial ontop of this reality? Why buy expensive cloaths when you can program your own avatar to look like anything.
People would just go for comfort I think.

Its an interesting question really just how much would change.

Games are cool with AR, but its infintely more important to soceity imo.

But, bizare as it sounds, it would end materilism.
Who would care about how stuff looked any more when we could change it at a touch of a button?
I think people would stop careing about shallow things when we see how easily they can be swapped and changed.

As for enviromental impact...I see huge benifits.
Because this device would replace so many industarys, we should have more space avaible for other stuff, like parks and such.

In fact, the gameing culture might premote more parks and wildlife!
If your going to play major AR games, you need a field dont you?
Running around a forrest virtualy shotting eachover...or pretending to light-saber speeders as they zoom past....or sneaking about MGS3 style.

Gamers would start getting excercise

... and then, one day, we will be so much into that, that we will live in pods and connect ourselves to that wonderful reality where you dont need space, so why care to move your real body? then new generations would get so involved into it that themselves dont know that they are in an illusion world.. *matrix movie starts*
